Reviving an Old Tradition

In order to keep track of forum activity, I used to post the number of topics, users, and posts on the first of each month.  I'm going to do that again.

As of today, February 2, 2015 at 14:30 EST:

Total number of registered users: 44,706
Total number of topics: 5,926
Total number of posts: 121,945

Note that that includes this post.

We're about to hit the magic number of 123,456 posts once again XD.  1511 posts to go, so perhaps a couple months?

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

The Wayback Machine's last archive of the Newmars homepage was on December 18, 2014.  On that day it recorded the following information:

Total number of registered users: 25,461
Total number of topics: 5,835
Total number of posts: 120,098

In the intervening 46 days we have had 1,848 posts (including this one).  This is 40.2 posts per day.  We've also seen the creation of just under 100 topics and about 20,000 newly registered users.

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

I believe not as the old forum had alot of dead wood and spammers lurking for there respective chance to wreek havoc....

As for individual post to the forum, I was in the top 5 as I recall with nearly 10,000 posts for a late comer to the forum in those days as it had already been active in other formats well be for 2001'ish...

Another tradition was to generate a summary of the topic back in the early days...which was a link on the home page on the most active topics.

I could only imagine not-- But in order to get the right to post new users have to physically (so to speak) send an email to JoshCryer.  This is de facto a turing test.

I heard Google's developing a CATCHPA that only tests you if there's something odd with your mouse clicking.  I'd like to get one of those.

SpaceNut-

Naturally I'm even more of a neophyte than you, but there was a lot to be said for the old board.  I'm sure JBurk would be open to reviving some of those traditions

That's obviously impossible because 16 Psyche is on the totally opposite side of the Sun right now, Duh

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

Free Chat (now Not So Free Chat) had a thread for misc stuff. What are we doing lately. This weekend I gave a talk at a local science fiction convention. Would like to elaborate further. Where do I post that?

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

Sounds to me that you have picked the right place to post the topic of "local science fiction convention" in the Free chat (now Not So Free Chat) forum. I would join in at least for a few posts....

The new joinies are still flocking into the data base of users at about the same rate as previously meantioned...  and yet I seem to be the only one here.....

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

I just did a look to see how many new members have joined but have not posted a word to any topics.
Since 3-15-2015 there is a total of 19 pages at 50 newly registered members and at the 90 day mark there is 175 pages which means from page 176 to 197 these accounts should be removed to keep any attempt to crash the site or to corrupt the data base chances to a bit lower value.....

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

Well today is 6-1-17 and the benchmark of new topics and members continues to grow....

Total number of registered users: 2,134
Total number of topics: 6,438
Total number of posts: 136,924

I see that the numbers of members are lower since removing the non posters from the ranks of the numbers.

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

Here is another forum factoid as reviewed and counted in that we have 20 plus pages of 50 registered members that for the most part have zero posts to the forum since the beginning of the year when we wiped out a large number of the non posters from the user list.

Total number of registered users: 2,211
Total number of topics: 6,442
Total number of posts: 137,125

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

Hi SpaceNut,

I'll spend some time this weekend cleaning out the non-posted users.  Just FYI, there are a bunch of security checks in place to ensure these non-posters can't do anything bad to the site.  Tweaking all the settings & technology to ensure that only real people that intend to contribute and not to spam is an ongoing effort...

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

some data since closing off the forum to spammers has been a steady topic daily posting count from members near a dozen each day.
Other notables is that via invitation we have introduced at least 3 new members.
todays users count that as viewing the forum and other details

Guests online: 50
Total number of registered users: 19,633
Total number of topics: 7,567
Total number of posts: 175,455

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

From my experience those 175,455 posts are as good a guide to the issues relating to Mars colonisation as you will find anywhere, given their breadth and detail.

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

The last registered user has finally changed to an ID that we have recovered and the number of guests are now 40 ish most days as they try (suspect spammer) to get into the forum....
There is a mismatch on topics (Total number of topics: 7,582) and the topic counter (id currently is above 9,884) used to hold them in the database so hopefully we will not have any issues....

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

The 12 topic areas containing post are good to see.
There are 43 fresh posts to discussions from old subjects to new ones.
I am grateful that we are on this new comeback trail for not only NewMars but for Mars Society as well.

Re: Reviving an Old Tradition

For SpaceNut ... just curious ... is Mars Society using Google activity tracking?

They may not be including NewMars if they are.  If you're not familiar with what Google activity reports look like, I can upload some samples from another web site where we set it up.

It can tell you a bit about where "guests" are coming from.
