Architecture Mega-Structures for Mars

This is think about a time period beyond 2090 a Mega Structure building which also fuctions as a Train Station could take more than a human lifetime to build.

maybe it could be an underground system, perhaps rooms in connection to other rooms and some its size 'Hindenburg' compared, the Channel Tunnel between England and France possesses the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world, the largest Aircraft the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380 could such structures be made on Mars? Would it be a honey-comb network of smaller dome shapes supported by Flying buttresses joining up into one larger structure?

Could you turn the train station into a site that repairs bikes, fixes and makes clothing or suits and also provide food and tourist accommodation? The Mars train station and site for buidling cars might be where you live inside a type of Amphitheater Space Structure, Robots might first manufacture a 3D truss building, this would be expanded with another rigid, lightweight, truss-like structure constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern, some parts of the building could have a barrel vault structure, the first central parts might be or 'Large' a structure like Avicii Arena the Stockholm Globe Arena or like Eden Project in Cornwall, England or the Football Arena das Dunas Brazil, every time a built section would seem complete it would instead expand into a larger structure, trains and cars would be able to travel into the structure. This could go in one of those McMurdo, Smaller Settlement design threads or Martain City threads but I think a new Train Station / Hotel / Stadium Manufacture topic is more suitable.

A Mars building  that functioned as a transport hub would have to display the right visual Aesthetic to attract space-tourists, a utopia feel from the outside that invites and not just a functional factory or storage site for bunks for colonists. The build or Biosphere or Train Station or Bidome would be a system created by Robotic Machines but of easily assembled components. There might be a Nuclear Reactor nearby to provide power, the building could have water infrastructure, and plant and biological park life  initiatives. These Large Scale buildings be built by Robots before humans arrive. The Mars structures will also be a place to store Cars, they will Robots repaired, host helicopter flights, there be a small farm, a pond, hotel for space tourists, there will be sporting events and there will be a train station network. The Mars train station or stadium might be one of the early colonization towns but also have its own Tourism, Race Car or NFL, Soccer, PingPong, Football thing to provide entertainment.  The Mars Hotel / Train Station or stadium could be build in parts, a robotic prefabricated system, allowing the stadium to be 3-d printed in parts but also built in stages, the Mars structure might have a series of aqua-farms, a farm for mammals, a place for some type of indoor football, a stake rink, a water park, a research science outpost or college university and a repair and manufacture center for Cars and Robots. The early Mars Mega Structures of Mars might be a multi-purpose building.

The Mega structure might also build down into a Subway or Underground system, it might have one of the largest floor area but part of the building could repair robotic-farms, it might fix computers and bikes and space suits, it could manufacture home made Mars rockets like NASA Vehicle Assembly Building. the tall structures that go beyond a certain height might be forbidden due to Mars Helicopters, landing Rockets and other air traffic, the structure may build more outward than upwards. The Mega Structure might have a form of radiation shielding or warmth and lighting, it might be translucent "skin" leaving structure visible from the inside or it could have hologram projections of greens and blues to remind Martians of the homeworld Earth, during a period of high Solar Activity the Mega Structure might activate a retractable roof like you see in Earth sports venues. Germany once had a super building that constructed huge Airships these buildings are now indoor tourist parks, the Tropical Islands Resort, Jean-Luc Lagardère Plant that makes the Airbus is another example of a big structure. There is also Grand Central Terminal / Station in New York, the Communist Soviet era Palace of Parliament Romania, the Finland Inex Sipoo food distribution site, the London Millennium Dome also known as The O2 leisure concert and sporting arena, Giga-factory Texas where Tesla Cars are made are another example of a big structure, parts of the building might offer rooms to companies on Earth like Shinsegae Centum City shopping building, it could be Mars Bus depot, also for work, building manufacture but drinking eating, taxi and like the Department store building in South Korea, part of the Train Station might also function as an Art site a Museum for reading and interacting with AI to learn about Mars history.

NewYork again

All Aboard for the History of the Grand Central Terminal, an Iconic NYC Landmark
https://mymodernmet.com/grand-central-terminal/

With 44 platforms and 67 tracks (and counting), the train station serves the New York City Subway and the Metro-North routes to Connecticut and the Hudson Valley. The giant, constantly updating train schedules and the starry ceiling of the main concourse suggest a world frozen in Beaux-Arts style. The construction of the terminal ushered in the architectural innovations of the 20th century which remade Manhattan into its modern image.

Take a look into the past, present, and future of the world-famous train depot

At the turn of the 20th century, rail travel represented the peak of a modern, connected society. However, it also meant pollution—and lots of it. At the time, city laws prohibited steam engines south of 42nd street since the hub of the vibrant metropolis was downtown. Coincidentally, New Yorkers were keen to solidify their city as a cultural and economic capital with a majestic landmark. The complimentary occurrences meant one thing: New York City deserved a grand train depot, and 42nd street would be an ideal location for the structure. “People who come to New York should enter a palace on the end of their ride, and not a shed,” read the June 5, 1869, edition of the Real Estate Record and Guide.

The Space Frame in Action: SoFi Stadium
https://www.metalarchitecture.com/artic … i-stadium/

Space frames are often the only solution for complex architectural designs. The SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., the first indoor-outdoor stadium to be constructed, was designed by HKS Architects Inc., Los Angeles, with a sweeping shape and open features that only a space frame could provide. The space frame was designed and engineered by DSI Spaceframes in collaboration with Crown Corr and manufactured by DSI, the nation’s leader in such systems and the only space frame manufacturer in the U.S. using all American-made steel components.

“Designing the space frame structure to support the outer perforated panel skin of this stadium was anything but a simple project,” says Josh Chambers, DSI president. “Each surface panel was unique in shape and pattern, playing its own strategic part in the structure’s final appearance.”

The London system was inspired by the Chicago Tunnel Company, also built to distribute mail throughout the city.
https://en.protothema.gr/abandoned-post … time-ever/
It’s origins date back to 1855, when Rowland Hill – then Secretary to the Post Office submitted a report to the Postmaster General for a system based on moving mail in underground tubes – with air pressure being used as the propelling force.
After 70 years of trials and submissions of plans to build the network, boring machines were eventually plunged below ground to hollow-out 6.5 miles of track.
The driverless trains ran in a single tunnel, 9ft in diameter. At the station approaches, the main tunnel divides into two 7ft tunnels, each with a single track.

Re: Architecture Mega-Structures for Mars

Any buildings on Mars that are pressurized will need to be pressure vessels of modest capability in addition to carrying the vertical gravity and live loads traditionally associated with architectural designs.  That means flat walls are right out,  if they must ever carry a pressurization load on one side,  and not on the other.  You are looking at spheres and cylinders,  or joined segments thereof,  or else solid unfractured rocks to support your pressure-retaining layers.

I rather doubt that the large pressure dome vessels underneath which conventional buildings may be built will ever be feasible for 2 reasons:  (1) The stress on the dome is large,  and increases with size,  to the point that no known material would be suitable,  even if it could be manufactured on Mars.  (2) The pressure underneath the dome acts to lift it up off its foundations,  letting out the air underneath;  if heavy enough to counter that,  you'll never hold it up during construction before it is pressurized,  unless it is made of some fictional unobtainium or manurium material.

Lava tubes are natural conduits through which lava travels beneath the surface of a lava flow. Tubes form by the crusting over of lava channels and pahoehoe flows.
https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/glossary/lava_tube.html
A broad lava-flow field often consists of a main lava tube and a series of smaller tubes that supply lava to the front of one or more separate flows. When the supply of lava stops at the end of an eruption or lava is diverted elsewhere, lava in the tube system drains downslope and leaves partially empty conduits beneath the ground. Such drained tubes commonly exhibit "high-lava" marks on their walls, generally flat floors, and many lava stalactites that hang from the roof. Lava can also erode downward, deepening the tube and leaving empty space above the flowing lava.
