Today on Mars: 0037/05/09 Monday <<-- Days of the week offset 6 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2023/03/24))
One day note: Today is a skip day on Mars. The next skip day will be June 6th on Earth.
Today on Earth: 2023/04/30 Sunday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.  Ls 0 is the moment when the Sun appears to transit from one hemisphere to the other.  Update from Mars.NASA.gov (The Sun crosses the equator of Mars (Vernal Equinox)). The transition itself is a function of the tilt of an object with respect to the Solar plane. Per squarewidget.com, Hipparchus created the celestial coordinate system we use today.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars as seen from Earth
Todo: At next Aphelion/Perihelion record the Mars data J00##### (and set Search term)

Aphelion occurred at--- Ls 071 on Sol 152.  Aphelion Earth Dates: Earlier: 2017/10/07, 2015/11/20
Aphelion occurred near Ls 070 on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Note#3: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Note on data below: The figure quoted after distance is a rate of progress along the orbital path [exact meaning to be determined]
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun.
The figure computed to the right of "Difference" is the rate of change of the distance to Sun. Increasing to Aphelion/Decreasing to Perihelion.

Observation: The sky view is ** filled ** with objects and very few have been recorded and given identification by humans or their robot assistants
And! ** All ** the location assignments are from the perspective of Earth.  The entire catalog needs to be adjusted when inter-stellar travel begins
The work that lies ahead for the astronomical community is daunting - there is work ahead for centuries
2022/01/19 - All current (existing) stellar catalogs are computed with reference to the Earth.  Another civilization would use it's planet as reference.
Perhaps a Milky Way frame of reference will become necessary at some point. The Earth is as good a Zero point as any, for humans.

=== Mars is in Regular Movement as seen from Earth. Mars is progressing from right to left in the view from Earth.
Next up: Star just above path at far left: TYC 1910-693-1 Mg 11.72 RA 07h 24m 28.8s Day 0 -

Zoom Out Capability As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.
The site: theskylive.com does a terrific job of matching the view from Earth towards Mars, against a background of actual astronomical plates.
I wish there were a way (or rather, I wish I ** knew ** about a way that may exist) to enlarge the view until the entire galaxy is in view (Zoom out)
Update 2022/12/08 TheSkyLive.com provides a large view of selected objects: Select [Major Bodies] Then select [Information] in the body of interest
Update 2022/12/08 Scroll down to (body) Position and Finder Charts. Field of view is 50x30 degrees.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line heading straight to the left at a slight upward angle.
As of 2023/01/11, the curve of the path has returned to regular movement to the left border

Mars and Earth are moving apart after Opposition.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.
Mars and Earth were in Opposition (Earth center)  in December of 2022.  The date coincided with a (very rare) occultation of Mars by the Moon.
Mars and Earth appear to have been as close as they will get in this cycle. 81,454,323 kilometers on J0036644 Time: 4.53 minutes - 9 minutes round trip

Light travel in one second is (about) 300,000 kilometers. The distance covered in one minute is about 18,000,000 kilometers.
Estimated light times: 1:18, 2:36, 3:54, 4:72, 5:90, 6:108, 7:126, 8:144,9:162, 10:180, 11:198,12:216, 3:234, 14:252, 15:270, 16:288, 17:306
Light travel time today is between 14 and 15 minutes. Communications delay would be 28+ minutes round trip.

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.  Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Regular movement of Mars as seen from Earth resumed as of 2023/01/13. RA is once again increasing.
According to www.hercampus.com, Retrograde movement began October 30, 2022.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars movement will occur in months ahead.

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1. Viewed 2022/10/13: Opposition will occur some time in December of 2022.  Per earthsky.org, the date is December 8, 2022.

Sol 121 is Monday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.  Sol 049 was a skip day on Earth. Year 37 Sol 86 is next expected skip day.
===

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. <<== The current year on Mars is 37
Per www.planetary.org Year 36 started 2021/02/07 on Earth. Mars Year 37 began 2022/12/27 on Earth.

The last Skip Day occurred  April 30, 2023 on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
The next Skip day is expected June 6, 2023 (range 26th >> 28th) on Earth.  The next re-alignment will occur near: June 23, 2023

For those who may not be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.
The next cycle began on the first Sol of the period of coincidence. The  alignment of weekdays interval is in the range: (310 - 337)
To find the first day of a period of coincidence: Set up: SearchTerm(colon) and (colon)Alignment and J0036*

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for opposition/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 37  Martian Astronomical Month in 12 month format: 2 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 60 degrees

===
Solar Longitude: 058.8 Sol Number: 124  Change in degrees is +.4 Julian date is: J0037124
Solar Longitude: 058.4 Sol Number: 123  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0037123
Solar Longitude: 057.9 Sol Number: 122  Change in degrees is +.4 Julian date is: J0037122

Perihelion occurred at Ls 251 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2022/06/21 Next: (estimated) 2024/05/08
Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485  Earth Date 2020/08/03  Earlier:  2018/09/16, 2016/10/29

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   248,664,945 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +41256 <= 1719 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/03 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   248,623,689 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +42727 <= 1780 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/02 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   248,580,962 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +44175 <= 1841 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/01 (time 8:00) (24 hours)

Next up: Star just above path at far left on Day 0 – TYC 1910-666-1 Mg 11.43 RA 07h 29m 53.1s -
PGC 1691950 and PGC 1691270 Day 0 far left – Day 1 just ahead of Mars
TYC 1910-284-1 Mg 10.20 Day 0 -Day 1 above and just past Mars RA 07h 25m 52.1s – Day 2 at far right of view – last day for 284
===

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line heading left at a slight downward angle.

Sol 124 is in Month 05 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month  05 extends from Sol 113 through 140. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 02

Sol 124 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.  Sol 049 was a skip day on Earth. Year 37 Sol 86 is next expected skip day.
===

The next re-alignment will occur near: June 6, 2023

Next up: At far left another micro-Boomer: HIP 37522 Mg 7.32 Day 0 -
HIP 37400 Mg 8.46 just above path … at far left on Day 0 – Day 1 above and still ahead of Mars
===

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line heading left at a slight downward angle.

Light travel time today is between 15 and 16 minutes. Communications delay would be 30+ minutes round trip.

Sol 128 is Tuesday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.  Sol 049 was a skip day on Earth. Year 37 Sol 86 is next expected skip day.
===

The next re-alignment will occur near: June 6, 2023

Light travel time today is between 15 and 16 minutes. Communications delay would be 30+ minutes round trip.

Perhaps a Milky Way frame of reference will become necessary at some point. The Earth is as good a Zero point as any, for humans.

Today on Mars: 0037/05/22 Sunday <<-- Days of the week offset 6 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2023/04/30))

Today on Earth: 2023/05/13 Saturday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]
===

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for opposition/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 37  Martian Astronomical Month in 12 month format: 3 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 60 degrees

===
Solar Longitude: 063.2 Sol Number: 134  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0037134
Solar Longitude: 062.7 Sol Number: 133  Change in degrees is +.4 Julian date is: J0037133
Solar Longitude: 062.3 Sol Number: 132  Change in degrees is +.4 Julian date is: J0037132
===

Perihelion occurred at Ls 251 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2022/06/21 Next: (estimated) 2024/05/08
Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485  Earth Date 2020/08/03  Earlier:  2018/09/16, 2016/10/29

===
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   248,996,723 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +26537 <= 1106 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/13 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   248,970,186 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +28051 <= 1169 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/12 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   248,942,135 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +29495 <= 1229 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/11 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
===

Next up: Galaxy below path PGC 1670404 Day 0 at left RA 07h 53m 54.3s
TYC 1925-939/243/903 Day 0 at far left Day 1 just below Mars
===

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line heading left at a slight downward angle.
As of 2023/01/11, the curve of the path has returned to regular movement to the left border

Earth Distance 2023/05/13 276,616,666 (increasing)
Earth Distance 2023/05/12 275,354,888 (increasing)
Earth Distance 2023/05/11 274,150,819 (increasing)

Light travel time today is between 15 and 16 minutes. Communications delay would be 30+ minutes round trip.

Sol 134 is in Month 05 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month  05 extends from Sol 113 through 140. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 02

Sol 134 is Sunday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.  Sol 049 was a skip day on Earth. Year 37 Sol 86 is next expected skip day.
===

The next re-alignment will occur near: June 6, 2023

Refinements of the search include: Author: tahanson43206 Topic: Martian Politics and Economy (Specify Posts instead of Topics)

Light travel time today is between 15 and 16 minutes. Communications delay would be 30+ minutes round trip.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

The subject of days and festivals and marking historical events and weeks and time has come up again across the forum these past months

EDIT having trouble posting

I will refer to an old post by Void and make a general Solar system 'Timekeeping' post here, I might come back later to the post and maybe use some title  in a future thread topic.

in a previous newmars Void refers to 'Laplace Resonance'
https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8226

Io, Europa, and Ganymede created their own type of three-body orbital resonance called Laplace Resonance, coined by Pierre-Simon Laplace who discovered the equilibrium of their motion. Laplace was also known as the “French Newton” due to his contributions to the understanding of planetary motion and physics, amongst other big-brain findings.
https://jakobsauppe.com/infinityboundbl … -resonance

The amazing part is that this system is completely self-sustaining and orderly, producing an almost clock-like structure to its movement—particularly between Io and Ganymede. Io divides time into smaller increment with its period lasting about 1.77 Earth days per orbit around Jupiter, and Ganymede divides time into longer increments with an orbital period of roughly four times Io’s, or 7.1 Earth days.

Quote -

Who knew outer space could be so routine, right?

But Io-Europa-Ganymede isn’t the only Laplace example out there.

A clock on Jupiter might one day to apply to Exoplanets?

'Gleise 876, featuring its four planets. The outer three exhibit Laplace Resonance just like Io-Europa-Ganymede.'
https://jakobsauppe.com/infinityboundbl … -resonance

Animation of the 1:2:4 Laplace resonance between Ganymede, Europa, and Io. The labels indicate the ratios of orbital periods: Europa's is twice Io's, and Ganymede's is four times Io's.
https://www.planetary.org/space-images/ … lean-moons

Quote

It would be very desirable to have all four worlds operating according to circads of approximately the same duration, since one can easily envision a great deal of commerce between these worlds that are never separated by more than three million kilometers. Travelers between the Galilean planets could readily adjust to circads differing in duration by only a few minutes, but a variance of several hours between circads is sure to induce the ultimate in biorhythmic desynchronization; the "jet lag" we are familiar with on Earth would be minor by comparison.

While dividing the Ganymedean day by seven would result in a circad of 25.13 hours, a period much closer to the terrestrial solar day, the circads of Io and Europa just derived have already established the precedent of a shorter period for governing human events on two of the four the Galilean worlds.

2.0 THE CALENDARS OF JUPITER
http://ops-alaska.com/time/gangale_jupiter/jupiter.htm

3.0 THE DARIAN CALENDAR FOR TITAN
http://ops-alaska.com/time/gangale_satu … n_main.htm

The obvious solution is to divide the Titanian solar day into 16 circads. Each circad would therefore be 23 hours, 57 minutes, 13.11 seconds, or 0.998068439 days, hardly distinguishable from either the terrestrial day or the Martian sol.

As with the Galileans, the weekly calendar cycle must be considered in terms of the astronomical cycles of Titan. Titan makes one revolution of Saturn in 16 circads, but this is more than twice as long as the weeks on the Gregorian and Darian calendars, so it is more reasonable to define the Titanian week as half of a solar day, or eight circads. The eight-circad week also has its precedent on the Galilean calendars.
4.0 MONTHS AND YEARS

Since the purpose here is to construct a Darian calendar for Titan, the calendar year must be set to the Martian vernal equinox year of 686.9711 terrestrial solar days. The number of circads in the Martian vernal equinox year is:

    686.9711 (d/YMve) * 16 (cT/rT) / 15.969095 (d/rT) = 688.3006 (cT/YMve)

Dividing the year into 24 months:

    688.3006 (cT/YMve) / 24 (M/YMve) = 28.6792 (cT/M)

This is not much of a surprise, since on Mars the average month is 27.8579 sols, and the Martian sol is only 2.95 percent longer that the Titanian circad. What this means, however, is that whereas the number 32 very conveniently fit into a Martian year divided into 24 months for the Darian Galilean calendars, this same multiple of eight will not work as well for Titanian months, even though eight is the number of circads in a Titanian week.

As a result, were one to insist on an integral number of weeks in the months, a 688-circad year would contain fourteen 32-circad months and ten 24-circad months. It would be far more convenient to have months that did not vary so often and by so many circads. Since the average number of sols in a Martian month is nearly 28, the average number of circads in a Titanian month is not much more than that, and since 28 is divisible by four, weeks could be evenly bisected between months. As Table 3-1 shows, this results in a much more even arrangement of the months. All but four of the months would contain 28 circads. These are placed as the third month of each quarter, making the calendar year symmetrical.

Asteroids of the Alinda family are in or close to the 3:1 resonance. The orbital resonance of Jupiter and Moons in Celestial Mechanics occurs when orbiting bodies exert regular, periodic gravitational influence on each other, usually because their orbital periods are related by a ratio of small integers. In the rings of Saturn, the Encke and Keeler gaps within the 'A' Ring are cleared by 1:1 resonances with the embedded moonlets Pan and Daphnis, respectively.  Sol is a solar day on Mars; that is, a Mars-day. A sol is the apparent interval between two successive returns of the Sun to the same meridian sundial time seen by an observer on Mars and one of several units for timekeeping on Mars.
Europa orbits Jupiter every 3.5 days and is locked by gravity to Jupiter, so the same hemisphere of the moon always faces the planet. Jupiter takes about 4333 Earth days or about 12 Earth years to orbit the Sun a Jovian year.
The Mars system 1:4 Deimos–Phobos while Neptune's innermost moon, Naiad, is in a 73:69 fourth-order resonance with the next outward moon, Thalassa. As it orbits Neptune,
the more inclined Naiad successively passes Thalassa twice from above and then twice from below, in a cycle that repeats every ~21.5 Earth days, Haumea's presumed 7:12 resonance with Neptune in a rotating frame, The A Ring's outer edge is maintained by a destabilizing 7:6 resonance with the moon Janus, there is a motion resonance of 3:4 Hyperion–Titan Saturn's moons, 1:2:4 Ganymede–Europa–Io Jupiter's moons, ratio of orbits.

Void suggest people might one day live on Callisto saying it is far away from radiation and the best distribution of chemicals to support a starter civilization.

Light travel time today is between 15 and 16 minutes. Communications delay would be 30+ minutes round trip.

The next re-alignment will occur near: June 6, 2023

Sol 140 is Saturday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.  Sol ??? was a skip day on Earth. Year 37 Sol ??? is next expected skip day.
##

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. <<== The current year on Mars is 37
Per www.planetary.org Year 36 started 2021/02/07 on Earth. Mars Year 37 began 2022/12/27 on Earth.

The last Skip Day occurred  April 30, 2023 on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
The next Skip day is expected June 6, 2023 (range 26th >> 28th) on Earth.  The next re-alignment will occur near: June 6, 2023

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

===
Today on Mars: 0037/06/01 Sunday <<-- Days of the week offset 6 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2023/04/30))
One day note: First day of Month 6 – Month 6 has 27 days. It marks the end of the First Quarter.
Today on Earth: 2023/05/20 Saturday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]
======

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for opposition/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 37  Martian Astronomical Month in 12 month format: 3 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 90 degrees

===
Solar Longitude: 066.2 Sol Number: 141  Change in degrees is +.4 Julian date is: J0037141
Solar Longitude: 065.8 Sol Number: 140  Change in degrees is +.4 Julian date is: J0037140
Solar Longitude: 065.4 Sol Number: 139  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0037139
==#

Perihelion occurred at Ls 251 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2022/06/21 Next: (estimated) 2024/05/08
Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485  Earth Date 2020/08/03  Earlier:  2018/09/16, 2016/10/29

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   249,141,029 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +16169 <= 0674 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/20 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   249,124,860 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +17653 <= 0736 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/19 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   249,107,207 km [22.0 km/s] Difference is +19136 <= 0797 km/hour at 08.0 on 05/18 (time 8:00) (24 hours)
====*===

Next up: Star below path at far left on Day 0 – TYC 1389-1868-1 Mg 1285 -
TYC 1388-8-1 Mg 10.93 RA 08h 07m 40.6s  - Day 1 just past 11 hours past marker – last day for 1388-8-1
====#====#=

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line heading left at a slight downward angle.
As of 2023/01/11, the curve of the path has returned to regular movement to the left border

Light travel time today is between 15 and 16 minutes. Communications delay would be 30+ minutes round trip.
