The ones that do animation are of interest.
The ones that do animation with the ** Physics ** engine are of ** particular ** interest.

The hypothesis I am pursuing in the current series is that instanteous matching of momentum on both sides of the rotating vessel is required to maintain stability.

If there is an animation of an American football that obeys the laws of physics (via the Blender Physics Engine), then it should be possible to introduce an instance of a person walking around on the inside of the structure, to see how that disturbance affects the rotating model.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

The animation at the YouTube link below is of a spinning (US style) football.

It is particularly interesting (to me for sure) because the rate of rotation ** seems ** close to the 3 RPM of Large Ship.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrFYrTybRVo

I'll try to time the rotation at some point.

Update later ... the speed of the computer where the video is played may have some influence on the rotation rate.

I got about 5 RPM by timing a quarter turn multiple times... on the system used for the test, rotation of 1/4 came out as about 3 seconds.

Thus, the rotation is faster than would be the Large Ship in flight.

Edit: It is entirely possible that someone searching the Internet for Blender may be directed to this post in NewMars.
If that happens, please check the Recruiting topic, if there is any chance you might be interested in helping with any of the ongoing projects.
****
In the Large Ship Momentum topic, a need has been identified for study of the effect of shift of mass inside a 5000 ton space vessel rotating at 3 RPM.

I asked Google for help finding Blender source code that might help NewMars members to understand the problem (a) and (b) to understand the scope of the problem.  It is clear that ** any ** shift of mass inside the envelope of Large Ship (taken as bounded by the habitat ring and extending to any protrusions in the longitudinal aqxis) will cause a wobble of the rotating vessel.  Left unaddressed, such a wobble may quickly find sympathetic and reinforcing mass movements that will lead to destruction of the vessel while it is in flight.

Blender is a free package that has the sophistication needed to explore this problem.  It does require a reasonably up-to-date video card, and some processing capability.  It runs on Windows, Linux and Apple.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

As an update to this topic, I have just installed Blender 3.6.2 on an Ubuntu work station (22.04) and added an icon to the desk top for quick launch.  As some of the readers of the forum may know, the current edition of Gnome does not provide an automatic facility to add a launcher for a non-standard program. The "secret" is to create a file (Blender.desktop) which is fitted with text that can be discovered on the Internet by asking for Ubuntu Desktop Launcher.  That file must then be given the "x" permission so it can execute, and there is a final step... When you launch the icon for the first time, the operating system will confirm you want to be able to execute the program.  Blender 3.6.2 looks stunning, and I thought the earlier versions looked good!

I am ready to help with Large Ship, if the project ever gets restarted.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

This update is entered on September 12th.  The icon on the desktop worked as described in post #6.  What was different about this session was that I set up ChatGPT(4) on the right monitor, while Blender 3.6.2 was running on the left (high performance) monitor. My experience was with Blender 2.70 through 2.79, and then a little bit with later versions.  3.6.2 is a major advance, and there are some significant differences.  Fortunately, ChatGPT was able to puzzle out the differences, even though it's training data ends in late 2021.  The key difference is that the F6 key is now F9.  F6 used to be used after Shift-A to create an object. The quirk with that was you only had ** one ** chance to touch the F6 key. I like F9 much better, because it is repeatable.  Apparently the F9 key is associated with the "Update Last Action" function.  In this case, I created an object with shift-A, and they used F9 to set the size and smoothness parameters.  From there, ChatGPT and I "looked" at the object, spun it around and shrank it to fit on the viewing screen.  All in all, i am ** very ** impressed by ChatGPT's knowledge of Blender, and particularly pleased by it's ability to organize work flow.  If anyone is interested in the details, I saved the transcript and would be happy to make it available on Dropbox.

If anyone is interested in trying Blender, I'd be happy to provide tips to get started, but the best tips I would offer are:

1) Pick up a copy of Blender for Dummies which is now in it's fourth edition (I have the second edition)
2) Get an account with ChatGPT ... it has proven itself to be a worthy companion for a Blender project.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

Here is the result of a study of Large Ship, based upon the ideas offered by GW Johnson regarding the optimum design for bulkheads for living quarters on Large Ship

9tldxwi.png

The design is 80 meters from floor to floor, and the torus is 20 meters across.

The design is available for anyone to download upon request.

The current Blender version is 3.6.2.

There are quite a few subtle differences, but ChatGPT was able to puzzle out where everything is, or how to work around a feature if it is gone.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

The image shown in Post #7 was offered to the video create feature of Blender 3.6.2.  Each of 600 frames takes several seconds. The render is now showing as complete.  The output folder contains a 505 kb file called 001-599.mkv. The file plays as a movie, but there is nothing showing up.  Well. the movie is supposed to be 20 seconds long, and that is the case.  There would appear to be a bit more work to do.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

The movie taken in Post #9 showed nothing because the camera was inside the model.  It took a while to bring the camera outside and then to point it in the correct direction. After that it took a while to enlarge the field of view, because there are two settings that have to match for the camera to work when moved out of close-up mode. These are camera elevation (Z) and Clip End. I had to set both to 300 meters, and now the render seems to be producing something.

Here is a movie that shows we're on the right track. There's a way to go (as you will see) but at least the movie shows what the rotation of Large Ship will look like. The movie is designed to rotate 600 frames at the rate of 30 frames per second, for 20 seconds.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/6dja13m4 … w9zom&dl=0

The next version will implement the "lamp" to illuminate the model.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

It has taken a while to puzzle out how to set up the camera and lighting for the model in this movie... The solution shown here is not yet where I'd like to be eventually, but at least we now have some light on the model.  The lamp type is changed from the default of point to sun, and the intensity of illumination dropped from 1000 default to about 200. It still seems too bright.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/cgdsi9tv … 1185h&dl=0

As before, the model rotates once in 20 seconds, which corresponds to the rate of 3 RPM, as specified by RobertDyck for Large Ship.

The movie should play from the browser, but you can download the file if you want to.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

The movie offered in post #11 showed rotation of the torus with the Sun stationary in the "sky".  This version shows the same torus rotating around the central hub and also rotating so that the Sun shows the entire surface of the model.  The camera follows the model around.

The work session today focused upon how to set up an additional rotation in the timeline.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

The movie below runs for 20 seconds .... it shows the rotation of the torus as in post #11, but instead of moving the Sun as in Post #12, this time the camera moves around the torus, as the Space Shuttle circled the ISS at one time.  In the next video, I'll start working on the material for the exterior of the torus.  The default is a plain white.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

I am working with ChatGPT4 to develop a Blender model of animation of the Cycloid Payload Delivery concept from 50 years ago.

In working with CH4 and with Blender, I have attempted to help CH4 to help me by providing information about the situation at any particular moment. In the learning process, I've been adding items to a checklist.  Here is CH4's summary of a checklist that any NewMars member (or a non-member viewer) can use to begin a Blender project with CH4 as a guide.  (CH3 may work as well).

Blender Project Status Checklist

>>> Apache Internal Server Error objected to something in the list

Whether you're new to Blender or refining your skills, navigating and managing your projects efficiently is key to a smooth workflow. Here's a comprehensive checklist to help you communicate your project status effectively, whether you're seeking assistance or collaborating with others:

This checklist aims to streamline communication and improve collaboration within the Blender community. Whether you're discussing projects on forums, working in a team, or seeking advice, these details can help clarify your needs and progress.

Re: Blender software Animation Visual effects 3D Printer models VR - Games

Here is a sample of Python code ChatGPT4 just showed me.  The question I asked CH4 was about how to automate some of the repetitive data structure definition that is needed for even such as simple project as the Cycloid Payload Delivery system. In light of the fact that Blender is being used to make full length animations, it is not surprising that developers have created tools to assist the designer.

Unfortunately Apache Internal Server Error objected to the Python code I was trying to post

If anyone is studying the Cycloid project, the current development phase is addition of text fields to show the status of various aspects of the simulation as it runs.   The automation need becomes apparent in consideration of the changes to the data that would occur every second, in a 30 second animation.  There are currently nine fields to be updated, and 30 update events.

Update 2024/10/13 .... notes for 3D printing of telescoping lift

20241013 Notes on Revised Design for 3D Printing of telescoping Lift

The solution is to print the top of the cylinder at the bottom.

After print is complete, rotate the cylinder so the flat ring is on top.

Print a slope ring at the top.  That slope ring will then be at the bottom in practice.

The flat surfaces will mate under air pressure.
