SpaceNut remembered that solar water heaters were developed and implemented in California in the early 1900's...
This topic is offered in hopes NewMars members might be interested in collecting information about the history of such systems, and reporting on any future developments that might occur, for home or industrial purposes.
I asked Google what it might be able to find, and it came back with what looks like a significant collection of snippets...
Back in the early 1900's solar water heaters were common in California and Florida. As electricity became available and cheap, people started using it to heat their hot water. The solar collector is basically the same as it was back then.

It will be assumed that man will make use of electrical hot water onboard any ship or destination as its the simplest to implement but is it the most or least energy efficient for how to do when the source of power is out. We know that a design does have many variations that can improve just as much as drop its collection of energy that is possible.
These old solar hot water tanks were just batch heating thermal syphon style, and it has come a long way with flat panel collectors and solar concentrating units of many flavors and materials being used of course now in a wide range of temperate zones.
There are lots of these on the build it solar site to choose a design and build to make it your own as a do it yourselfer.
