Re: Zoom Collaboration

For GW Johnson!

Thanks for your feedback.

I went back to Post #1 and added:

Call up zoom.com in your browser.

You'll see an invitation to join:

Select Join, and enter the meeting ID and passcode as given by kbd512.

I'm logged in and will see your name in the Waiting room

Re: Zoom Collaboration

I saw nothing on the page corresponding to zoom.com that indicated in any way how to access an ongoing zoom meeting.  I do NOT understand this stuff.  I NEVER HAVE understood this internet stuff.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

I clicked on "join host" and on "with video on",  and saw some sort of sign-in page for something I do not understand.  It asked for my email and my password (presumably my email password!!!), and I'll be damned if I give any passwords at all to anything I do not understand.

As I said,  none of this internet crap makes any sense to me at all.  Previous NewMars zoom sessions,  there was a meeting link to click in the thread on the forums.  That is how I got in before.  I have checked several of the 20 pages to that thread,  and found nothing I recognized as that link.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

GW,

You were on the "Sign in" screen, not the "Join" (join meeting screen), which is why it asked for the username and password.

If you click on the correct link in the upper right hand corner of the Zoom web page, it will ask for the Meeting ID and then it will ask for the Passcode.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

I’m not seeing a link to log on to the current Zoom meeting. It’s at 8:18pm Eastern time. Perhaps it’s not recognizing my log on email: rgregoryclark@gmail.com?

Re: Zoom Collaboration

RGClark .... thanks for writing!

Do NOT attempt to log in using an email address.

Instead, Join a meeting and use the credentials in Post #1

Enter ID first, and then passcode

Re: Zoom Collaboration

For Calliban and all other current NewMars members ....

The first Zoom meeting of the current season got off to a bit of a bumpy start, because my documentation of the procedure was lacking a few important details.

I will schedule the next meeting for next Sunday at midnight UTC, 7 PM Houston, and 8 PM Eastern.

In addition, I will go back and fine tune the log on instructions in Post #1.

I did not realize there were so many confusing options that a new Zoom member has to deal with.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

That link Brian posted in post 485 above is what got me into the meeting.  I could not find anything that would do that,  on the zoom page.  That link is critical for oldsters like me for whom nothing about any of this is intuitive.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

For GW Johnson re #491

Thanks for your feedback on kbd512's suggestion!

I will add that advice to the Post #1 immediately.

For all .... the time to test the Zoom connection is BEFORE the meeting starts.

You have all week to make sure your computer (or smartphone) works with Zoom, and connects to the NewMars Nightowl Waiting Room.

Speaking of Smartphones .... RGClark joined the meeting with his Smartphone, and the connection appeared to work well.  RGClark reported that he could see the video, which in this case meant he could see GW Johnson and a view out into the hot Texas evening sky behind him.

Thanks again to kbd512 for joining the meeting despite feeling under the weather.

A discovery we made is that there can be only ONE Host ... there can be more than one co-host, but there can only be one host.

I successfully transferred Host from Mars Society Volunteer to kbd512.

What remains unresolved is how to set up kbd512 as a co-host permanently, so he can log in and admit guests independently.

The first time we set up the Zoom for NewMars, I gave the password to the account to kbd512.  That worked well, but it is not ideal.

Fortunately, the leader of the local Linux User Group is a "Master" Zoom Host, so I'll ask him for advice next meeting.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Had a good time in the zoom meeting,  once I actually got in.  Kbd512 and I "ranted and raved" until after midnight.  He told me what his illness issue was,  and it's a real problem,  so I suggest all of us wish him well.  I certainly do!

Next time,  I will reposition at the kitchen table so the bright window is not behind me.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The NewMars Zoom is scheduled for the regular Sunday evening Nightowl, August 6, 2023.

Midnight UTC - 7 PM Houston - 8 PM Eastern

Post #1 of this topic has been enhanced with login / connection improvements.

Please test your connection well ahead of the meeting time.

No harm is done by logging into the waiting room when no meeting is scheduled.

What we CAN do is to confirm that everything works in our hardware and software.

Zoom updates the software frequently, so by testing ahead of time, we can make sure our software is up to date.

As present, my plan is to open the anchor station at 23:30 UTC, and to admit guests at midnight UTC.

Long range, I hope to discover/learn a way to set up kbd512 as a permanent co-host, so he can admit guests if I am not available.

***
RGClark connected by phone last Sunday, and from my perspective the connection worked well.  RGClark confirmed he was able to see the video of GW Johnson, while we were able to hear his voice clearly.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Thinking ahead ....

The Midnight UTC meeting time is convenient for US participants ...

Daylight savings will change eventually .... My recollection is that the meeting time in Europe changes to 1 AM if we hold to the existing times in the US.

We can adjust the meeting time forward if it would be helpful for European participants.

A special Zoom meeting is an option ...

If NewMars members would like to discuss a project, and if we can coordinate with a Host to set up the meeting, then that is an option.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

I am glad to see the zoom efforts are back online as well as seeing the forum members coming back as well.

Many thanks to the efforts to get the site back up while I did not even have a means to see emails from anyone.

Also, glad to see Kbd512 felling a bit better as well.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The weekly Nightowl Zoom is scheduled for Midnight UTC as usual.

The connection is available now for testing your equipment.

Visit the top post in the Zoom topic and confirm your equipment works.  You have multiple connection options for computers and smart phones.

RGClark confirmed the Smart Phone connection works well at the last meeting.

I am planning to set up the base station at 23:30 UTC, and leave it running.

I'm planning to start a co-host session at Midnight UTC to admit guests.

If kbd512 is able to attend, I am hoping he will agree to serve as co-host once again.

Now that we have been given this powerful communications tool by the Mars Society, I'd like to see us keep it working.
