Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re Email Outreach campaign ....

Today's candidate is another real old-timer !!! singerry is member 413, after RobertDyck (274).

He used yahoo as an internet provider, so the provider is still around, but it is 19 years since the email address was registered.

A ** lot ** has happened since then ...

Let's see what we can discover...

Topic: Re: Civilization and Culture » Architecture on Mars - radically different than Earth?

singerry wrote:

I just joined this forum/discussion/website whatever and read the postings on martian architecture with interest.  I actually wrote my masters thesis in urban planning on this topic, it's really interesting stuff.  I want to put in my vote for concrete as a building material.  Light weight formwork can be dropped from Earth and used again and again.

I also want to float the idea of "tenting" between buildings creating an "outdoor" space between structures that could be used as storage,  greenhouses, or a living environment.  A settlement could grow organically like this: when new buildings are built more "outdoor" space would be created by covering the space between them and the existing structures.

The actual material used to create this space is a little unclear to me.  I've read somewhere it would be made of kevlar to contain the pressure.  Don't know how it manages the radiation.

Shaun Barrett from Caims, Queensland, Australia gave a nice response the next day.

And the topic ended there.

Well, for whatever reason singerry did not continue, so I'll be surprised if (they) respond to SpaceNut's email.

The email will be on it's way shortly.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re Email Outreach ....

In this early going, we seem to be swinging wildly from the most extreme spammer to revered ancient members who only posted once.

I literally have NO idea what we will discover today, other than that the username will most likely begin with "s" because the input was sorted alphabetically inside post count.

So! Who is our candidate?  silikonrat Member 493 (right after RobertDyck) registered in 2003

The email address provider is a college .... I'll check that with ping ... disappointing .... umr.edu was not found.

I asked Google to dig a bit deeper, and if found a reference to the University of Minnesota at Rochester.

That entity is now using the url of r.umn.edu.

So the 2003 url is no longer available.

The registration is recorded as:
Last post: 2003-07-06 19:42:48

What topic did this (possible college student) select for (their) one post:
Human missions » new organization needs help »

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 143#p17143

The post itself is quite long .... it ** definitely ** has the aspect of an energetic college student

If anyone decides to read the post, please do not be put off by the word choices in the phrase "We execute them".  I am ** pretty ** sure the author was referring to ideas and not to people.

Well, we have NO way of contacting this person.  I would have been interested to learn what became of this ambitious initiative.

The posts by nirgal and Ranger_2833 are (perhaps) more interesting, and they have the advantage of being short:

nirgal wrote:

LMAO! What a crazy bunch of fanatics!

Ranger_2833 wrote:

Is this some kind of University of Missouri research project, or just some unrelated drivel from a UMR student?

Well! ** That ** was interesting.

One hint came out of the post by Ranger_2833 .... perhaps this web site was associated with the University of Missouri in 2003.

Today the University of Missouri uses "missouri.edu"

Google thought it might have been University of Minnesota at Rochester.

As reported earlier, that entity now goes by "r.umn.edu"

Tomorrow we will have another adventure in the "s" series.

Today's candidate is Shaltai

The email provider is gmail so we know we can send email if everything else checks out.

However, the email user name does not match the forum username, so i am dubious ... let's see what we have ...

Boy! Those were different times!

There was a sense of optimism in the air, that the US and Russia might be able to cooperate on a Space Mission to Mars.

The topic started by our candidate went on for 16 posts, with the closing one by SpaceNut.

For whatever reason, our candidate never returned, after starting a topic that took off, only to die out without resupply.

Because the email provider is gmail, it is possible to send one of SpaceNut's invitations, but the username may no longer be in use.

In any case, the landscape for US/Russian cooperation on a Mars mission has certainly changed!

For SpaceNut ... as you have noticed, the FluxBB email server is NOT particularly reliable.

You should have received a confirmation email ** every ** day I report I'll be sending email.

I send you one confirmation email, and I send myself two .... there are days when no confirmation emails arrive at all, days when only one arrives, and occasionally both arrive.

It appears from your report that you are seeing similar hit-or-miss behavior.

I watch the outgoing email to the candidate in every case, but I have no way of knowing what FluxBB does after accepting the request.

Deployment and service of complex scientific instruments in space require humans. Complex tasks can't be done by robots. Imagine how much information about the universe and other Earth-like planets would give us an array of optical and radio telescopes placed on the opposite side of the Moon. This megastructures can't be kept running without human intervention. Robots are just not smart enough.

Drilling Marsian surface kilometers deep in search for life can't be done by robots only. There are a lot of things in space that only humans can do.

Scientists need humans in space.

This was a thoughtful post in the middle of an ongoing topic ... apparently the discoverer of the Van Allen belt had made a statement that upset the membership.

This candidate definitely will be offered one of SpaceNut's emails, but things have changed a lot since 2004.

OK! The IP is provided >> linode.com - United States >> Richardson, Texas

I ** still ** think the email user name looks made-up .... let's see what else we can discover

OK we have ** another ** IP address to investigate.... the email address may have been legitimate, but it may have been stolen by hackers.

Now ** this ** makes more sense ... the IP saved with the Registration is in Russia at spacenet.ru

However, instead of using an email in Russia, this candidate has claimed an email address in Texas.

That is possible, but it seems to me unlikely.

For Thanksgiving Day we have a candidate who looks plausible at first encounter ...

The user name is SEE

This is a long post, and I found it worth taking the time to read.  SEE seems to have most facts line up appropriately, as he makes various recommendations for how to proceed with respect to the Moon and Mars.

I think that ** some ** of their predictions from 2001 might deserve adjustment 20+ years later, but it general I think the post still stands up fairly well.

I think SEE is ** way ** too pessimistic about the prospects for agriculture on the Moon, since 24 hour lighting is available with a bit of engineering.

The post by SEE is #29 in a long running topic: Human missions» Mars? Moon first. - Mars is too hard and dangerous for now.

The topic itself persisted for 5 pages and reached post #130 with one of Mars_B4_Moon's updates on 2022-09-23.

Well, I doubt we'll hear anything from SEE after 21 years, but the email provider exists, and the post was thoughtful.

I'll send one of SpaceNut's emails as a Thanksgiving offering!

scott is member 617 from 2007 .... a member of the First Wave!

The email provider no longer exists!

I asked Bing for a history of tca.net, and it found a possible match: TCA The Community Agency

Assuming tca.net existed at one time, it may have been acquired.  BroadbandNow appears to be using the expression the-community-agency.

In any case, there won't be an email going to scott today.

However, we ** can ** find out which topic scott chose for their one and only post:

I do note the post by jadeheart, from barrow, Alaska.  jadeheart has 134 posts of record, so they will be showing up many Moons from now.

Even if it is a joke, it's going to give the concept huge publicity, and probably get a lot of people thinking about it seriously.

Meanwhile, the Mars Society is going to be reaching out to both companies, thanking them for acknowledging us and offering to help if the idea ever becomes real. Who knows? Maybe we'll catch their attention long enough to be able to do some serious collaborative work.

Space-Ops...An online, forum-based, role-playing game of space exploration, science, technology and adventure.

Join us in a realistic simulation of a Mars base conducting human exploration of Mars.

The spirit of the game is to encourage and develop interest in space exploration, with an initial focus on human exploration of Mars. We hope to expand the game into all areas of space exploration, such as Moon settlement, asteroid mining, space tourism, etc.

That was an ambitious project for the time.  I wonder how things turned out.

No one in the forum at the time chose to respond.  Perhaps gaming wasn't of interest to the group.

www.space-ops.net still responds to ping.

The IP address indicates the site is hosted by Google.

OK ... so what happens when we open space-ops.net?

Answer: Not much!  GoDaddy says: space-ops.net is parked free, courtesy of GoDaddy.net [Get this Domain]

I'm going to send the email.  Even though that early effort is no longer active, it clearly opened on a note of optimism.

18 years have passed, and a lot has happened.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re #146 ... thank you for confirming you received the verification email yesterday.  Today was "volunteer" day here, so the email script took a break. I peeked at tomorrow's candidate, and think there is a better than 50% chance we'll be able to send an email, but (as always) it remains to be seen.

Topic for one (and only) post:  Life on Mars » Did we introduce life to Mars via space probes? »

Sandaan started the topic and then never returned.

SpaceNut created one of the longest posts I've seen.  His post might be worth someone's  time to read. It's about "natural" transfers from Mars to Earth.

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 80#p112580

The topic persisted for 15 posts, through 2012.

Well, the post was reasonable, but it is disappointing there was no follow up, in light of the response from members.

The email will go out, but 15 years have gone by ...

The post seems final in it's phrasing. This person may have said all there is to say.

In 15 years, perhaps some new insight has arrived.

Before announcing today's candidate, I'd like to report that we have had a string of ** four ** email sends!  We've had that many in a row before, but we'd be breaking new ground it we find out candidate today is a real person who we'd want to invite to return.

Today's candidate is salamander Member 1544

salamander has an email with Yahoo, and the username is a person .... all good indicators

Kids4Mars, a project of the MarsDrive.com consortium, strives to be the premier children's and educator's site for Mars information and activities. Our goal is to assist in the education of the public on the merits of human and robotic space exploration with an emphasis on Mars. We feel that as children learn more about the benefits of leaving the cradle of Earth and become a true spacefaring civilization, support for space endeavors and settlement will increase.

We aim to incorporate and develop activities that are aimed at students and adults of various grade/age levels and personal and professional interests. We are emphasizing new ways to use the vast array of existing materials available from NASA, ESA, and other public sources, as well as activities and materials developed and organized by and with our partner organizations. We welcome the participation of teachers, other professionals, and other organizations with an interest in space and science education.

We are currently in need of content developers, designers and a cartoonist. If you want to assist in Mars and Space related education, please contact us via the link in the menu bar on the http://www.kids4mars.com website.

No one responded.

The web site is defunct.

Well, we've set a new record of 5 Send Emails straight!

The post above received two replies, and the topic died.

I'm not inspired to send an email to this person.  Their visit was NOT about Mars, and even though it was in Chat, it is not worth encouraging.

If anyone else wants to try contacting this person, it appears the email web site is still responding.
