As a reminder for NewMars members who are willing to run Zoom to attend meetings online, the NSS chapter in Houston (North to be specific), will be opening the session for July on the Second Saturday at 2 PM Houston time 3 PM EST. Dr. Greg Stanley will be offering his report on space activity for the month, and I would be astonished if he did not allocate a few minutes to the new Hot Stage Separation concept that is in the news recently.
NewMars members who attend the event are NOT expected to turn on Video or Audio, and I notice that most attendees in recent times have these features turned off. There is a chat service that is (somewhat) attended. I'll ask my contact at the chapter to see if there is a volunteer willing to monitor the chat more closely.
There are chances that the quality of the video feed will improve over time. A professional has (apparently) volunteered to handle video, although whether that extends to the online experience is not clear to me at this point.

Today's NSS chapter meeting went very well indeed, from my perspective as one of the online attendees. The audio and video were both absolutely perfect. The leadership team found someone to care for the Internet feed, and that person either did a perfect job, or the equipment just worked perfectly. In any case, both speakers were easy to hear and to see, and the slide presentations worked flawlessly.

Dr. Stanley did spend a few minutes on the Hot Stage separation technique that SpaceX is reported to be planning. He found images from the US space program and the Russian one, showing examples of the technique in use. The wrinkle for SpaceX is to do everything the Russians and the Americans did, but to achieve reusability.

Doug Hall gave the full presentation he has prepared on NERVA, Timberwind, Russian designs, and DRACO, which is (apparently) a collaboration between DARPA and NASA. DRACO is targeting an on-orbit propulsion test in 2027, so most of us in NewMars should still be around to see it.

Ruben F. Salinas, a fellow National Space Society member, has graciously invited our group to participate in research focused on recreating the powerful overview effect using groundbreaking VR simulations. He is also a Commercial Astronaut soon flying to space with Blue Origin, as well as an active member of the prestigious Explorers Club.

Ruben is the Principal Researcher for a large (n=120) dissertation study focused on how the nervous system reacts to viewing our planet from space and experiencing the powerful emotion of awe, now known to be associated with the overview effect.

He will be visiting the Houston area during the weekend of August 4-6th and has graciously invited our group to participate. Appointment slot times are extremely limited, so if you’re interested, don’t delay and reserve your appointment now on this link.

The meeting of the North Houston NSS chapter just ended ...

Hopefully the video will be up on YouTube after some editing by the gent doing the recording.

The online experience is still a bit bumpy, but there are little adjustments that are nice to see...

For example, a way was found to click on an icon in Zoom to change to primary view from the speaker to the audience and back.

There were about the same number of guests on site as online .... 20 each for a total of about 40.

Dr. Stanley's presentation about space activities was interesting as usual. the presentation on Artemis included slides and videos.

The presenter is (apparently) a member of a team dedicated to insuring the health of the astronauts.

It seemed to me her overall knowledge of the huge, multiyear program was good, but understandably there were questions she could not answer. One aspect of the presentation that ** I ** appreciated was the mention of planning for (and practicing for) Mars, as a major component of the entire Artemis project.

The North Houston Space Society will not be meeting in October. Our normal meeting day coincides with the Johnson Space Center Open House. We encourage everyone to attend the JSC open house, as this is a rare opportunity to visit the NASA campus.

For All.... Dr. Greg Stanley will be giving his monthly report on space activities since the last meeting of the North Houston NSS chapter.

It is highly likely he will attempt to provide the best information available on the recent Starship test.

The meeting is scheduled for this coming Saturday afternoon at 2 PM Eastern time, 3 PM New Hampshire time.

The president of the North Houston chapter of NSS was selected to take part in an ISS controller training program. I just received an email update on his progress:

I followed up with Nathan by text message yesterday. He sat on console and sent his first set of commands to the ISS. They were test firing a thruster for a return mission and he had to rotate solar panels away from the plume and redirect some things to cope with suboptimal power production due to panels being at inefficient angle.

This coming Saturday's Zoom broadcast of the NSS meeting will be an opportunity for NewMars members to hear from Mr. Price directly, and even to offer a question via the Zoom Chat, if there is interest.

The meeting will start at the usual time of 2 PM Houston, 3 PM New Hampshire and early evening in Europe.

This meeting ** should ** be convenient for our European members.
