The link above is no longer functioning, when tested 2023/07/11

However! Void has follow up with a report on current research that is available by link.

There may be some "life" in this old topic yet!

Re: Terraforming the new Venus - Discussing John Ackermans alternate view

This post did not receive any replies in 2004.

Does anyone in the current membership have a moment to investigate this link?

Almost 20 years have passed since this post appeared, and we (humans) know a bit more about Venus

Terraformer has this: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=5963

With my selfish notions, I see Venus as being a source of organic materials to be mined, and brought to the orbits of Venus.  But that is just me.

The question of life in the clouds of Venus has emerged again, so that is likely a priority question to answer.

Re: Terraforming the new Venus - Discussing John Ackermans alternate view

If we can cool Venus down enough, then most of its crushing CO2 dominated atmosphere will liquefy, forming seas on its surface.  As the crust cools and fractures, much of the LCO2 will drain into fissures within the crust, leaving us with some dry land.  Water vapour would outgas from the Venusian interior, at the crust cools releasing water from ringwoodite in the upper mantle.

This could in fact be a relatively near term project.  If humanity develops large scale space manufacturing in high Earth orbit this century, then we will almost certainly have mining facilities on the moon.  Lunar dust could be used to cool Venus, by using mass drivers on the lunar surface to shoot bags of lunar fines into the Venusian upper atmosphere.  This fine dust will remain suspended for many years, reflecting sunlight and absorbing a re-radiating sunlight.  This should block a large fraction of the suns heat from reaching the Venusian cloud layer.
