Apollo 10 Space Noise

So, any thoughts on what the Apollo 10 astronauts heard on the far side of the moon?

I've heard lots of strange things on radios that were explainable phenomenon, but I do wonder.

Re: Apollo 10 Space Noise

My guess would be some sort of harmonic of interference generated by the solar wind blowing by.  There's no magnetic field there to stop it.  There would be no signals from Earth to mask the effect while on the backside of the moon.

Radio technology was just barely capable of communication Earth-to-Moon in those days.  I've heard weird crap myself right here on Earth on both Ham and CB radios,  and some short wave bands.  That was a few decades ago.

Sounds about right for what it could have been GW as I have played a bit with both but got bored with it due to the sound quality that was back then.....during the 60's and 70's....

Re: Apollo 10 Space Noise

Hi Spacenut:

On CB,  I was long ago known as "Rubber Duck".  My wife was "Mama Goose".  Our then-infant son was "Little Daffy".  It was fun in spite of the really bad sound quality.  Never mind that the VW beetle in which the CB was mounted could not actually exceed the speed limit.

"And I'm about to put the hammer down." 'Cause we got a little ol' convoy

Re: Apollo 10 Space Noise

I had almost forgotten that song.  I believe they made a movie out of it,  too.

Re: Apollo 10 Space Noise

We did have transcripts:
https://www.ajournalofmusicalthings.com … -the-moon/
    Cernan: Whooooooooooo.
Young: Did you hear that whistling sound, too?
Cernan: Yeah. Sounds like – you know, outer-space-type music.
Young: I wonder what it is.

They mention how the insulation on the window is burnt off

Some time ranges where the possible "space music" could be faintly heard:
https://archive.org/details/apollo-10-s … ic-cleaned
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
4:01 - 4:20   ending right before one of them makes the "whoooooo" sound, possibly to imitate the "space music".
6:58 - 7:33   very faint multi tone version
8:47 - 9:19   including the part when one says "that sure is veird music"
9:41 - 10:09  strongest/clearest capture, ending with one saying "that's weird", followed by "aint it weird?" by the other.

perhaps a type of static or harmonics,  two different RF signals—close in frequency but separated enough to interfere on a complex basis— the frequency sometimes join and mix to produce a warbling, varied tone that is sometimes audible, stray interference at times or almost like a power chord in electronic fx or producing a different harmonic and sometimes not.

the videos go into explanation theories such as charged particles

in recent news we have a Heavy Lift booster and it all worked perfectly until it began to overturn after the stage separation.

A surprise at staging

Re: Apollo 10 Space Noise

For Mars_B4_Moon re #7

Thank you for finding and posting the Apollo 10 flight transcript .. I had not seen that before.  The problem at staging appears to have been due to failure of one of the gyros.  That particular gyro had failed during manufacture, and was rebuilt twice before it was accepted for flight.  The cause of failure was reported to have likely been a tiny particle that interfered with rotation of the device.
