Everything looks reasonable so far...
Posting in:  Interplanetary transportation » Large scale colonization ship

Greetings, I have just joined Rob, The New Mars Form, appreciations, great discussions. . .

This person appears to have been invited to join.  The reception by members was welcoming.  In particular, RobertDyck produced a summary of Large Ship that was good enough to earn a Search Term award.

For whatever reason, nothing further happened.

I'll let the email from SpaceNut do it's thing.  Perhaps Mr. Nilsson will respond.

a.Chemical rockets
b.Ionic engines
c.Fission power
d.EM propulsion (rail guns)

Type I
? this civilization harnesses the energy output of an entire planet.
a.Ram-jet fusion engines
b.Photonic drive

Type II
? this civilization harnesses the energy output of a star, and generates about 10 billion times the energy output of a Type I civilization.
a.Antimatter drive
b.Von Neumann nano probes

Type III

A manned to Mars is absolutely necessary to further our civilization. Just as the misson to the Moon was in its day. We need to put our selfishness and egocentricy aside and focus on our future.

Perhaps this is a tangent to the thread, but how about developing an incentive program that encourages a creative way of getting funding for Mars, as opposed to what would be entitled to whom after we've arrived? Instead of developing a 'carrot on an interplanetary stick' incentive scheme, there exists some forum to oversee the development of a profitable ensemble of Earth-based gov't/industry sources to fund the first missions. THEN worry about who gets what when people buy into the fact that it can be done, and that the technology has been developed to do it more.

I'm doing research on this at the moment, and curious as to your thoughts on the subject...

Zach.

The topic itself continued to #48 in 2003, and there was a brief flurry in 2005.

While 20 years have gone by, Vooderbar may have continued the research mentioned in the post, or gone in different directions entirely.

I'll send the invitation.

For SpaceNut re #30

Thanks for noting the 1969 date ...I ** think ** that is left over from the first forum software.

It may have been a default date stored by the old software when it did not have a current date to store.

Thanks for confirming you received yesterday's email!  Every day we receive our confirmation emails means FluxBB has been behaving itself, and the email to the candidate ** may ** have gone out.

Some of the email destinations are twenty years old, and they may have long since been dropped, but I still think it is worth going through the exercise.

I'm glad you arranged things so we are dealing with our one post candidates first.  These are least likely to be interested in coming back, but on the other hand, they may have a lot to offer if they do.

Today's candidate is: vjv_2k4

Looking at that username, I don't have high hopes.

Let's see what that person shows in the record ...

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

The next candidate is virginiagreen

Wow! A spammer of the first degree!

The IP was from Kyiv in Ukraine ...

Just for the heck of it, I'm going to see what was in the one post:

virginiagreen wrote:

Index» Pictures of Mars» Pictures of Saturn»

This was a spammer who made a personal effort ... the post is reasonably close to the topic, and the Signature line is:

In Musk we trust! There are a lot of benefits from his SpaceX company

However, the Signature line is a link to something ...

Charming .... a hawker of casinos ....

This is a candidate for conversion.

For SpaceNut .... that's it for today... two candidates and two disappointments ... tomorrow will be another opportunity.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

Today's candidate is victoria1963

The email address seems "seems" to indicate association with:

International Space Agency

This ** could ** be a single individual with a web site.

However, whois reports: www.isa-hq.com

Interesting ... the web site is still responding ... it says: Founded 1986  - Incorporated 1990

Registered Trademark & Copyrights 1986-2019

New York State Non-Profit corporation

Mailing address maha Nebraska

The web site has a disclaimer/warning about apparent conflict with someone.

Despite that, the web site goes on for page after page ...

About half way down the web site shows a Mars related section ... International Mars Exploration

I've seen enough ... Just for fun, I'll send SpaceNut's email to this person.

It seems (to me at least) ** highly ** unlikely we'll hear back, but we might.

But Permafrost could be a problem, as it loses its strength, when it gets warm, as it will, because the isulation of the habitat can't be that strong.

Cheers

This was post 50 of a topic that went on for four pages ...

The candidate seems to think there is permafrost n Mars, but he is responding to someone else who seems to think there might be permafrost on Mars.

There is a mis-spelled word that gives me pause ... I can't tell if the person is thinking of insulation or isolation or perhaps insolation.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re today's send procedure ....

The system (and by that I'm including hardware, software, Internet) really had me on the ropes today.  The script that has been using for email stopped working today.  The ever reliable Enter key function that I've depended upon from the beginning stopped working.  I have no idea what has changed to cause this vital set of bits to fail to cause the browser to perform submit from the Address Bar.  I tried both browsers and the failure is the same.

It took a couple of hours to replace all the Enters in the Email script with mouse clicks.

I ** think ** the send went out.

I'm not looking forward to having to do the same for the Potholes script, which is larger.

I'm grateful the post repair is completed.

Update later that same day .... After a rest, the Dell behaved normally.  The Enter key is working again.

That was a really strange failure.  It seemed to apply ** only ** to the Enter command, which is a software substitute for the physical keyboard enter key.  Everything else seemed to work normally, which would imply (to me at least) that this was NOT a hardware issue.

I hope it does not return, but powering down completely seems to correct it.

The web site in the email name is for a multi-national food producer.

Google has a long list of citations for the company, including one that claims the web site is kid safe ... emphasis seems to be nutrition and give-away programs.

I can easily imagine the marketing department looking at the then new Internet (ca 2002) to see if outreach there might be useful.

Tobin wrote:

I think this has some merit. There is the obvious issue that as the rocket exhaust expands down the nozzle it cools and expands. The ablation will decrease markedly. As with a hybrid rocket the ablation is very sensitive to both.
Also you would add mass to the nozzle that would to a small degree affect its responsiveness and power required to steer the rocket.
But with a 3d printer it should be quite easy to produce a design that is in effect a light weight foam with less density as you go down the nozzle. This should ablate in the desired way and shouldn't add much mass. It would add some mass, and would reduce initial exhaust velocity and temperature; but extra mass should increase low altitude thrust which is desirable. The benefits of a low cost altitude adjusting nozzle is not insignificant.

Tobin's post was #11 in a series that included posts by GW Johnson about nozzle design

For whatever reason, Tobin never returned.  I'll let the Dell send an email.  2019 is fairly recent.

All good ... let's explore further ...

A C# programmer!  Who'dAThunk! ????

I had the same issue with the java terraforming calculator running on newer versions of java. So I decided to rewrite it in Visual C#. You can download it from my homepage if you want to try it.

This gent will ** definitely ** receive an email.

In addition, I'll follow the link to his projects page.

I have an unfinished Space Elevator calculator program I'd ** really ** like to invite someone else to refactor!

If the program ended up in C# all the better.  It is designed to work with existing off-the-shelf Kevlar thread, in the form of chains instead of the traditional thousand kilometer long cables.

18 years have passed ... let's see what this candidate contributed in 2004

Topic: Index» Interplanetary transportation» pop up mars ships with 20-100 ton masses - spacecraft for mars mission

The person started a topic and (presumably) watched it run through #8), but then took no further action ...

Let's look at the opening post of the topic:

tmayes wrote:

1. Lets build a pop up mars ship that is launched
into earth orbit as the third stage of a chemical propelled
heavy lift vehicle. The mars ship will begin its journey
from earth orbit. It will use a solar sail, pr a solar electric
ion or plasma drive, or a nuclear electric ion or plasma
drive to carry from 2-7 people to another planet like
mars from orbit.

I'm really doubtful of potential value here, based upon this inauspicious opening.

However! 18 years ** has ** passed ...

I'll send the email.
