Re: Zoom Collaboration

Update ... Hi kbd512 ...

I'm back on the Zoom system...

I started Zoom, entered the numeric code for the meeting, and then the passcode.

The meeting came up as NewMars Nightowl, so I'm definitely in the right place.

However, the twirly is next to Please wait for the host to start this meeting

I'm wondering if you are in a different meeting?

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Oh! In fine print, I see:

If you are the host, please login to start the meeting.

That might be where the host credentials need to go!

Re: Zoom Collaboration

If there is a member of the "old" Zoom group who is available to test the new Pro Zoom for NewMars, it appears the session is up and running. kbd512 was successful in creating a session, so we can create ad hoc meetings as needed.

However, the recurring meeting is apparently running, so if anyone has the link I sent out by email, and has a minute or two to spare, this would be a good time to try it.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The new Zoom is working! Yay!  RobertDyck joined us, and we are discussing the Large Ship and the Small Ship, and specifically surgical facilities.  We confirmed that the host can log out without ending the session.
We confirmed that the host can set up a member as a co-host, and RobertDyck was able to admit new attendees.
We tested a number of other features, which I may remember later.

Special for SpaceNut .... kbd512 has the credentials to run the new Zoom.

The original credentials were supplied by Executive Director James Burk.

If you would like to have a copy please let me know.  I can (and would) send it to your official email address.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

I just signed out at 22:26 local time...

kbd512 and RobertDyck are still in session .... if anyone else would like to join, and already has the link, please do so.

I'm inclined to publish the link, now that I know that the  Waiting Room feature works, but I'll wait for consensus ...

Voting members are:

kbd512
RobertDyck ....

Are you gents comfortable with publishing the link to the new meeting?

It will require either kbd512 or tahanson43206 to open the meeting and admit participants, but other than that, it won't be much different from the previous Zoom sessions.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Special message to Executive Director James Burk ...

Thank you (again) for providing the temporary Zoom account for us to try for (about) six months, and thank you for the new "permanent" account!

We seem to have survived our first session in the new regime.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The #1 Post of this topic is updated to show the login for the NewMars Zoom.

We are currently running a recurring Zoom, set up for 1 AM UTC.

Use time.is/utc to find the time at your location.

We have implemented a Waiting Room.

Please connect using the codes or link published in Post #1.

You will arrive in the Waiting Room.

One of the hosts will see your request for admission.

Admission is based upon the name you choose for your session.

If you have a problem, use the Zoom topic to communicate with the host(s)

The Nightowl Zoom is in session...

kbd512 is host, FriendOfQuark1 is present and the subject for starting out is the Finance Presentation.

For the record, I used the link in Post #1 of this topic to connect, and kbd512 accepted the request.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Today is Zoom day for NewMars...

Hopefully kbd512 will be able (and willing) to set up a session at 1 AM UTC (use time.is/UTC) to find the right time for your time zone.

I am disappointed that BeerMan will not be able to attend, due to the hour, which is inconvenient at his location.

I have extended an invitation to BeerMan (and to ALL NewMars members) to request a Zoom meeting at a time that suits them.

If you provide enough advance notice, (hopefully) either kbd512 or I will be able to set up a session to meet your needs.

An example of how this might be helpful is if you are working with someone on a project, and you could use a Zoom to accelerate the pace of communication).

I am NOT (personally) all that interested in social interaction for it's own sake.  The forum text facility provides plenty of opportunity for social interaction.

However, ** my ** preferences are subordinate to the needs of the members, so if you want to set up a social interaction, I can set it up for you.

Reminder for all: The login link and codes are available in Post #1 of this topic.

Anyone can activate those codes at any time.

However, kbd512 or I must be enlisted to unlock the Waiting Room.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Something has come up unexpectedly, so that I will not be able to attend tonight's NewMars Zoom.

Everything should be set up and running well at 1 AM UTC, since kbd512 will be serving as host.

It would be a courtesy to kbd512 if anyone wishing to attend the Zoom could post here ahead of time.

It is disappointing (to me for sure) to open a session and then have no one show up.

When will the next meeting take place?  It would be interesting to discuss options for the AHR.

I am not a manufacturing expert.  A lot of the difficulty involved in tailoring specific options concerns making the judgement as to: (1) What we can practically make on Mars using native materials; (2) What we can / should import from Earth; (3) What are the best options available for energy, food, habitable volume, etc, given the answers to (1) & (2).  These sorts of questions are difficult because detailed design studies are required to answer them.

What sort of materials are we going to be able to make on Mars in the first ten years after first landing?  Will we be able to produce a thousand tonnes of stainless steel within an acceptable mass budget?  Or are we more likely to be limited to lower grade materials, like cast iron and carbon steel?  Can we make a high performance steam turbine on Mars, or would we have to import it from Earth?  What about bearings?  Heat exchangers?  Pumps, etc?  Do we import thin gauge stainless steel sheet and use it to clad pipes and heat exchangers made from Martian carbon steel?  The design options are really a continuum.

The answers to these questions will determine what the final solution looks like.  If we have to work with poorer materials, then it does not rule out being able to build nuclear reactors.  But it will effect the design solutions available to us.  We may find ourselves building low temperature boiling water reactors or AHRs, with reduced efficiency.  Gas cooled reactors are another possibility.  If we can scale Mars manufacturing quickly, then it makes more sense looking at state of the art solutions, like molten salt or sodium cooled reactors with S-CO2 power generation loops.  You need good materials to be able to do things like that.  If we can import zircalloy clad, low enriched uranium fuel from Earth, then that opens other possibilities as well.

One advantage with the AHR: It would be relatively easy and cheap for Space X to develop, as AHRs have been around for a long time and have naturally built in reactivity control.  The downside is low efficiency and the need to dispose of a lot of low grade waste heat on a planet without natural bodies of water that can act as heat sinks.  If waste heat can be used to heat greenhouses or frames, then this problem has a neat solution.  If we are dumping the heat into a crater lake, that is another good solution.  So long as we have uses for the heat, then simplicity may win out over efficiency.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Testing - for the record .... the correct procedure to set up a Zoom using the new Professional account is for the host to start a connection like a regular participant, and then use the login button to upgrade to host.

At that point, the host can admit guests.

Fortunately, co-host kbd512 already knows this.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

My apology to FriendOfQuark1 for not having mastered the art of serving as a host.

Things went smoothly after I figured out how to serve as Host.

For SpaceNut re Zoom Collaboration....

As an experiment, NewMars set up a work session for FriendOfQuark1 and another party today.

Aside from the delay caused by my learning curve, the meeting seemed to go well.

The purpose of the meeting was to help to collect information for the presentation on how to finance a flight of Big Ship, or Little Ship, or "some" ship, to Mars and Back.

I ended up with an assignment, which I'll post here as a reminder:

In thinking about the problem of dealing with the forces at work between the two rotating masses, it occurred to me that in addition to the central shaft bearings, it might make sense to employ magnetic force (attractive or repulsive or both) to transfer force to the frame surrounding the rotating masses.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Today is Zoom Day for NewMars....

However, it is also time to reconsider how we use Zoom.   For a number of months, while RobertDyck was working hard on Large Ship, the weekly Zooms lasted for hours, and from my perspective, progress on Large Ship accelerated greatly as compared to text only progress.

However, Large Ship is in a dwell phase, and other projects have not picked up the pace.

The weekly Zoom ** is ** also a social gathering opportunity for NewMars members.

I am interested primarily in serving those members who want to pursue projects, and (hopefully) to achieve objectives faster by using Zoom for collaboration.

kbd512 is our co-host, and he has been the one who set up the Zoom Sessions at 1 AM UTC.

We (kbd512 or I) ** can ** move the time of the weekly Zoom forward to accommodate our European members.  We've had a standing offer in the past, but since no one chose to take us up on the offer, for the time being that offer is on the shelf.  All it takes is a request to put it back on the table.

We (NewMars) set up a successful project Zoom on Friday, for new member FriendOfQuark1.  I'm happy to accommodate similar requests.  This forum has the opportunity to help members to accomplish real goals in the real Universe.

As for today's Zoom ... if anyone would like to attend the 1 AM UTC Zoom with host kbd512, it would be helpful if they would post something here (in the Zoom topic) to let him know.  I will be busy with another activity at that time.

tahanson43206,

Nobody has joined.  Rather than do this every weekend, if someone actually wants to join a session to talk to someone else, then we can set up a session.
