For SpaceNut ... just FYI ... I dropped a hard copy letter into the post box this evening.
It contains both the Interstate 80 pipeline and the Cloud Drone Harvesting ideas.
The recipient is unlikely to respond, or even to acknowledge the letter. That is normal for large organizations receiving unsolicited proposals.
Never-the-less, as a citizen, I have attempted to perform my civic duty, and now will resume day-to-day work on the topics, as well as others that may inspire attention from time to time.

In this post: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 28#p196028
I have introduced the idea of a re-thinking of the Carbon Tax idea.
Please think about which politician (of the vast assortment available) might be receptive to the idea of a tax policy that rewards non-ground-sourced long chain fuels, and applies a modest penalty on ground-sourced fuels.

carbon credits have been around for a period of time now and while its being used its a poor substitute for combating increasing temperatures, drought and loss of ice around the world when those that product power from hydro, solar and nuclear would be better choices.

For SpaceNut re #2229
Thanks for noting the subject of Carbon Credits vs Carbon Tax.
What my post was about was the need to adjust the Carbon Tax idea, if hydrocarbon fuels are produced using solar, wind or nuclear energy sources.
It is my understanding Carbon Credits are bought and sold to help polluters to deal with their unwanted output.
However, perhaps Carbon Credits can be adapted for the manufacture of hydrocarbon fuels.
What my post was about was the undesirability of applying a Carbon Tax to a fuel made by humans using renewable or nuclear power.

Today's Trailbreaker is in progress ... it will try for 58200.
Testing/debugging of the new Auditor feature of WBA is progressing.
Today the data extracted from the log file came within 5 bytes of the data downloaded from FluxBB for the same post.
However, the mechanism to advance to the next post in the data file got lost, so that mechanism requires attention.
Mars_B4_Moon gave us another set of interesting and in some cases surprising (to me at least) posts today!
As a reminder, yesterday's North Houston NSS chapter meeting featured a speaker talking about NASA's long term High School outreach program. The video will be available for viewing shortly. You can check northhoustonspace.org if you are interested in learning about the High School outreach program.
Actually (come to think of it) you can ask Google for snippets about the NASA HUNCH program.
There is at least one web site: nasahunch.com
And from the presentatation, I believe there are others.
Google snippets included: www.hunchdesign.com
Over the years, a number of HUNCH designed objects have made their way to the ISS.

Meanwhile, the new Audit command is inching toward working ...
The issue of differences between the posted text and the recorded log text will be resolved by removing non-essential characters as a first step. The procedure to collect log data removes carriage returns and line feeds that are part of the online post text. To address this, the downloaded post will have these non-essential characters removed, so the remaining text can be compared to the historical data. The purpose of the activity is to find Smiley Faces and European punctuation, not to find carriage returns and line feeds.

For SpaceNut re new member FriendOfQuark1
Tonight's Zoom included the news that FriendOfQuark1 is ready to take us up on a standing offer of a membership in the forum.
He is interested in the problem of financing the Large Ship project.
I have started work on converting one of the recovered ID's, and will finish tomorrow.
Please think about where topics devoted to finances should go ... off the top, I would imagine the Economy Index level might be a good fit, but perhaps you have another preference. This is going to be about financing all phases of Large Ship, from design through return safely from Mars and recovery of all members of the manifest.
We have on hand upper bounds for mass and crew/passenger numbers.
We have fairly complete estimates for propulsion requirements, including Space Tugs at either end or at both ends of the flight.

That is one of the tall poles in the project for sure in obtaining a financial path.
We also need some sort of a scale model to put through testing but some of what we need are dynamic balancing testing. shielding and many more things.
These are additional cost up front before building a final design in orbit.
I gave sustainable life support via a greenhouse as capable of just under 400 if the electrical and mechanical system should fail based on the Nasa work.

Thanks for thinking about the problem, as we anticipate the arrival of FriendOfQuark1.
His immediate plan is to offer a presentation about financing large ship for the North Houston chapter later this year.
He spoke of inviting others to join NewMars to help.
NewMars has room for the creative thinkers like Void and kbd512, engineers like GW Johnson and Calliban, and the amazing mixture of other talents we have on hand. A few accountants ought to fit in without anyone noticing.
In the next post, I'll drop off a test of the new Audit feature!

However, if even a small minority find that the image tag slows down this forum to much then it should stay disabled. The reason is these forums should have as wide as an audience as possible.

Trailbreaker reached 58500 ...
There were 44 skips and no potholes.
Of the 44 skips, 21 were SpaceNut posts, so 23 posts require attention. That's about an hour's work.
Work on the Audit feature of WBA is progressing.
All that remains is to add code to a function to restore formatting characters to the Collection from the log file.
Posts in the FluxBB database often contain formatting characters to improve readability.
Those appear to have been lost as the text was collected from the log files.
In order to compare the live post to the recorded one, it is necessary to remove the formatting characters from the downloaded (live) post. However, before that post can be manually updated from the saved version, the formatting characters must be restored. I'll leave that exercise for tomorrow.
In the mean time, today's run provides some edits to perform.

For SpaceNut re #2238
The freeform nature of the forum allows for members to be creative in where they put things.
Fortunately (as you have done on numerous occasions) posts can be copied and pasted into the topics where they might be a good fit.
Here (in a nutshell) is my observation about the Zoom topic ...
Coming out of a Zoom meeting, the participants tend to be inspired with ideas and often energized to follow up a discussion. It seems to me appropriate for discussions in the Zoom to continue in the Zoom topic. That is where the Zoom participants would naturally look for them.
Those posts can (and i hope will) be copied and pasted into as many topics as they seem to fit.
The challenge is for ** someone ** to find the time to do that book keeping.

The new feature has passed offline testing. The output of the process yields text that can be manually installed over the damaged text currently in the NewMars database. The Smiley Faces and European punctuation will be restored, while everything else remains the same.
Because this is a manual process, it will also be possible to visually inspect the update before it is submitted. This will work well for posts short enough to appear complete in the edit window. Longer posts will be viewable in the bottom section, because that is how the browser handles a submission of replacement text.

The question to be addressed in today's work session is whether the reconstructed candidate is accurate and suitable for replacement of the version currently in the FluxBB database.

For SpaceNut re #2246
It will definitely be interesting (to me for sure) to learn about your brother's success in finding a publisher.
While we are comparing apples to oranges (hunting to ramjets), it seems to me there ought to be a small market for a book on ramjets.
There is ** certainly ** a market for books on hunting, even in today's more constrained world.
*** update at 14:02 ... I have begun the process of re-reading a book on how to publish for Kindle.
I bought this book exactly 10 years ago, when I was part of a team working on a book about science.
In the end, I got bogged down in a side track trying to publish for ePub, which is competitive with Kindle.
With the benefit of hindsight, i think that was a wrong turn. For Dr. Johnson's book on Ramjets, I am thinking of working up the material he has provided (opening chapter) for delivery to the Kindle publishing app.

I deleted the earlier account, and re-created it using a different TestID.
Hopefully the login process will go smoothly.
However, if it does NOT, then we may have to deal with a possible change to FluxBB itself since the last person we brought in.
Since we had five successes before this hiccup, I'd become a bit complacent, in thinking the account setup process was working.

FriendOfQuark1 says the password change feature did not work for him.
I'm wondering if updates to FluxBB might have taken place since the last time anyone changed a password.
We can use one of the TestiD's as a way of exercising the password change feature.
Such an exercise would require creating a new (temporary) email so the new password can be sent to the email address.
Do you have any interest in going through the exercise?
If you don't have time or would prefer not to, I can attempt the test.
I don't see any downside risk, because the TestID's are recoverable if we lose access.
