WBA reached 203000 overnight ... This is the last of the 1000 post runs

The Dell laptop has been running WBA since May of 2021, and much of the time the runs have been four hours at a time, and multiple runs in a day.

it has definitely earned a break.  The only remaining duty on the agenda is an Email Outreach transmission, and that is only if the candidate qualifies.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

We don't have anything going on with the database at the moment.

You hinted you'd like to see changes to the Recruiting post.  Changes have been completed but more are possible.

Please review the changes and make additional suggestions if you are so inspired.

***
In the post just before Thanksgiving, you left (me at least) wondering how the thawing operation was going.

I experimented last year with a 25 pounder (just for the exercise) and used flotation in cold water overnight as the thawing method. That procedure turned out well. Only the innermost items tucked in the cavity had not completely thawed, and they popped into a pot to make soup.

***
Void has an interesting discussion going about geothermal power, and along the way you discovered a site in your state where a geothermal plant might make sense.  However, absolutely nothing is going to happen unless some human being decides to try to create social momentum to lead to a collective decision to make the investments of time, effort and thought that would be needed.

There is only ** ONE ** member of this forum who is going to have a direct stake in that particular project, so it is up to you to make it happen.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Potholes scan...

the forum reached 204,000 posts recently, so a scan of the most recent 1000 posts was in order...

There ** should ** have been  no posts deleted, but there might have been, so the scan will show what happened.

report:
Run completed through: 204000

Total Command Lines found: 34
Total input Lines in script: 206

  Number of ID's processed: 1001

Starting Number: 203000

Last Number of Run: 204000

Average time of Loop from Main form: 00:00:28
20 Skip Exceptions were recorded.

Admin posts; 388

The series from 203000 to 204000 contains reports about previous scans.
However, despite the clutter, three ** real ** potholes emerged:
203072
203445
203673

It should be possible to obtain a clean  scan from 204,000 to 205,000, because there are no more daily reports.
** This ** report has been edited to NOT cause a false report.

OK ... 3 for 1000 posts seems plausible ...

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

This post is about cars, but I see there is an ongoing discussion in the "Cars" topic, so I'd like to avoid disturbing the flow there.

Your recent report of automobile maintenance issues, combined with all your previous reports, made me wonder if all the costs incurred over the years might total up to an amount equivalent to a purchase of a new car and regular maintenance by the dealer.

It is natural and normal for any/all of us to buy a car that we can afford, assuming we've made the decision to own a car at all.

However, the costs of ownership are often hard (if not impossible) to foresee.

My experience over the past 17 years tells me that the decision to stick with a well made used car, that is subsequently maintained by the dealer, results in a smoothing of the expense ledger.  I was amazed to find that the current value on the open market is just about what I paid for the car (inflation adjustment not considered).

However, the ** main ** reason I decided to start this post in Housekeeping, is to toss out an idea for a business in automobile provisioning, and invite your comments.

The three major modes of automobile business operation (that I know about) are:

1) Outright purchase - that is the model many of us experience
2) Leasing - this mode is popular with businesses and high end customers
3) Rental - this is popular with businesses, and with ** many ** customers

I'm thinking here about something different ....

In the mode I am thinking about, the business would offer used cars to customers for a week or a month at a time, and would expect the cars to be returned for maintenance in return for another vehicle of comparable quality.

The quality of the vehicle would be a function of the amount of rental the customer can afford.

What I'm aiming for here is a mode of automobile provisioning that insures stability for everyone concerned.

The customer would accept swapping of vehicles weekly or monthly, as the price of stability in expense.

As is true now, the customer would be responsible for insurance, so the insurance company would need to be on board with the methodology. The customer would be responsible for fuel/recharging.

From the business side, the source of cars can be the massive pool of unsold inventory around the respective country, and the pool of flood soaked cars that come out of disaster zones every years.

It would take a talented and creative management team to handle all the details of a business like this, and it needs to be done at scale to be successful.

Last night I saw an interview with the Author of a new book about WalMart. The author has been studying WalMart for many years, and was given access to the company and it's founder(s) despite his warning that he would pull no punches.

I bring this up because a company of ** that ** size, with a reputation for quality products at the lowest possible price (at the expense of workers), might be able to pull off an automobile provisioning service such as this one.

Added a bit later ... towing from point of breakdown could be included:

Re: Housekeeping

Sure, you can get AAA for towing and liability can be gotten for short duration but what you are thinking is about car shield or insurance for catastrophic repair for the most part.

Consumer affairs warranty

Best Extended Auto Warranty Companies (Updated December 2022)

Always the question is like medical insurance has to do with is there a deductible or other copay ect or is it just a scam to get your money

Is Car Repair Insurance Worth It?

of course, it could depends on the situation.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2684

When I proposed a new business concept, you came back with a suggestion of insurance.

Insurance is definitely a possible solution to the problem of smoothing out costs of ownership of an automobile.

I think the underlying concept here is risk management.

It seems to me (at this point) that ownership of a vehicle provides quite a number of benefits, and those benefits appear to outweigh the disadvantages for a great number of folks.

What I proposed for consideration was a form of car rental that would operate successfully at the low end of the customer range.

Clearly leasing works well at the high end of the customer range.

At the high end, a customer gets a new car every three years, and the leasing agency handles all unexpected events that may occur, while the insurance policy of the customer handles accidents.

What I am thinking about is a possible way to extend that experience down to the low income customer.

Right now (as far as I can tell) the vast majority of low income folks (in the US but possibly elsewhere as well) do not have a leasing option. They can take the bus, ride a bike, walk, or own a beater, and deal with the uncertainty and difficulty that comes with that.

I visited WalMart recently, and I watched an inteview with an author whose book about WalMart just became available.

The concept I have in mind is to provide a beater for the low end customer, but for the corporation to assume all the responsibilities for maintenance.

The rental would be by the week or month.

Customer would carry accident insurance.

Corporation would carry insurance for the entire fleet.

Customer would swap the car each week or month, depending upon the plan selected.

Corporation would maintain the vehicle.

In your case (I'll take the Prius as a model) ...

You'd select a Prius as the vehicle you'd like to rent.

Corporation would provide a Prius at the price point you can afford, and you would drive it for a week (or a month, depending upon plan).

At the end of the week (or month) you would swap the vehicle at Corporation.

The vehicle you drive out would be the best the Corporation has available at the price point you have chosen.

Part of your responsibility as customer, is to notify Corporation of any problems you noticed while you drove the vehicle.

What you could expect would be reliable transportation at the price point that works for you.

For some folks, working at minimal wages, the vehicle might not look all that good, and there might be missing amenities like air conditioning.

What I'm going for here is a system that offloads the responsibility for maintenance to a corporation, while providing reliable transportation for customers.

This concept could be extended to improve the convenience for the customer.

An Uber driver could deliver the replacement vehicle each renewal period, and drive the vehicle coming off rent back to Corporation.

In that case, customer would not have to worry about driving the vehicle to Corporation and bringing the replacement home.

Corporation has the responsibility (and the opportunity) to take advantage of scale to maintain the fleet at the lowest possible cost.

Maintenance issues that ordinary customers might miss (like low oil pressure due to faulty sensor) could be caught by highly automated maintenance facilities at Corporation.

Please focus on my proposal, and try to avoid distraction by insurance.

What weekly or monthly budget would make sense to you for reliable transportation as described above.

You would have three expense categories:

1) Regular accident insurance
2) Fuel expense (hydrocarbon or electric)
3) Rental (by week or month)

Corporation would handle:

1) Delivery of vehicle to your home
2) Pick up of vehicle from your home
3) Detailed inspection of vehicle at shop
4) Any maintenance needed
5) Cleaning, washing if appropriate

The insurance company would handle dings, based upon the deductible you carry.

I think I've thought of everything, but could easily have missed something.

For SpaceNut re Webcam views of Gulf of Mexico at Naples ...

When I'm working at my development station, and NOT using online, I like to set the browser on the ASUS to watch folks frolicking on the beach at Naples.

Temperatures there are in the low 80's, and while frolicking seems a bit restrained compared to weekends, there was a couple tossing a frisbee.

Meanwhile, the forecast is for sub-freezing temperatures in the area where I live.

It had been forecast, but it was still a (small) shock to see the outside thermometer here reading 0 degrees Fahrenheit .... In follow up checks of other thermometers, located in less protected locations, the actual change of temperature overnight was on the order of 40-50 degrees.

While this region is more fortunate than most, the amount of snow is sufficient to require some time out doors to clear it.  You gave us a preview if ** that ** with your recent report of wet snow in New Hampshire.

That's a relief!  Thanks for the good news you have power back!

Without a furnace I assume ? you have electric room heaters, so I'm guessing they are glowing right now.

Re the Prius ... is there some tradeoff point where just replacing the motor is worth while?

The motor you have can then be rebuilt by someone who can make a buck from the effort.

Since you seem to enjoy working on motors, why not get a reliable car and work on motors that need repair as a hobby?

Thanks for the support of My Hacienda!

I've been putting that topic on the back burner too long!

Your suggestions for supporting specializations is welcome!

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re use of leaf blower to clear powder snow.

Last fall I invested in a battery powered leaf blower, and used it to clear much of the street.

Today I experimented with using the blower to clear the 6-8 inches of powder snow we got overnight.

The results were fair ... it was possible to clear a narrow path, but one blower appears not to be strong enough to clear a sidewalk if snow is over about 3 inches.

It worked well to clear the front porch and steps.

For Calliban re #2696

First, thank you for reporting the difficulty you've been having!

Second, thanks for reporting that a package/service called "Tor" is working for you .... I've seen the name "Tor" frequently over the past couple of weeks, as I've been researching use of proxy software to (try to) solve the problem I am having with CORS (anti-hacker policy).  The references were along the lines of someone wanting to use the service in addition to using the privoxy proxy.

Per Bing (for anyone who might not be familiar with the service) Tor is free software for enabling online anonymity and resisting censorship.

Third, for anyone who may be struggling with issues like this, please keep the Recruiting Topic in mind.  One of the four Admins checks the NewMarsMember email every day, and will be able to reply to any reports of difficulty.

Fourth, thanks for providing Tor as a possible solution if anyone ** is ** encountering issues with connection to NewMars.

Re: Housekeeping

As a follow up to the report of Bad CRSF token (by Calliban) I followed a link to techletterbox.com, where someone has collected examples of the forgery.

Not for the first time, I'm wondering if NewMars should upgrade to https from the current http.

I'm open to discussion by members, as I'm sure SpaceNut, kbd512 and RobertDyck would ....

The http service we are using is a convenience for those of us who are using older computers, but it might turn out that very few of us are still using such equipment. As it happens, my main work station was state-of-the-art in 2000, and it works well for NewMars, but otherwise is unable to access most web sites.

As it happens, the sites that I used each day still accept http connections, but there are very few such sites on the Internet these days.

Re: Housekeeping

Today was a sunny day while still being quite chilly as the temperature inside dropped while we were away travelling to see the son up north for Christmas. The Subaru got a good test for the cooling system as it would labor harder with hill climbs that I did see elevate but as soon as I left off on the gas it would drop back down to normal. That means higher rpm's are pressurizing the heads which cause more hot gasses from the exhaust to leak into the coolant.
Now to see what is at fault for the check engine o2 codes and evaporation emission and it should be good for a while. Was pleased to see that just 1 tank did the job for up and back which was not the case for the escape in the past. The prius did that as well before it got issues recently.
If I had a garage, I could tear into it to see what I can find but it's way too cold to do so in the yard.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2699

Thanks for good news of your successful drive "up North" and safe return, with only one tank of gas!

Regarding your line about what the coolant warming might mean .... Your interpretation seems overly pessimistic. My interpretation is that when an engine is working harder, it produces more thermal energy, which would transfer to the coolant, and from there to the radiator, and from there to the air, which was cold.

My deduction is that the system is working correctly, but I admit I've never paid attention to the temperature of the engine coolant.
