Re: To be hacked it seems that it does not matter

Having been on the end of a credit-reporting companies that was hacked and now finding out that they contaminate each other's every 30 days it's little wonder that they offer free credit guards that do nothing but cause more issues.  Then add in all of the identity theft and little has changed with the huge amount of data that they are in control of. Equifax issued wrong credit scores for "millions" of customers

Smart device warning: Homes 'exposed' to more than 12,000 attacks per week
https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/16404 … er-attacks

Maybe there was hacking before 4Chan or anonymous groups, phone jamming and call scamming.

Phreaking is a slang term coined to describe the activity of a culture of people who study, experiment with, or explore telecommunication systems, such as equipment and systems connected to public telephone networks. The term phreak is a sensational spelling of the word freak with the ph- from phone, and may also refer to the use of various audio frequencies to manipulate a phone system. Phreak, phreaker, or phone phreak are names used for and by individuals who participate in phreaking. The 1984 AT&T breakup gave rise to many small companies intent upon competing in the long-distance market. These included the then-fledgling Sprint and MCI, both of whom had only recently entered the marketplace. At the time, there was no way to switch a phone line to have calls automatically carried by non-AT&T companies. Customers of these small long-distance operations would be required to dial a local access number, enter their calling card number, and finally enter the area code and phone number they wish to call. Because of the relatively lengthy process for customers to complete a call, the companies kept the calling card numbers short – usually 6 or 7 digits. This opened up a huge vulnerability to phone phreaks with a computer. If a human had good pitch and could mimic or sing the tones they could hijack phones the old Rotary Phone could be manipulated into Ringing free of charge. Old telephone hackers usually appropriated unused tape mail boxes that were part of business or cellular phone systems. Once a vulnerable mailbox system is discovered, word would spread around the old school phreak community, and scores of them would take residence on the answering machine system. They use these systems as a "home base" for communication within the phreak hacker community, chatting with one another until the rightful owners would discover the intrusion and wipe them off.

Two names have popped up in recent times to describe hackers, the 'White Hat' that say they just expose scammers or leak out corruption and help people by exposing crimes, the 'Black Hat' mercenaries for hire, they will hack for payments?

Researcher Hacks Starlink Terminal to Warn SpaceX of Flaws

Starlink Got Hacked And SpaceX's Response Was Incredible

https://www.slashgear.com/963370/starli … ncredible/

SpaceX congratulated Wouters on this achievement, but also made sure to point out that this kind of hack is low-impact for the network and its users. "We aim to give each part of the system the minimal set of privileges required to get its job done," said SpaceX, affirming that one piece of compromised equipment should not affect the entire network. With that said, SpaceX also notes that it's hard to protect a device to which a hacker has constant unmonitored physical access — so the bug hunting continues.

Researcher Hacks Starlink Terminal to Warn SpaceX of Dangerous Flaws

https://gizmodo.com/hacker-starlink-spa … 1849396899

Lennert Wouters has apparently made the details of his hacking tool open source.

Wouters has previously warned SpaceX of flaws in their system. SpaceX did respond by updating the system, but Wouters argues that the only sure way to avoid this attack is to create a new version of the main chip, Wired reported.

The term's origin is often attributed to hacker culture theorist Richard Stallman (though he denies coining it) to contrast the exploitative hacker with the white hat hacker who hacks protectively by drawing attention to vulnerabilities in computer systems that require repair.  The black/white hat terminology originates in the Western genre of popular American culture, in which black and white hats denote villainous and heroic cowboys respectively, to resemble the contrast of good and evil.

Black hat hackers are the stereotypical illegal hacking groups often portrayed in popular culture, and are "the epitome of all that the public fears in a computer criminal". Black hat hackers break into secure networks and systems with the motive of destroying, modifying, or stealing some sensitive data, or to make the networks unusable for authorized network users.

Re: To be hacked it seems that it does not matter

Another article on approximately 120,000 US taxpayers may have had their details leaked by the IRS

Not even a hack just bad coding...

sure dollar late but

August 2022, US President Joe Biden signed off an additional $80 billion of funding for the IRS, part of which was earmarked to help overhaul its IT systems and to hire experienced new technology specialists.

sort of a shrug of the shoulders as to this being an issue since so many others have similar problems

IRS that has leaked data in recent months, it seems all types of organizations, big and small are vulnerable to data leaks.

The data of over 2.5 million individuals who have taken out student loans with either the Oklahoma Student Loan Authority (OSLA) or EdFinancial has been exposed in a data breach as a result of a third-party IT provider becoming compromised.
