AI can help farmers and the environment by tracking bees on camera
https://www.smartcompany.com.au/industr … king-bees/

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a new way to track the insect pollinators essential to farming.

In a new study, we installed miniature digital cameras and computers inside a greenhouse at a strawberry farm in Victoria, Australia, to track bees and other insects as they flew from plant to plant pollinating flowers.

Using custom AI software, we analysed several days’ video footage from our system to build a picture of pollination behaviour over a wide area.

In the same way that monitoring roads can help traffic run smoothly, our system promises to make pollination more efficient. This will enable better use of resources and increased food production.

Macquarie Island, Australia (Part 2)
https://youtu.be/Yo82HdoCSRk
Macquarie Island is an island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. Regionally part of Oceania and politically a part of Tasmania, Australia, since 1900, it became a Tasmanian State Reserve in 1978 and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997

In some countries, producers of local and native plants have joined together in professional networks. German producers created a label with Regiosaaten (a German assurance of quality and origin) about 20 years ago, guaranteeing the traceability of wild and local plants. In France, the Végétal local label is a similar approach. The label has 75 members throughout France. In 2022, the brand received 25 new applications from farms, the first time since its creation in 2018. More recently, a European association, Native Seed, has joined these national networks. Its aims are to promote the "adoption of international standards for native seed in ecological restoration" and the "adaptation to the European native seed supply chain".
But to increase the availability of suitable plants for pollinators, it's not just the plant nurseries that need to change – mentalities must, too.

Spring flowers such as crocus, bluebells and forget-me-not can provide an early source of nectar for bees emerging from their winter nests

The most difficult part will be to provide gardeners with plants that are beneficial for pollinators. "It is very difficult to tell the difference between a genetically native specimen and a non-native one," says Berthon.
Frischie explains that, if you go to a traditional nursery market, you can buy a native plant but more often, these are treated with insecticides to make them bigger and taller. "Some insecticides just stay at the surface and decrease with watering, but others don't and stay on the plant during its lifetime. If you put this plant in your garden, even if it is a native one, it will kill pollinators," she says.

The risk of stinging humans?

Couple survive swarm attack of 10,000 bees - but left with stings all over their bodies
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-new … 0-29307274

A couple miraculously survived an attack by thousands of wild bees that were sent into a frenzy by raging forest fires.

Pruan Punta, 73, and his wife Saisuda Kwai-aun, 53, were sitting under a mango tree in front of their home in northern Tak province, Thailand, when a swarm of about 10,000 angry bees descended upon them.

The insects started divebombing the terrified couple, stinging them all over their bodies.

Pruan jumped into the nearby Ping River to avoid the stings, but his unfortunate wife, who suffered partial paralysis, was unable to escape and had to endure the full force of the bees' attack.

With the crazed swarm still following him, Pruan emerged from the water and ran 500 meters to his neighbor's house, where he called for help.

Volunteer creates an environment at Willamette Valley Vineyards for mason bees to thrive
https://news.yahoo.com/volunteer-create … 34771.html

Outside, a much smaller workforce buzzes, literally, with one of nature’s most critical jobs: pollination.

Mason bees are, to enthusiasts like Stephen Paisley, the underappreciated underdog of the bee family.

Pollinators are critical members of any ecosystem. They help plants reproduce.

“You lose pollinators, you lose a large portion of your food source,” Paisley said on a recent morning at Willamette Valley Vineyard.

Which is why Paisley has dedicated his retired life to mason bees. The vineyard’s former electrician is now its resident volunteer beekeeper.

Some beekeepers provide a pollination service to other farmers. These beekeepers might not produce any honey for sale. Pollination beekeepers move vast quantities of honey bee hives at night so fruits and vegetables have enough pollinating insects available for maximum levels of production. In 2016, almonds accounted for 86% of all U.S. expenditures on pollination services. For the service of maintaining strong colonies of bees and moving them into crops such as almonds, apples, cherries, blueberries, melons, and squash, these beekeepers are usually paid a cash fee.
