NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.
With this post and going forward, we (Admins) will offer a new policy for use of our Zoom account. Instead of offering a fixed weekly Zoom opportunity, we will invite members to request Zoom meetings. The time and participants can be worked out to suit everyone. This is another opportunity for us to thank Executive Director James Burk for providing this professional account, and for helping us through the learning curve.
Our newest member is "BeerMan". Admins will be trying to improve the flow of Registration. If there are others thinking of applying for membership, please send an email. At the moment, we have decided to create a temporary password and send it to the new member candidate, so we eliminate the uncertainty of the automated email process. We still need the automated email to work so the new member can choose a password.
The forum is open to application by persons who may be interested in the Interstate 80 Pacific Ocean pipeline.
This forum is open to application by persons who may be interested in manufacture of synthetic fuel using solar power in Texas.
This forum is open to application by persons who may be interested in manufacture of synthetic fuel using nuclear power not in Texas.
Please note that membership in the Mars Society is proposed for admission. The Mars Society bears the cost of the computer services and related services that support the NewMars forum.
I am looking for new members who are blessed with enough time and energy to participate for some time into the future.
Such folk must be ** out there ** !! We'd be glad to have you!
We are also happy to welcome former members back into the active community. It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned". In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access. You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below. Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply. SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.
GW Johnson has extended an invitation to readers of his ExRocketman blog, to visit NewMars. If anyone is interested in opening an account, just drop a note to the portal.
GW Johnson gave a presentation to the North Houston NSS on April 9th. This was a follow up to the Large Ship presentation given by RobertDyck on March 12th. Both presentations are available for viewing from northhoustonspace.org.

There are nearly 8 billion people on Earth these days, and several billion have access to the Internet. This forum is accessible to ** every ** Earth citizen with Internet access. We ** know ** the site is of interest to spammers! Hopefully it is of interest to others who want to use their time more productively.

We have 11,199 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through 18,344 are waiting for finishing touches. We have run out of Usernames that may be eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members. We are halfway through a campaign to repair posts that contain artifacts that prevent proper display. Scan of 77,000 posts out of 77,000 were completed and the end point was found. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in place. Code to perform updates is finished and tested.
Approval to proceed IS granted, the project will resume in December, 2021.
Equipment to be used for the update series was tested and found ready to begin work on December 1st. The process will last through July of 2022 and well into August. Current date in repair is 2005/03. These posts have been updated : 1-66600
A quality assurance run is underway, to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified post is: 66600
We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.
The author of a concept for a 17 person expedition to Mars has specifically requested participation by peers to help.
A proposal for an 8 member expedition is in review.
RobertDyck could use assistance of all kinds in development of the Large Ship proposal. There are three animation/drawing systems in play.
Fusion 360 is a version of commercial software by AutoDesk that is available for student non-commercial use. It requires a beefy computer.
Blender is a free animation package that includes drawing capability.
The Large Ship project may stimulate spinoff activities, such as a 3D Virtual Experience. Volunteers are needed. See Recruiting for details.
Large Ship has split into two versions. The original is a single rotating passenger vessel. The competitor is a counter rotating design.
Large Ship has also spawned a new topic dedicated to design and construction of an on-Earth Analog facility for living human beings.
Large Ship has also spawned a new topic dedicated to engineering design and construction on Earth of a flight ready prototype.
Large Ship has also spawned a topic dedicated to design and deployment of a Gravity Remediation facility for space travelers.
The My Hacienda topic is in need of 7,800 individuals to populate a virtual community to simulate self-sustainability on Mars
The subject of abundant energy supply for the population of Earth (and Mars in due time) is under discussion in the Nuclear Power is Safe topic. It seems reasonable (to me at least) to suppose all fossil fuel power stations can be replaced with modular nuclear fission packages quite rapidly if the people of Earth decide that is a good idea. It appears the leadership of China thinks that is a good idea for their nation.
A book was recommended for discussion: Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy by Olah, Goeppert and Prakash
Abundant energy from modular fission reactors is continuing to receive attention.
A book was recommended for discussion: "Plentiful Energy" (about fission reactors).
Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership. Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.
For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address. If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to this email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.
For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects. We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions. We don't need more folks in that specialty. We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

These posts have been updated : 1-68100
A quality assurance run is underway, to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified post is: 68100
We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

For SpaceNut re #681
Thanks for noting the daily recruiting / membership post .... We've brought in six folks since starting this new regime, and none are active.
This is a good time to remind you we've talking about sending email to former members. So far you've chosen to hold off. When you do get around to considering it, please note that it will take some time to develop the script to perform that activity. However, the current campaign will wind down in August, so the equipment will be available.
The opening sequence is to send an email invitation to you, with text you provide.
The email send feature seems to work. It is the email-password-change feature that is no working. The work-around is for an admin to provide a temporary password to a member, inform them by email (not using FluxBB) and then the member can change their own password after logging in.
We are set up to put new members to work.... there are 7800 plots to be set in motion, in addition to everything else that members have started and not finished.
We have a 5000 ton space vessel in hiatus/dry dock .... it could pick up momentum at any time. I like the Unitary Rotation idea and want to see it realized.
We have a counter-rotating concept in unfinished status. I'd ** really ** like to see that idea developed. We have an opportunity coming up at the 25th Anniversary Conference in October, but the concept has to be developed into a full presentation with abstract, paper, slides and notes.
OF 1939 started work on his concept for an 18 person expedition but seems to have run out of steam. I'd like to see that concept developed to the point that 18 people are dedicating their education and career development to take part.
That's all I can think of at the moment, but the members of this group have generated ** plenty ** of ideas over the years. Not much (that I can see) has happened, but the future beckons.
Heck, even you (Sir SpaceNut) have an important opportunity to help to develop water purification capability for every aspect of the Mars venture. We need pure potable water on ** all ** the ship designs, as well as for habitats and manned rovers.
The needed capability ** does NOT ** exist on Earth today, so the opportunity beckons.

As a mod are you able to see the email for the username?
If not, I can create a file to send you; that contains them.
This might work for a form letter content:
I am trying to reach out again for you; a past Member of NewMars a Mars Society Forum.
Like many others we make aspirational statements and claims for what we would like to see and how we can be part of that. Yet our resources are not up to the task at this point. All space groups suffer from the same problem. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we are trying to build here an organization you can believe in. An organization that will (eventually) reaches all of its goals.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it has been locked to prevent hacker access.

For SpaceNut re #683
Thanks for picking up on this opportunity!
A mod can see the emails. The program we are using for the Post Repair was also used for the Spammer ID recovery.
In that role, it had to replace the spammer email with a TestiD replacement email.
In the script for the email outreach, the program can work with a file of ID's you might create, or it can work with a set of emails, or it can work with dates or status.
For example, if you wanted to reach out to former members who had posted at least once, and who had other characteristics you might define, the script can collect those candidates for the outreach.
The outreach would then consist of:
1) Select email button for the candidate
2) Upload the text to be sent
3) Issue the Send command
Because FluxBB seems to be at risk of failure in the email service, I would propose a significant wait between email send requests. There is no hurry. We might consider a wait of a full minute between email send requests, or even more if necessary.
Thanks for the sample text! I've notched this request for later today.
Right now, I'm starting today's Trailbreaker.

For SpaceNut re Outreach campaign, and specifically #686 ...
Thanks for that excellent backup option! The first choice would be to let FluxBB handle the job. It is running on a Mars Society server, and any problems that might occur will be recorded there in the log files. The fact that we have not yet learned how to work with the log files is beside the point. I asked Google for help, and learned that there are a great number of commercial and free products designed to help in dealing with huge files that are too large to fit in memory.
For that matter, it is quite reasonable to code up a simple utility to look at a huge file a record at a time. We don't need speed. We just need the ability to find a particular record created at a particular time on a particular day, with specific characteristics.

For your planning ...
An option for your consideration is to compose a query that will generate the candidates you want to contact, and send me the query.
I can run the query, harvest the ID's, and feed those into the script process. That is a well proven way to proceed.
You can experiment with queries until you find one that you like. There is no hurry. I'll start work on a script to send email. By the time I'm ready, you'll have had plenty of time to find a query you like.

I ran a few experiments this morning using NewMarsMember....
It appears NewMarsMember can send email, with just the user name to work with.
This initiative is very similar to the ID recovery we did last year.
If you can provide a query that delivers the User Names you want contacted, it appears NewMarsMember can send the email.

Recruiting High Value members for NewMars.com/forums, in association with the Mars Society

NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.
With this post and going forward, we (Admins) will offer a new policy for use of our Zoom account. Instead of offering a fixed weekly Zoom opportunity, we invite members to request Zoom meetings.
We have confirmed the new member can choose a password using the non-email password change feature.

These posts have been updated : 1-69300
A quality assurance run is underway, to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified post is: 69300
We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

These posts have been updated : 1-70500
A quality assurance run is underway, to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified post is: 70500
We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

We have confirmed the new member can choose a password using the non-email password change feature.

Recruiting High Value members for NewMars.com/forums, in association with the Mars Society
Offline
NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.
With this post and going forward, we (Admins) will offer a new policy for use of our Zoom account. Instead of offering a fixed weekly Zoom opportunity, we invite members to request Zoom meetings.
We have confirmed the new member can choose a password using the non-email password change feature.

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership. Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.

These posts have been updated : 1-71700 <= resume on 30
A quality assurance run is underway, to find any posts missed during the first pass. Current verified post is: 71700 <= resume on 30
We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.
