As a member of the german Mars Society, I would like to inform Mars Enthusiasts about an ongoing project here:
The journey to Mars starts on Earth.
From July 17 until 31, 2004, a simulated 'habitat' lands in Berlin, Germany, at the 'east beach' - directly beneath the wall that once was the border between the western and eastern blocks.
The Berlin station is different from other analog stations in that it shifts the focus away from the scientific field over to the cultural and social conditions for a real mission. Instead of collecting rocks we explore a future culture that will drive human beings to go to Mars. The 'Mars rocks' project conducts research on this culture, in the fields of music, art, engineering and debate.
There is specially composed music and DJ-sets of electronic music, a live chainsaw sculpture, an on-site and online conference, a robotics contest, space food and more.
The current program can be found on the web (in german) at:
http://mars-rocks.org]http://mars-rocks.org
Organizer of the project is a group of culture activists that will continue to promote the manned Mars mission under the label 'Mars rocks'.

Based on this report:

A proposed new federal policy would require the military to select only one of the two existing major launch vehicle providers to continue supporting by the end of the decade, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. According to the article a draft space transportation policy drafted by the Bush Administration would require the Pentagon to select either Boeing's Delta 4 or Lockheed Martin's Atlas 5 as its sole EELV provider by 2009. The downselect is being proposed because of the expense of supporting both launch vehicle programs given the current weak demand for commercial launches. The military has insisted that its "assured access to space" policy requires both vehicle lines be kept active, so that the military can continue launching critical payloads should a problem shut down one vehicle program for an extended period. The plan would also require NASA to use EELVs for its future space exploration programs, rather than develop its own successor to the space shuttle.
We may need an ESA variant of MarsDirect if all US heavy lift capability is scrapped for EELVs.

Huh? where did my reply go?
OK, again:
Great initiative, Bernd!
Couldn't you make the homepage bilingual? So that international visitors get an idea what's it all about, I understand German, but i'd bet a lot of people don't.
Keep us updated, so that this topic gets attention, and a lot of people will be present the 29th!
(edit: wow! that's *really* next to the Berlin wall, great pictures.
