Re: Selecting Peace - Abandoning Warfare

Scott, the example of the Hutterites you mention is really amusing.  Fundamentalist Christians who have a noted distain for birth control.  No one BUT a people with strong moral values can settle Mars. The Hutterites know that a stable society is based on the family unit, a growing population, and separation of church and state. I hope that my fellow colonists have a higher moral authority than the state structure that you espouse.

Frankly, I agree.

Now, how do we persuade such people to try?

Well, I guess the next best thing are the Mormons.  They have the same values and the highest percentage of graduate degree holders out of all religions.

I suspect they have more money; 5 or 6 US Senators; Steve Young and Donny Osmond, right?

The Mormons could afford going to Mars if they got persecuted enough.  They'd want to build their own rockets, though.  Free labor, can't beat that!  I think the Marriott owner is one, too.  Oh, and me! smile

Re: Selecting Peace - Abandoning Warfare

Mr.Beach, once again you miss a major player, Earth. Even if you were able to prevent an inter-Martian War you could not prevent Earth or a nation on Earth from attacking Mars because violence is already too deeply engrained into Terran society to end soon and for some reason or other a Terran nation or Terra itself would invade Mars
