I think English people should receive reparations from Morroco.  For centuries, young white girls were kidnapped by Islamic pirates from our coasts, so that disgusting Arab men could pay a fortune in gold for the privallage of breaking their hymens and then using them as domestic slaves until they died from malnutrition or the diseases that were inflicted upon them.  While we're at it, the French and Norwegians should pay us compensation for the genocide the Normans inflicted upon the English.  The Irish should pay the English compensation for centuries of terrorism and murder.  The English should pay the Irish compensation for outright failing to give them equal rights and exploiting the crap out of them.  The Scottish should pay the English compensation for looting and raping along England's northern borders for centuries.  The English should pay the Scottish compensation for the tyranny inflicted by Edward 1st.  Oh wait...he was a Norman bastard.  So that would be the Norse and French again!

I'm not likely to get anywhere with any of these absurd historical persecution complexes.  So why should anyone else?  You can't compensate the dead.  You can't punish the dead.  You cannot compensate someone for something that a long dead person, may have done to their long dead ancestors.  These black people do not deserve compensation.  Nobody deserves money that they havn't earned.  What they do arguably deserve is to be given equal consideration, based upon personal ability and performance for employment and other opportunities.

Re: Politics

Calliban,

Bravo!

Someone else understands how absurd this extortion racket has become.  We're talking about paying people who were not alive to be offended, for offenses committed by people who are also not alive to compensate anyone for the offenses they perpetrated upon others, which nobody alive today was around to bear witness to.  Somehow that will make society just or equal.  I thought we moved past the idea of privileging or punishing people based upon who their mommy and daddy were, back when they were still alive.

I guess the content of a person's character doesn't matter.  No agency and no personal responsibility is required.  That's a central feature of all forms of racism and bigotry.  They all believe in the most reductive forms of personal interaction imaginable- that superficial physical characteristics assign each person to some "special class of people" to be treated separately and differently from others.

My fellow Republicans took the Democrats' slaves away from them, but they still haven't learned their lesson about doing your own work and not stealing labor from others.

Re: Politics

Mars_B4_Moon,

Democrats hire people based upon what boxes they check and if they buy into party ideology.  Whether or not their candidate is suitable for the job they're about to be nominated to is utterly irrelevant.  We've seen this with Biden, Harris, Mayorkas, Buttigieg, Brinton, and now Washington.  All are either mentally disabled or grossly unqualified, to the point that they either have no cursory knowledge of what they're getting themselves into, or no ability to know because they're mentally disabled.

Every day President Biden is in office heaps more and more proof upon the evidence pile that President Trump was the most qualified person for the job, if only by default.  I didn't have to like the man personally and I was never going to meet him, but compared to the options offered he was far and away the best choice.  That's an indictment of our political system more than anything else.  A real estate developer / reality TV show star with potty mouth syndrome and 3AM mean tweets was somehow more qualified to run America than the career politicians we have now.  The funny thing is, if you compared what President Trump actually said or did, versus media reaction to it, it was no different than any other 1990s Democrats.  President Trump was a Democrat his entire life, right up until 2016.  I simply wanted to return to sane Democrat policies, because our only options are full-Democrat (bat guano crazy bizarro world antics) or Democrat-lite (trite blather with a few good ideas or policies here and there).

I'm certain that nobody in the Democrat Party has learned anything from the Biden catastrophe.  After all, their ideology defeated "Orange Man", and Orange Man bad.  Beyond that, they don't have anything to run on, except spending money we don't have to accomplish nothing, and perpetuating their ideology.  It's become a religious cult with no redeeming qualities.  The Democrats must have someone in their party who isn't a walking talking disaster area, but they never vote for those people.  I guess they can't abide sanity and sovereignty.  They're all too busy trying to out-Democrat each other.

Re: Politics

The Republicans are rightly concerned that the >US$30tn debt is becoming difficult to service, especially with rising interest rates.  Janet Yellens solution?  Extend the debt ceiling (yet again) and borrow even more to cover the interest payments of existing debt.  The idea of reducing spending is apparently unthinkable.  Borrowing more money to cover the interest on existing debt is essentially a public admission to bankrupcy.  It is absurdly irresponsible and is contributing to the slow erosion of the dollar as the leading global reserve currency.

Re: Politics

Calliban,

It's a value debt.  The paper is merely an object used to represent something of tangible value.  It's 30 trillion US dollars worth of IOUs that, further on down the line, something of economic value to someone, somewhere on the planet, would be created to repay the debt.  It's an energy and labor debt that cannot be covered, because our government is dishonest about its ability to provide goods and services to people it took lots of money from, but never exchanged something of value in return.

America is primarily responsible for coming up with new inventions that provide outsized economic return on investment.  We haven't done enough of that lately, at least not things which translated into goods or services so valuable that it would make up the difference between what was borrowed and what must be traded in to cover our borrowing.  What we owe is fast approaching 1 million metric tons of Platinum.  That's a staggering amount of material wealth.

Re: Politics

U.S. arms left in Afghanistan surface in Pakistan Taliban insurgency
https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Terror … insurgency
The Taliban regime in Kabul issued several denials that the TTP and other militant groups had access to the abandoned equipment.

The 'Taliban' an almost stone age terrorist culture probably don't think of economics so much.

Some jihads like Taliban could never put islamics in space but NASA or Russia for example could spread mohammedan Mosque culture into outer space or invest to spread islamism across the Solar system. As insane as it sounds to spread islamism to space that's what our economic system is across most of the world, it is 'insane' the House of cards an unstable or weak structure or plan based on fake unstable foundations, nobody wants to tell you 'The Emperor Has No Clothes' because it might cause panic, when the rioters take to streets, things can collapse Zimbabwe, Venezuela style it is better to say everything is fine and kick the can down the road, that is the system not just the USA but across the West and most of the world. The good news they tell you is an economic war will be won, as Russia's ruble has crashed 20% as Ukraine war costs pile up, the is a race to the bottom bury yourself in an Ocean of debt and the other guys should crash first!

On the topic Deficit, Expenditure, Debt ceiling, Payments...I'm not sure but let's imagine Mars has American culture and people living there and it were to build a similar economic system to the USA.

In regard to spending, it might soon be a time where some of the biggest debts are interest on debt obligations, you take loans to pay interest on other interest payments. NASA is often bashed by the media but it gets less than half of 1%. Maybe you can thank Putin's invasion of Ukraine but world military expenditure passed $2 Trillion. The Banker Bailouts in the 2007-2008 recession and Covid relief were part of very large expenditures. The deficit number doesn't add up so each year there will be a difference between trillions in revenue and trillions in spending, the government issues securities such as Treasury notes, which are purchased by investors sometimes a super elite rich Royal private person or a nation buys the Dollar or Bond, they can sell printed money to raise funds to cover the deficit, in news media nobody is 100 % sure who the USA owe money to but it is thought Japan and China are two countries whose governments "own" significant amounts. In spending there is also Social Security, Medicare, the Defense Military stuff or Federal Aid on the 'Arts' in California and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Education Programs, some of these programs rank on high level that take a big percentage of the budget, interest on previous debts is in hundreds of billions. You cant always get whatever spending program you dream of investing in 'Fusion' technologies or NASA Having a human Colony / city on Mars or Housing and Urban Development are part of Discretionary Spending and are not part of a long term obligated commitment and part of an Irregular Budget. Spending such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are re-classed and marked as transfer payments and payments are reconsidered into other category therefore are not accounted for in GDP calculation. Sometimes a party in opposition to the government can go against the President and try a government shut down, cry out and shout that too much money is spent on programs and shut down the system, there might be a point to this protest as in the future it will be impossible to collect enough taxes and mandatory programs may absorb all federal revenues.

Re: Politics

It seems 3 banks collapsed, California's SVB one of the big ones.

This could also go in the Alt Privatization or Commercial Space threads

Space firms regain access to Silicon Valley Bank accounts
https://spacenews.com/silicon-valley-ba … nt-access/

Space startups breathed a collective sigh of relief after the U.S. government moved to protect all deposits placed with the Silicon Valley Bank.

“We’d been panicking all weekend,” said Mark Boggett, CEO of U.K.-based venture capital firm Seraphim Space.

When A third of the Seraphim Space portfolio companies had funds locked in SVB accounts.

Before the U.S. government stepped in, only funds up to $250,000 were protected, via the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
Public and Private Reports

Launch companies Rocket Lab and Astra Space, which are not in the Seraphim Space portfolio, were among the most high-profile space firms exposed to SVB’s collapse. Because they are public companies, Rocket Lab and Astra had to report funds at risk through SVB’s collapse as material events.

Dozens of private space companies were also affected. While they also spent the weekend scrambling to understand the impact of SVB’s failure on their deposits and investments, they were not forced to disclose those concerns.

“Now nobody is going to lose any money,” Boggett said. “And as of today, everyone has got access to their bank accounts.”
SVB UK Subsidiary

Meanwhile, SVB’s subsidiary in the United Kingdom is being sold to London-headquartered bank HSBC in a deal that would safeguard deposits.

“SVB UK customers can continue to bank as usual, safe in the knowledge that their deposits are backed by the strength, safety and security of HSBC,” HSBC CEO Noel Quinn said in a statement.

SVB reported total deposits of about $175 billion at the end of December. HSBC announced March 13 that it was taking over SVB UK deposits of about 6.7 billion pounds($8.2 billion).

Boggett praised how quickly governments and financial institutions were able to step in to placate markets.

“It had to be fast because otherwise there is contagion,” he said, and “we would have been facing a 2008 financial crisis.”

“It’s a major risk that nobody had in their sights,” Boggett added.

Fear of financial crisis unleashed chaos across markets this week. These 7 charts show how the shockwaves engulfed stocks, bonds, and commodities.
https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/fear- … 03816.html
The current bout of financial-market turbulence stems from a string of bank collapses over the past week or so. Silicon Valley Bank folded last Friday in the second-biggest such collapse in history. That came just days after Silvergate Capital shut down, and was quickly followed by the closing of Signature Bank.
These events have ignited investor anxiety over the financial health of regional US banks including First Republic and Western Alliance, as well as the Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse, which has been battling internal troubles for years.

Re: Politics

SpaceNut I do not believe this is easily fixed I think the Satellite is stuck on the ground under Russian control they are more or less almost complete with many satellite launches already done. The founder of the company is an American tech entrepreneur, engineer, the first launch was Soyuz from French Guiana in South America but then perhaps Russians made excuses like its too warm or something and moved launches to Baikonur Cosmodrome, war came and after the invasion of Ukraine the British government pulled its stake in OneWeb while sanctions were put on Russian trade, next I believe a Hindu paper reported India would launch their sats, and then Space-X started launching One-Web. The satellite company OneWeb has multiple investors from France, Japan, India and South Korea.
