Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Post Repair initiative...

Today's Trailbreaker will try for 41700

Today's Re-Scan will cover 17001-18000

Update at 12:55 local time

Today's Trailbreaker finished with a Green screen, no potholes, and just 9 posts to fix.

Here is a sample of what a European Punctuation mark looks like:

Not blasé. They know Huygens is high-risk, so it very probably will fail, but if it doesn't the potential scientific payback will be immense, so they are willing to gamble.

(Nobody knows what the surface is like, for starters, so it could crash, or fall into a lake, etc...)

That was posted by a member from the Netherlands ... he's been responsible for a ** lot ** of the manual updates.

I'll launch the Inspector now.... it should come back with a clean report, but we'll see.

Today's Trailbreaker will try for a round number: 42000 (we're over  half way through to 77,000)

Today's Re-Scan will cover 18001-19000

Today's Trailbreaker encountered an Internet hiccup of some kind, so the run split into two segments.

The first was processed and the run was then resumed...

Completed Sequence for ID: 42000

There were three skips: 41888, 41923 and 41973

All three edits are complete.  The Inspector will now review today's updates.

Update at 18;11 local time. Inspector reported a clean bill of health for today's batch.

Today's Re-Scan will cover 18001-19000. it will begin at (about) 22:00 local time.

Update at 7:39 next day: The Re-Scan completed with a Green Screen.

There were 8 skips reported, and all 8 turned out to be potholes.

We have a clean batch.

Today's Re-Scan will cover 19001-20000

Update at 10:23 ... Today's Trailbreaker was interrupted by Internet turbulence at post 42102.

I don't have any way to capture what happened ... (there ** is ** a way but I have chosen not to use it)...

The net effect of whatever the turbulence was is that the laptop got logged out of FluxBB ... obviously that should not happen, but it has happened before, and will (no doubt) happen again.

In any case, the first 100 posts delivered 9 skips, so i'll manually update those before resuming at 42102.

However, several posts were reported as in need of attention:

Another had someone trying to write html instead of BBCODE.

Re: Housekeeping

This is a special item for SpaceNut ....

The English language sometimes gets the better of me ....

I tried to create a new topic about the specific problem of separating the components of a mixture, because that is a leading challenge of the present age.

However, your interpretation of the title I gave the topic helped me to realize I had not written the words that are needed.

I'm tossing the problem of how to word the topic back your way for a bit of back and forth ... I won't create any more topics until we've worked through the challenge of finding the right words.

I want to create a topic that enlists the talent we have available in the NewMars forum to deal with the challenge of separating molecules from each other in a mixture.  This is not a chemical process.... it is strictly a physical process.  However, chemists often use chemical processes to accomplish the needed separation, by taking advantage of the affinity of certain atoms for others.  After the desired molecules are captured by a chemical process, the results of that process can (sometimes) be carried off more easily.  For example, some processes cause desirable molecules to be lifted to the top of a mixture, or delivered to the bottom of a container.

Examples of physical separation are using filters of various grades to allow smaller particles to slip through, while keeping larger ones from continuing.

However, filtration is only ** one ** strategy of many strategies that can be brought to bear on a mixture, to try to isolate the various components.

In the case of Uranium separation, for example, gas separation is a strategy, and the use of centrifuges is another.

During World War II, (as I understand the history) the US invested in both strategies because it was not clear which was superior.

Today's Re-Scan will cover 23001-24000

Side note: Thanks for this observation ... I had to chuckle, because I had not thought of that format!

So with the calendar would be the Julian version which is the year followed by the day count so as to be able to know where you are in the mars calendar year.
That said we are on 0036459 if I read the format correctly in that we are in the 16th mont

Today's Trailbreaker finished with a Green screen.  It found 18 posts with issues.

Skip Analysis:  potholes: Zero - FluxBB rejects: 2 Mismatch: 16

Those two FluxBB rejects were definitely interesting ... It's a wonder the  original forum software accepted them.

All 18 posts look spiffy now!  Inspector will render judgement!

Inspector reported a clean slate. No skips. No potholes. No edits!

Tonight's Re-Scan will cover 23001-24000.  it will queue up at (about) 22:00 (after Zoom)

Update next day: Inspector finished with a Green screen after reaching 24000.

There were no skips.  There ** were ** four edits.

This was a FluxBB reject, for BBcode situations. Corrected.

However, it reported 23 skips, and that is more than the ideal of none.

Skip analysis: Potholes: Zero FluxBB rejects: 2 Mismatches: 21

Update at 14:48 ... all 23 are updated.  The mismatches are routine ... Smiley faces and the like.

The two FluxBB rejects took some decoding ... The authors were creative in composing their BBcode.

In some of these cases, the situation is garbled, so that it is difficult trying to figure out what they were trying to set off as quotes, and what not. Oh well! They are looking reasonable at this point. There's not much chance anyone except Mars_B4_Moon will see my handiwork.

The Inspector will now check all 23 posts.

The Inspector delivered a clean bill of health.

Today's Re-Scan will covery 24001-25000. It will start (about) 22:00 local time.

The re-scan finished with a Green screen and 8 skips.  All 8 turned out to be pot holes.

We are about 1/3 of the way through the overall scope of the current post repair series.

19 skips is OK ... there are no potholes, so we have a mix of mismatches and FluxBB rejects

Skip analysis: 3 FluxBB rejects and 16 mismatches

OK ... at least there are three "interesting" problems to solve.

Update at 15:00 local time ... well SpaceNut ... I knew this moment was coming:

SpaceNut wrote:

The biggest problem with Hubble is not the repair but is when. The actual reason that anything is being done in the first place is that it will come down on our little heads if nothing is done.
With Nasa's budget constantly being stripped or lowered it makes it very hard to do anything but to maintain those programs that are already in the pipe line.
Hubble is definitely worth saving but there must be a limit to the cost. Also Nasa must always design into any probe that circles where ever. The ability for a clean deorbit if it wishes to have safety, or no contamination to the environments that these probes circle to not be impacted.

That post is 44000 ... You do not have permission to access this page.

The skips count is going to be going way up, but my duties will be dropping.

Hopefully you've been working on your posts.  It'll be a while before WBA catches up with you.

We just reached 44,000, so we're more than half way to the goal.

Update at 15:22 local time ... Today's Inspector will encounter posts by SpaceNut for the first time ...

These were all FluxBB rejects ... I've commented before that all these BBcode errors should have been caught by the previous forum software.  One possible explanation is that the authors of that software may have simply been willing to guess what the customer/user was trying to do.

An example is closing bold and italics without slashes .... those were accepted by the previous software.

The FluxBB authors decided to be more picky.

In any case, Inspector found all seven of these and FluxBB accepted the  corrections.

Today's runs will try for 44400.

There were no potholes in this stretch ... about half the skips will have been SpaceNut posts.

From here on to the end of the entire series of 77,000 posts, about half the posts are by SpaceNut.

Skip analysis for this run: 24 skips total, 17 SpaceNut posts.

The few non-SpaceNut posts included a few FluxBB rejects and the usual Smiley faces and European punctuation.

All seem clear for inspection, which starts now...

Update before Inspector run at 14:26 ... analysis of the logs after SpaceNut joined the forum reveals that each discovery of a SpaceNut post generates a total of six lines, as compared to just two for any one else.

This is not a problem.  it just takes adjustment in procedure.  I'm thinking of adding a feature to the Extract utility to separate SpaceNut posts from all the rest.  It will require an extra stop in preparation for editing, but the time savings will be considerable.

Special for SpaceNut ... In today's run I found a noteworthy post by RobertDyck .... it was about his experience working in an engineering context.  I was tempted to put it into the Best Of topic for RobertDyck, but today is volunteer day and I was tuckered out.  I thought I'd mention it here though, in case you want to look for a post with text along the lines of: "I was one of those engineers" ... or perhaps "I am one of those engineers"

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Post Repair initiative ...

Today's Trailbreaker will try for 45300.

Today's Re-Scan will cover the final stretch in the current series: 29001-30000.

The range from 1-30000 is of interest because it was during that series that bugs in the procedures for both Trailbreaker and Inspector were worked out.

Overlooked/missed edits have been found in the past month, so the Re-Scan was definitely worth while.

Last night's run was clean, and I'll be surprised if tonight's Re-Scan reports any problems.

That said, the momentum to keep running Inspector in 1000 post chunks is strong, and I'm inclined to continue them until they catch up with Trailbreaker.  They should all produce clean reports, since the current inspector has been running since 30,000, but the laptop is willing to keep going, and the server doesn't seem to mind the exercise.

Today's Trailbreaker will start now ...

Update at 11:26 local time ...

Trailbreaker finished with a Green screen ...

There were no potholes.

There were 21 SpaceNut posts.

There were two FluxBB rejects and the rest were mismatches (Smiley faces and European punctuation)

Note from reading post by Void ...
An architecture for a habitat on Mars is a set of trenches dug up the side of Olympus Mons.
The idea comes from one of Void, about routing steam from one place to another in a tunnel.
The trench concept comes from a post of kbd512, about a machine that might be sturdy enough to dig a trench.
A trench dug for habitat would rise in a straight line from the valley floor up the side of the volcano to whatever distance is considered practical.
Steam would be delivered to a pipe in the trench, and heat from the steam would heat the interior of the cavity.
Water would condense after doing it's thermal duty, and that water would be available for the residents of the habitat to use as needed.
The regolith would be piled over the roof support structure, to provide mass to keep air pressure as needed, and to protect against radiation.
Windows could be built into the roof so that each apartment has a safe view of the terrain around Olympus Mons, but the residents are protected from radiation by an overhang of regolith.

Back to Post Repair ...

Edit of posts flagged by Trailbreaker is complete...

There was one with Russian language included.

There was another that failed to fetch when the program was running, but came up fine in manual mode.

The Inspector will now check the updates.

Re: Housekeeping

A trench is one of the more applicable methods to be able to start to build with from I think just about all of us here on the forum. Its the equipment, protection of it ect that we need to understand for mars as the cold does a number on metal for making them brittle and cause fatigue. The topic of oldfart1939 for the first mission has this with in it as well as does the water gathering from regolith.
The reasons for the dig and soil use is varied for is it for protection, and other purposes.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2142

Thanks for thinking about the trench up Mount Olympus idea....

It might be worth it's own topic, but the forum does not have an index level set up for construction of any kind.

All the index levels seem to be about larger scale thinking, and not about specific projects that might be undertaken.

If we were to create a line of discussion for construction of a habitat laid out on the slope of Olympus Mons, where might it go?

Thanks again for thinking about it.

Question for you ... Trailbreaker is reporting finding your posts... do you want to know the numbers of the posts?

I can deliver that information as part of the daily report.

Otherwise, I assume (?hope?) you are staying ahead of Trailbreaker.

Re: Housekeeping

Construction falls mostly under Planetary, Life support and science technology for where you might create the topic.

Finished cleaning up 1200 of my posts so that should hold for a bit.

Now to do some more of the un-ban of the converted user accounts back to those with valid accounts could log in to them.

Letters A and B are reset.

Reset 100 of the test accounts

edit
I got the impression of why bother to fix them.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2144

Thanks for suggestions re a construction topic .... Life Support is probably the closest fit for habitat design.  I think Void's idea is worth supporting, although as often happens, he's moved on already to other ideas.

1200 of your posts is a ** bunch ** ... thanks for doing all that work!  I'm hitting about 20 a day right now, so your advance is good for 60 days ... all of May and June. We will be working through July and into August.

I'm starting to peck away at the Auditor again.  Today I collected 27,000 posts out of 30,000 ... the missing posts are in fragmented logs that occurred because in the early days the program was halting instead of handling unexpected situations. All that is behind us now, but the debris field is going to require a lot of manual attention.  The end result (if I follow through) would be a run that compares the posts in the online database with the ones proposed for update.  The amount of work to find a few Smiley Faces is way out of line, but I'm committed to finding them if they can be found.

I sure wish I'd known about the Smiley Face problem sooner, but there were more significant challenges to be dealt with at the time. As things stand, there are question marks were the Smiley Faces would have been, so the posts are readable.

Thanks for returning to preparing the User ID's for future service ...

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re finish the ID's ...

I can understand the question of why bother!  It may be a difference in personalities.

I tend to like to finish what I start, even if it takes years, and it sometimes ** does ** take years.

I'll be happy when every last one of those ID's is ready to go.  I have an optimistic point of view that we'll need them at some point, and be glad to have them.

Last night's Inspector gave another clean slate report after reaching 30,000.

It is possible we have now reached the point where the Trailbreaker started working correctly.

I'm planning to keep running the Inspector in 1000 post batches until we catch up to the 300 post runs.

That will be at least 15 days out, because we just crossed 45000 with Trailbreaker.

Trailbreaker finished to a Green screen.

It reported mismatches, FluxBB rejects, and SpaceNut posts.

All corrections have been applied, so Inspector will now check the work.

Tonight's Re-Scan will keep going in 1000 post lots ... this evening's run will cover 30001-31000.

Update at 18:38 local time ... Inspector finished with a Green screen.

There were no edits! Clean run.

Tonight's re-scan will begin shortly. I am expecting a clean run, but there is no harm in verifying earlier work.

Update next day local time:

The Re-Scan finished with a Green screen, Zero skips, Zero potholes and Zero edits.

We appear to have moved solidly into the region where the bugs were removed from the script and WBA itself.

I'll keep running these re-scans until we catch up.  It is reassuring, although I admit it is redundant.

However, the browser was sent off to far away points on the internet a significant number of times.

I'll now check the results, to see what happened ...

OK, so we have a mix of SpaceNut posts and a combination of mismatches and FluxBB rejects.

Report from Extract: there were 25 SpaceNut posts so we have 44 less 25 >> 19 edits to do ... not too bad.

Update at 15:40 local time ... edits of 19 posts are completed

These were all mismatches ... I got a chance to see mostly European punctuation.

One post caught my eye and I'd like to offer it as a suggestion for an email...

Euler for email

Euler and his correspondent were (apparently) juniors in college in 2004 ... they'd be well established in their careers at this point, if all went well.

I'll start the Inspector next.

Tonight's re-Scan will cover 31001-32000. I'm expecting a clean report. We are well into the debugged phase.

Update at 18:06 local time ... inspector finished with a Green screen

It reported a clean run! No potholes and no edits.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Post Repair initiative

At the most recent Zoom, kbd512 said he was willing to run the ID upgrade script when you are satisfied it was working correctly.  He ran tests, and he showed you the script.  As kbd512 recalls what happened, you were still not willing to give him the green light to complete the work.  Please go back and study the posts where he showed you the script and the test results.  The procedure seemed to me to do what is needed, and not to do something else.

The alternative is for you to do all that work manually.

Today's Trailbreaker will try for 46200

update at 12:48 local time ...

SpaceNut ... on the assumption you are the only member who looks at this incredibly boring topic, I'll toss in that I just returned from voting.  I usually vote by mail, but the primary crept up on me, so I went over to the nearby Rec center to see what amazing advances in technology have come into play since the last time i was there. I was not disappointed ... and optical scanner read my driver's license, and the operator grilled me to be sure I am me. After that, I was directed to the computer voting machine, which printed a ballot for me.  Then I fed the ballot into the ballot reader, and received my voting sticker.

The occasion was made enjoyable by my discovery that the gent who's been working the polls for the 30 years I've lived in this community is ** still ** there.  He is a local celebrity because he used his own income to preserve a building that had fallen into disrepair.

I took the opportunity (of voting) to try to give a boost to a young person who seems promising. This particular person will NOT win anything, but I wanted to try (in a small way) to provide encouragement. The person at the top of the ticket will win the primary, so my vote doesn't do any harm, and it may do some good.

The Trailbreaker finished with a Green screen...

Total Input Lines 12,776
Total Output Lines 152
  Lines containing String One 74
Lines containing String Two 60 <<== 30 SpaceNut posts

Those four line sequences that say "You do not" are your posts.

After I remove those from the list, I am down to 14 posts that need attention, which is reasonable.

That figure of 14 is a count of 2 items per post. The actual count of posts is 7, and they are all corrected.

The Inspector will now check the work.
