I'm going to re-post this free chat area, rather than mars main human missions forum

Feel like this discussion could be part of Civilization, Politics, Economy and Culture...I didn't notice it was in the Humanity space missions section.

We do seem to have a lot of baggage to get rid of as a human species of the world for sure and one can only hope that wisdom will prevail in the long run.

An invasion of Ukraine, politics expands to the ISS. If Putin had a town on Mars would he order his people to start warmongering?

Kremlin says good riddance to U.K.’s Boris Johnson
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/20 … s-johnson/
Moscow smacked Boris Johnson on his way out the door as the U.K. prime minister signaled plans to step down after a tenure marked by a staunch defense of Ukraine but many scandals at home. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Mr. Johnson “really does not like us — and we [do not like] him either,” according to the BBC. Mr. Peskov called for “more professional people” to take over at 10 Downing Street. “But at the moment there is little hope for that,” Mr. Peskov said.

Antarctica Residents Reveal Psychological Toll Mars Colonists Will Face
https://www.inverse.com/article/51695-a … -isolation
video inside

At the Concordia research base in Antartica, winter is a trying time that tests the mettle of even the most seasoned explorers. It’s bleak, dark, and miserable — exactly how it’ll be on Mars for future humans who decide to venture there. And that’s why administrators at the European Space Agency, who call Concordia “the remotest base on Earth,” recently funded research on the mental health of the people who live there. They can handle the bewildering emptiness, but doing so comes at a cost.

The Right (Mental) Stuff: NASA Astronaut Psychology Revealed

https://www.space.com/26799-nasa-astron … ation.html

The psychological selection process consists of two parts. The first round involves an initial set of interviews. In the second round, the applicants are assessed based on their suitability for the job, and interviews are conducted with a psychiatrist to determine any grounds for disqualification. The applicants also participate in field exercises at the Johnson Space Center to simulate some of the challenges of being in space. (Slack said she couldn't describe the specific exercises, for security reasons.)

The qualities NASA looks for in prospective astronauts are "pretty much what you'd expect from any individuals whose job it is to work very closely in very risky environments, and isolated environments," said Jamie Barrett, another psychologist at Wyle on the astronaut selection panel.

This means a person who would make a "good neighbor" — someone who's easygoing and has good social skills, Barrett told Live Science. A good candidate is also very resilient, she added.

Grounds for disqualification

The panel will disqualify astronaut applicants for a variety of psychological reasons. "We're looking for things that are clinically psychologically wrong with them," Barrett said.

In space, "they're away from their families. They're away from their friends. They [can't feel] the sun or the breeze," she said. So existing psychiatric disorders will probably disqualify them. Marital problems can also make disqualification more likely, but disqualified applicants can always reapply, she said.

Barrett couldn't speak freely about whether the selection process involves giving the applicants stress tests or putting them in challenging situations, but she acknowledged that doing these kinds of activities "would probably be a useful thing to do."

NASA: no notification by Russia to end ISS participation

https://spacenews.com/nasa-no-notificat … icipation/

NASA officials said July 26 they have received no official notification from Roscosmos of plans to end cooperation on the International Space Station despite comments from that agency’s new leader.

Russian media reported that Yuri Borisov, who took over as director general of Roscosmos July 15, told Russian president Vladimir Putin that the agency had decided to end cooperation on the ISS after 2024.

Latest reports say the decision is made to end participation in the ISS,  starting in 2024,  whatever that really means.  They have since clarified that they will fulfill their obligations to the ISS through 2028.

Re: The Difficult Ones

If ISS can have the equipment and experiments removed for decommissioning prior to 2028 using a Starship, then the old station should be de-orbited and replaced with a new private station.  ISS contains 935m^3 of pressurized volume.  Each Starship contains 1,000m^3 to 1,100m^3 of pressurized volume.  Therefore, a specialized variant of Starship could be an ISS replacement, with more usable internal volume.  If the propellant tanks could also be transformed into pressurized volume, on-orbit, or at least pressurized cargo strorage like BEAM, then it would have at least several times the usable volume of ISS.  We would build "Lunar Orbital Gateway" and "Mars Orbital Gateway" space stations the same way.  All of the space station and lander hardware would be similarly constructed, in order to reduce costs and complexity.

The new stations would use CAMRAS and IWP for life support and be capable of housing larger crews than ISS.  If Starship becomes the new space capsule and service vehicle, then a dozen astronauts would be ferried per flight, propellants would still be legacy NTO/MMH because Draco and SuperDraco thrusters are readily available, being 3D-printed parts.  The main engines would be removed and repurposed as flight-proven spare engines for landers or space tugs, but kept on-orbit as on-hand spares.  The same microgravity environment would be maintained, the ROSA solar panels from ISS would be deployed by the new station to supply power.  The space station at Mars would have more panels to supply equivalent power, meaning 8 arrays instead of the 4 used by the new ISS and new Lunar Orbital Gateway.

A South Carolina couple has been arrested in connection with a grisly cold-case murder of a 19-year-old college student, whose body was found in a culvert in rural Kansas in 2010. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday announced the arrests of Kristopher Valadez and Candace Valadez, both 32, in Simpsonville, South Carolina, in the killing of German Clerici. According to the law enforcement agency, in early February 2010, Clerici’s mother reported the college student missing after not hearing from him in several days.

Types of Psychological Testing
https://web.archive.org/web/20150225042 … al-testing

Psychological testing — also called psychological assessment — is the foundation of how psychologists better understand a person and their behavior. It is a process of problem solving for many professionals — to try and determine the core components of a person’s psychological or mental health problems, personality, IQ, or some other component. It is also a process that helps identifies not just weaknesses of a person, but also their strengths.

Psychological testing measures an individual’s performance at a specific point in time — right now. Psychologists talk about a person’s “present functioning” in terms of their test data. Therefore psychological tests can’t predict future or innate potential.

If there is Information Warfare what blunt facts would they keep from you?

Parts of Asia might never get along, there might always be a South Korea vs Japan vs Vietnam vs China, some that share 'culture' might one day be closer but it is possible some rivals will be forever that way.Satellites can broadcast propaganda, Kwangmyongsong program were a class of experimental satellites developed by North Korea. The name "bright star", "brilliant star" or "constellation" in Korean the Communist party of North Korea says it is a poem written by Kim Il-sung.  In Europe and Russia, we have seen journalists and diplomats kicked out, the fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group from within.

Mission Shakti, after the USA said that it was tracking 270 pieces of debris from the test,  Jim Bridenstine, the head of NASA at the time, called the Indian ASAT test a "terrible thing", pointing out that debris from the explosion endangers other satellites and the International Space Station (ISS). The Diplomat once had Headquarters at Tokyo, Japan formerly, Washington, D.C, USA there are rumors Japan has been getting close with the guys trying to solve that caste system and public defecation problem or maybe Japan just hates the Chinese more, MHT Corporation Higashi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo. Operation Mockingbird is an alleged large-scale program of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that began in the early years of the Cold War and attempted to manipulate domestic American news media organizations for propaganda purposes. According to author Deborah Davis, Operation Mockingbird recruited leading American journalists into a propaganda network and influenced the operations of front groups. CIA support of front groups was exposed when an April 1967 Ramparts article reported that the National Student Association received funding from the CIA. In 1975, Church Committee Congressional investigations revealed Agency connections with journalists and civic groups. In 1973, a document referred to as the "Family Jewels" was published by the CIA containing a reference to "Project Mockingbird", which was the name of an operation in 1963 wiretapping two journalists believed to be disseminating classified information. The document does not contain references to "Operation Mockingbird".

Re: The Difficult Ones

Creation of your own monsters and terrorists

More than 'Difficult' for a time he was a Most Wanted Terrorist

Some even alleged he was once part of a Harvard experiment on psychological control subsidized by the CIA and known in turn as MK Ultra, a participant in one of Henry Murray’s experiments at Harvard where Murray’s team bullied, harassed, and psychologically broke down participants.

He was always a bad psychologist or just worked with spooks?

Murray was also a co-developer, with Christiana Morgan, of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), which he referred to as "the second best-seller that Harvard ever published, second only to the Harvard Dictionary of Music."

During World War II, he left Harvard and worked as lieutenant colonel for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). James Miller, in charge of the selection of secret agents at the OSS during World War II, said the situation test was used by British War Officer Selection Board and OSS to assess potential agents.

In 1960, Timothy Leary started research in psychedelic drugs at Harvard, which Murray is said to have supervised.

Some sources have suggested that Murray's experiments were part of, or indemnified by, the US Government's research into mind control known as the MKUltra project.

Henry Alexander Murray an American psychologist at Harvard University, where from 1959 to 1962 he conducted a series of psychologically damaging and purposefully abusive experiments on minors and undergraduate students—one of whom was Ted Kaczynski, later known as the Unabomber. It has been suggested that Murray's work with Kaczynski helped consolidate the personal beliefs and world views that culminated in Kaczynski's later actions as the Unabomber.

Why is alcohol thought to be relaxing? Victorian and Edwardian explorers might hold the clue

https://theconversation.com/why-is-alco … lue-169595

Throughout history, alcohol has often been used medicinally – and is considered to have many helpful properties, including as an antiseptic and an anaesthetic. I’ve studied how explorers in the 19th and early 20th centuries used drink. Studying travellers can shed light on the scientific and medical understanding of alcohol because, in an era before clinical trials, medical writers drew on the narratives of explorers as evidence about the health effects of different foods and drinks. So their writings can help us learn about past approaches to alcohol and health.

Indeed, many Victorian Arctic explorers drank a “warming” glass of rum at the end of a long days’ sledging. They reported that it helped them to sleep and relax and relieve the tension. Similarly, British travellers in east Africa often drank small quantities of alcohol at the end of a day’s travel, viewing it as a useful “medicine” that helped them to deal with both the effects of fever and the emotional strains of travel. In one travel advice guide published in 1883, George Dobson, a British Army surgeon major, advised that in warm climates “continued labour, such as that of the sportsman and traveller, cannot be maintained for any length of time unassisted by the occasional and judicious use of alcohol”.

Health and balance

Initially and in small doses, alcohol seems to act as a stimulant, which makes your heart beat faster and gives you more energy. Soon, though, it acts as a depressant, inhibiting the action of the central nervous system, which slows your thinking and reaction times. These health effects were particularly important in early 19th-century medicine, as some medical theorists saw the body as a system that had to be kept in balance. And stimulants or depressants were seen as an important way of restoring balance if someone was unwell.

In time, these views became increasingly unpopular among scientists and medics and were replaced by theories of disease that sought to chart more specific causes of infection. For instance, “germ theory”, which was first proposed in 1861, showed that many illnesses were caused by microbes rather than climate. Similarly, British medics were becoming increasingly interested in the role of mosquitoes in spreading malaria. Such developments led to new medical approaches which sought to prevent and treat diseases common in warm regions.

was granted asylum in disgusting Swedistan

He had entered France 'legally', she said, and was carrying Swedish identity documents and a Swedish driving license.

The Swedish Migration Agency confirmed he was granted permanent residency in 2013 and, although the agency did not identify the suspect, said he subsequently sought Swedish citizenship in 2017 and 2018, both denied, and applied again in August last year. It failed again.

He decided to travel to France after the latest rejection.

He had also sought asylum in Switzerland and Italy. The French application was rejected last Sunday as he already had refugee status in Sweden, officials said.

convicted with a criminal record?

The paper added he was convicted for illegally claiming benefits in Sweden, and was handed a suspended sentence and a fine.

Mr Hanoun reportedly separated from his ex-wife eight months ago and they had not spoken in four months.

A woman identifying herself as his ex-wife told French broadcaster BFM TV he had not previously demonstrated violent tendencies.

"He does not call me for four months. [Our relationship] stopped because we lived in Sweden and he did not want to live in Sweden anymore," she said.

She added that her former partner was a Christian.

What are Taqiyya,  Al-tawriya, Kitman and Al-muruna?

In the horrific scenes, he first circles the playground, slashing at a bystander, and then clambers over its barriers to attack people and children inside. He appears to stab one child in a pushchair repeatedly.

He slashes at a man carrying rucksacks who tried to approach him, apparently trying to stop the attack.

He was later detained by police near the banks of the lake.

On Thursday, speaking from Annecy near the scene of the attack, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said: "These are very small children who were very seriously injured. As a parent and citizen, we are already very shocked."

French President Emmanuel Macron is due to travel to Annecy to visit the victims

They should check his phone history and hers, these two are probably former ISIS members, while there might have been genuine protests at the start in Syria it soon became a terrorist movement as guns flowed in from Libya, and I never believed the BS that Assad wanted to 'GAS' all his own people to death.
