Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #1625

First, glad to see you back on the board!

Second, thanks for the link to the article about the Retrograde movement that is under way ...

A bonus during ‘Mars Retrograde’ is also the planet’s eclipse by the moon. An event that takes place only once every two years and this year it is scheduled for on December 8, 2022, Forbes reports.

Sources used:

-Forbes: ‘Mars Retrograde 2022: The Biggest, Brightest (And Backwards) Phase Of The Red Planet Begins Today’

I was not aware of the eclipse of Mars by the Moon, and am glad to have ** that ** to look forward to on December 8th!

The event should be visible with binoculars, or perhaps even with the unaided eye in regions with dark skies.

Update a bit later .... I'm sure it is just coincidence, but ** by coincidence ** the Moon will be full on December 8th, so the eclipse of Mars will be a bonus.

TheSkyLive web site will surely show the Moon in the near vicinity of Mars as the event occurs.  TheSkyLive tries to present objects in relative size, so I am looking forward to seeing how they show the Moon with respect to Mars.

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 336.8 Sol Number: 626  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036626

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.  Ls 0 is the moment when the Sun appears to transit from one hemisphere to the other.  The transition itself is a function of the tilt of an object with respect to the Solar plane. Per squarewidget.com, Hipparchus created the celestial coordinate system we use today.

Note#3: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Note on data below: The figure quoted after distance is a rate of progress along the orbital path [exact meaning to be determined]
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun.
The figure computed to the right of "Difference" is the rate of change of the distance to Sun. Increasing to Aphelion/Decreasing to Perihelion.

Observation: The sky view is ** filled ** with objects and very few have been recorded and given identification by humans or their robot assistants
And! ** All ** the location assignments are from the perspective of Earth.  The entire catalog needs to be adjusted when inter-stellar travel begins
The work that lies ahead for the astronomical community is daunting - there is work ahead for centuries
2022/01/19 - All current (existing) stellar catalogs are computed with reference to the Earth.  Another civilization would use it's planet as reference.
Perhaps a Milky Way frame of reference will become necessary at some point. The Earth is as good a Zero point as any, for humans.

--- Mars has begun Retrograde Movement as seen from Earth. On 2022/10/30 the reverse began.
Next up: galaxy in path and at 35 hour marker on Day 0: PGC 136019 RA 05h 32m 37.8s

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.
The site: theskylive.com does a terrific job of matching the view from Earth towards Mars, against a background of actual astronomical plates.
I wish there were a way (or rather, I wish I ** knew ** about a way that may exist) to enlarge the view until the entire galaxy is in view.
Update 2021/07/30 I wrote to an astronomer to ask if there might be a web site with a view showing the galaxy in context of a given view.
Update 2022/01/22 What I'm asking for is a "Zoom Out" feature.  If anyone knows of such a service, please contact the NewMars portal.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Earth Distance 2022/11/12 86,099,888  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/11 86,573,325  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/10 87,071,622  (decrease)

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.

Light travel in one second is (about) 300,000 kilometers. The distance covered in one minute is about 18,000,000 kilometers.
Estimated light times: 1:18, 2:36, 3:54, 4:72, 5:90, 6:108, 7:126, 8:144, 9:162, 10:180, 11:198,12:216, 13:234, 14:252, 15:270, 16:288, 17:306
Light travel time today is between 4 and 5 minutes. Communications delay would be 8+ minutes round trip.

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.  Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Update 2022/10/23 According to www.hercampus.com, Retrograde movement began October 30, 2022.
That would mean I've been incorrectly reporting the Eastward movement of Mars (with respect to Earth)
Mars has been moving Eastward as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars. Movement is now to right (decreasing RA) 2022/11/05.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars movement will occur in months ahead.
Eastward movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520 - Update 2022/11/01 Eastward movement ended and Westward movement has begun

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1. Viewed 2022/10/13: Opposition will occur some time in December of 2022.  Per earthsky.org, the date is December 8, 2022.

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. <<== The current year on Mars is 36
Per www.planetary.org this occurred February 7, 2021 (on Earth). The new Mars Year was 36.

The last Skip Day occurred  October 10,  2022 on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
The next Skip day is expected November 16, 2022 (range 15th >> 17th) on Earth.  The next re-alignment will occur 37*7-3 Days out: June 23, 2023

For those who may not be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.
The next cycle began on the first Sol of the period of coincidence. The  alignment of weekdays interval is in the range: (310 - 337)
To find the first day of a period of coincidence: Set up: SearchTerm(colon) and (colon)Alignment and J0036*

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 338.5 Sol Number: 629  Change in degrees is +.6 Julian date is: J0036629

Aphelion occurred near Ls 070 on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

One Day note: Today is Skip Day on Mars (in the enclosed environment of the Mars Business Calendar)

Today on Mars: 0036/23/17 Tuesday <<-- Days of the week offset 2 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2022/11/17))

Today on Earth: 2022/11/16 Thursday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for oppositon/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 339.5 Sol Number: 630  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036630
Solar Longitude: 339.0 Sol Number: 630  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036630
Solar Longitude: 338.5 Sol Number: 629  Change in degrees is +.6 Julian date is: J0036629
---

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.  Ls 0 is the moment when the Sun appears to transit from one hemisphere to the other.  The transition itself is a function of the tilt of an object with respect to the Solar plane. Per squarewidget.com, Hipparchus created the celestial coordinate system we use today.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars as seen from Earth
Todo: At next Aphelion/Perihelion record the Mars data J00##### (and set Search term)
Perihelion occurred at Ls 251 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2022/06/21 Next: (estimated) 2024/05/08
Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485  Earth Date 2020/08/03  Earlier:  2018/09/16, 2016/10/29
Aphelion occurred at--- Ls 071 on Sol 152.  Aphelion Earth Dates: Earlier: 2017/10/07, 2015/11/20
Aphelion occurred near Ls 070 on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   225,506,689 km [24.4 km/s] Difference is +195659 <= 8152 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/17 (time 8:00) <<== 24 hours
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   225,311,030 km [24.4 km/s] Difference is +195600 <= 8150 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/16 (time 8:00) <<== 24 hours
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   225,115,430 km [24.4 km/s] Difference is +195534 <= 8147 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/15 (time 8:00) <<== 24 hours

Galaxy PGC 1714173 RA 05h 28m 36.2s above path Day 0 ahead of 26 hour marker - Day 1 inside 12 hour marker
Galaxy PGC 1712145 RA 05h 30m 26.0s above path - Day 0 ahead of 14 hour marker - Day 1 past 24 hour marker
---

Earth Distance 2022/11/17 83,967,000  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/16 84,329,149  (decrease)

The last Skip Day occurred  November 17,  2022 on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
The next Skip day is expected December 24, 2022 (range 15th >> 17th) on Earth.  The next re-alignment will occur near: June 23, 2023

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

SearchTerm:Planetarium by NASA showing Mars (and many other objects) in their orbits in (close to) real time

https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/solar-syst … /overview/

Mars and the Earth are approaching each other as Earth swings below Mars.

Today, Mars stopped accelerating in it's progress along it's own ellipse.

The number reported by TheSkyLive.com is 8155 kilometers per second.

Earth distance is given as 83,327,570 kilometers.  That number will decrease further through (about) December, at which point Earth will be exactly between Mars and the Sun (Mars opposition).

Per Mars.NASA.gov, Mars opposition will occur December 8, 2022.

The distance between the planets will drop to 62.07 million kilometers.

In addition, the Moon will eclipse Mars (lunar occultation) on December 8th.

This event ** should ** be visible in TheSkyLive.com Mars display.

: galaxy directly in path PGC 1712963 RA 05h 26m 23.9s Day 0 just ahead of 24 hour marker - Day 1 just in front of Mars
Galaxy PGC 1714173 RA 05h 28m 36.2s above path Day 0 ahead of 26 hour marker - Day 3 outside 22 hour marker and near left border

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/23/23 Monday <<-- Days of the week offset 2 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2022/11/17))

Today on Earth: 2022/11/23 Wednesday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Solar Longitude: 342.7 Sol Number: 636  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036636
Solar Longitude: 342.2 Sol Number: 635  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036635
Solar Longitude: 341.7 Sol Number: 634  Change in degrees is +.6 Julian date is: J0036634

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   226,680,862 km [24.3 km/s] Difference is +195617 <= 8151 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/23 (time 8:00) <<== 24 hours
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   226,485,245 km [24.3 km/s] Difference is +187520 <= 8153 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/22 (time 8:00) <<== 23 hours
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   226,297,725 km [24.3 km/s] Difference is +203875 <= 8155 km/hour at 9.0 on 11/21 (time 9:00) <<== 25 hours

Next up: TYC 1851-408-1 RA 05h 19m 02.0s Mg 10.96 just below path Day 0 far right
TYC 1851-971-1 Mg 11.43 RA 05h 22m 01.0s below path - Day 0 ahead of 2 hour marker - Day 1 ahead of Mars itself - Day 2 below 20 hours past marker
---

---
Earth Distance 2022/11/23 82,252,857  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/22 82,449,337  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/21 82,714,666  (decrease)

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.
Mars and Earth will be in Opposition (Earth center)  in December of 2022.  The date will coincide with a (very rare) occultation of Mars by the Moon.

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 344.3 Sol Number: 639  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036639

Aphelion occurred at--- Ls 071 on Sol 152.  Aphelion Earth Dates: Earlier: 2017/10/07, 2015/11/20
Aphelion occurred near Ls 070 on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/23/28 Saturday <<-- Days of the week offset 2 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2022/11/17))

One day note: This is the last day of Month 23 in the Proposed Business Calendar for Mars.

Today on Earth: 2022/11/28 Monday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Solar Longitude: 345.3 Sol Number: 641  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036641
Solar Longitude: 344.8 Sol Number: 640  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036640
Solar Longitude: 344.3 Sol Number: 639  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036639

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending slightly up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Earth Distance 2022/11/28 81,542,578  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/27 81,633,333  (decrease)
Earth Distance 2022/11/26 81,749,724  (decrease)

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.
Mars and Earth will be in Opposition (Earth center)  in December of 2022.  The date will coincide with a (very rare) occultation of Mars by the Moon.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

This post is primarily for SpaceNut, but it is also "for the record"

As we approach the end of Year 36 on Mars, I have once again attempted to find a publisher for a Mars Business Calendar.

We are in the final month of the second Mars year of tracking the progress of Mars around it's orbit, and the proposed Mars Business Calendar has stood up well with the passing of the Sols.

I have asked for assistance in finding a publisher, and am expecting to receive a document with advice/procedure.

This post will be updated if/when the document arrives.

SearchTerm:Calendar publishing procedure
SearchTerm:Publish Mars Business Calendar procedure

UPdate upon receipt of advisory on product submission procedure...

This is NOT what is needed for Mars Business Calendar.  What IS needed is a company that produces products that meet these standards.

However, this document ** is ** valuable because it shows what is needed for the final stage of the process, when distribution by a major web site is needed.

As requested, here's all the information and details you need for your request.

Thank you for your interest in Go! Calendars and Calendars.com. In an effort to lead the marketplace, we are always looking for exciting new products to sell at our stores. Unsolicited submissions will be carefully considered in order to choose the products best suited for our stores. We base our buying decisions on variables including (but not limited to) content, packaging, pricing and availability of comparable items within the marketplace. We also take sales trends and our current inventory levels into consideration when making decisions.

The majority of our buys will be made by the end of February. In order to have the best chance to be included in our product mix, please make sure your submission is received between the months of January and February. While we will accept late submissions, we can only create POs for late submissions as space and budget permits.

We encourage interested vendors to send us a sample of your product. If you are sending a calendar sample, do not send original artwork as this will not be returned. We can accept a previous year’s calendar as a submission (however please be sure to include the current year’s front and back cover imagery). Again, please be advised we will not return any submissions.

Mail samples to:

    Go! Retail Group
    ATTN: Calendar Buying Department
    6411 Burleson Road
    Austin, TX 78744

Additionally, in lieu of sending a physical sample you may also email images for consideration to buyers@calendarholdings.com. Please note that when buyers are able to review a product in person, this will have a bigger impact on buying decisions than photos alone.
Please include a cover letter with your submission that includes the following:

Your name, company name, address, phone and fax numbers, website and email address. Please note that an email address is required for all submissions.
    Your suggested retail price.
Date your calendar or product would be available for shipping to our warehouses. We require all product to be in our warehouse by July 15, however we can accept incoming shipments as early as May.
Please let us know if there are special regions where you feel your title will sell well.
Tell us what differentiates your product from others already on the market.
Include examples of marketing and promotional content, any recent publicity, reviews, or articles. We will also accept data discs, download links, or thumb drives with high resolution print-ready promotional images. This will help us to determine the ease of marketability for your product.
Also let us know if the artist/subject is available for in-store signings or events, if applicable.
Advise us of any cooperative advertising funds you offer – we offer prime graphic real estate within our stores for vendors that want their products to stand out!

Please allow us 6-8 weeks to contact you with our decision. Our decisions are made after we have reviewed all available titles. Please do not call, email, or message our social media pages during this time.

All buying decisions are made through the Calendar Holdings LLC Merchandising Department in Austin, Texas. Do not solicit our individual stores, as they do not have the authority or buying power to add titles to their individual stores.

Things to be aware of:

Wall calendars must be shrink-wrapped with a B-flute, 175lb test single-wall cardboard stiffener inserted in them.
Make sure your product is priced competitively with other similar titles on the market. Calendars typically range in price from $12.99-$15.99 for a standard 12″x12″ wall calendar.
The US retail price must be printed or stickered on the back cover of your product. The prices must be human-readable.
Your product must have a scannable UPC or EAN barcode.
If Calendar Holdings LLC accepts your product for distribution, we will send you a Purchasing Terms Contract and Vendor Compliance Kit (stating our database, product, shipping, and accounting requirements) to review and sign.
You will also be required to complete our database spreadsheet with product specifications. Only after all of these steps have been completed will we be able to issue a purchase order.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

We will be well into Year 37 on Mars, before any of the requirements described above can be met.

A key requirement is a computer program able to deliver the matching Earth and Mars dates needed, as well as the corresponding Astronomical calendar on Mars that runs concurrently with the Business Calendar for Mars.  This would be a development project suitable for NewMars members who are gifted with the needed abilities, knowledge, tools and (above all) time!

Finding pictures is probably less of a concern, since (by now) a great number of images have been collected by spacecraft and rovers from multiple Nations.

Licensing the use of those images would be a purely business function, which should not require invention or development.

---

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending slightly up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

The next Skip day is expected December 24, 2022 (range 15th >> 17th) on Earth.  The next re-alignment will occur near: June 23, 2023

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   228,436,622 km [24.1 km/s] Difference is +194476 <= 8103 km/hour at 08.0 on 12/02 (time 8:00) <<== 24.0 hours

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   228,047,597 km [24.1 km/s] Difference is +194909 <= 8121 km/hour at 08.0 on 11/30 (time 8:00) <<== 24.0 hours

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending slightly up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Earth Distance 2022/12/02 81,483,857 (increasing)

Earth Distance 2022/11/30 81,454,323  (holding)

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.
Mars and Earth will be in Opposition (Earth center)  in December of 2022.  The date will coincide with a (very rare) occultation of Mars by the Moon.
