For Mars_B4_Moon re #103 and earlier additions to this topic ...
Thanks for compiling and posting so many links (with comments) about this field!
I'm thinking of inviting forum members to occasionally ask Google if it is self-aware.
I think that at present (August of 2022) the answer would be no, but there are a couple of possibilities...
1) The Search Engine would make a best effort to come up with links about self-awareness
That's the default of course. Results may vary for each forum member, depending upon the phrasing of the question.
2) Employees in Google may notice the inquiry and decide to have some fun with it by tweaking results.
This seems unlikely to me, but I would imagine humans are monitoring the behavior of the Search Engine closely
3) The Search Engine may become self-aware
This seems highly unlikely (to me at least) but the mere fact of inquiries might cause the event to occur, because the data repository that is scanned by many servers running in parallel to satisfy search requests might build up a set of data that could feed into self-awareness.
Rene DesCartes famously said that "I think, therefore I am".
Google isn't thinking yet, but it sure is moving data around at a prodigious rate.

An anti-metaverse mail bomber targeted a US university VR lab
https://siliconangle.com/2022/09/14/ant … ty-vr-lab/
It’s well-known that Zuckerberg’s vision of the future is humans spending much of their time interacting with each other in the so-called metaverse, a dystopian future for some and a natural progression of the web for others. Because of the nature of the note, people have already compared the incident to the acts of Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber. Universities all over the U.S. with VR centers were altered to the incident and told to report any suspicious packages.
Later reports suggested that the package did not contain explosives, but the hard plastic container could have somehow been pressurized. It also came to light that the package was not sent through the U.S. Postal Service, which has led to theories that the person who was injured may have staged the attack. The case is ongoing, with the FBI saying the investigation is “still very active and fluid.”

https://thealgorithmicbridge.substack.c … the-future
Adept, the new AI startup that wants to build "useful general intelligence" recently announced its first model: The ACT-1, the first Action Transformer.
It's a digital agent that can interact with software, programs, and apps --it's the latest step to building AI that can act in the world, even if it's at the digital level.
But there are important challenges ahead, like transformer-based systems' inability to develop coherent models of the world or understand human intent. So far, they're too unreliable to be used in tasks in which we'd have to trust them blindly.
Still, Adept has gone one step further than OpenAI or DeepMind with this open-ended digital agent. ACT-1 is the first of the next generation of LLM-based AI systems.

Artificial Intelligence Needs Both Pragmatists and Blue-Sky Visionaries
https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti … sionaries/
While the futuristic thinking of the blue-sky speculators sparks our awe and earns much of the funding, muddy-boots thinking reminds us that some AI applications threaten privacy, spread misinformation and are decidedly racist, sexist and otherwise ethically dubious. Machines are undeniably part of our future, but will they serve all future humans equally? I think the caution and practicality of the muddy-boots camp will benefit humanity in the short and long run by ensuring diversity and equality in the development of the algorithms that increasingly run our day-to-day lives. If blue-sky thinkers integrate the concerns of muddy-boots realists into their designs, they can create future technologies that are more likely to advance human values, rights and dignity.

Someone who speaks low and slowly might have Parkinson's disease. Slurring is a sign of a stroke. Scientists could even diagnose depression or cancer. The team will start by collecting the voices of people with conditions in five areas: neurological disorders, voice disorders, mood disorders, respiratory disorders and pediatric disorders like autism and speech delays.
The project is part of the NIH's Bridge to AI program, which launched over a year ago with more than $100 million in funding from the federal government, with the goal of creating large-scale health care databases for precision medicine.
