Re: Zoom Collaboration

For RobertDyck ... per your request, I created a folder "RobertDyck" at the top level of the NewMars Dropbox, and sent an email.

This folder is at the same level as the one for kbd512 and NewMars itself.

Please see if you can upload a file.  If you ** can ** upload a file, and if you are not sure how to share it with the world via the NewMars forum, I'll be happy to pass along what I've learned in working with the files of GW Johnson.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

This post is a short update about re-learning Corel Video Studio to work with Zoom recordings.

A couple of days ago I solved a problem of file transfer from a more modern computer to the older one set up to perform video editing.

The recordings are now available on the video workstation, and today I re-learned how to find a sequence that might work for a short YouTube.

On December 27th, only kbd512 and I were present, and kbd512 did not activate his video, so there's not much to see.

I am thinking of making a one minute sequence for testing all phases of the steps needed to deliver a YouTube video.

I'll tackle that tomorrow.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

This post is for anyone who might want to use a headset while working with Zoom.

Use of a headset helps to prevent problems with audio feedback, and it also has the potential to greatly (or at least somewhat) improve audio quality compared to what might be available from stock computer speakers.

I asked Google for help, and it came back with this (to me) useful advice:\\

People also ask
How do I enable microphone feedback?
How to Hear Yourself on Mic in Windows 10
Open Sound settings. Right-click the volume icon on the bottom right of your taskbar and choose “Open Sound settings”.
View your microphone's device properties. ...
Click “Additional device properties”
Enable mic playback to hear your own mic.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

It seems highly unlikely anyone will find this of interest, but .... for the record ...

Corel VideoStudio X4 is (apparently) no longer supported by Corel.  That is not a surprise, but it is a bit disappointing.

On the ** other ** hand, the program seems to be running as well as it did in 2011.  A quirk is that the help file only comes up with Internet Explorer.

Chrome balked at the first page, but it provided the uri to the file, and Internet Explorer obliged by showing the file.

I ran the Zoom recording for 2021/12/27 until I had jotted down locations I want to assemble into a test video.

Because the help file is large, I decided to set the project aside for tonight, and take it up again tomorrow or Saturday.

***
In other (somewhat related) activity ... I stopped in at the GW Johnson Postings topic and removed all links to files that should be pdf's.

I'll work on replacing those links (most likely on Saturday).

I also added text to explain the difference between the various spreadsheets that are intended to be downloaded by students.

The Microsoft versions are now identified and contrasted with the Linux/Apple versions.

It is true that most Linux OS and Apple can read Microsoft files, but Open Office is a universal standard so it is available if desired.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Today is Zoom Day for the NewMars forum.

It is 17:43 UTC as we speak, and no one from our European membership has requested a Zoom meeting.  Thanks to the generosity of kbd512, I am available to host such a meeting if one is requested, but time is definitely getting short.  The best time to request such a meeting is in the week BEFORE Zoom Day.

For anyone thinking of attending the US/Canada/Mexico Zoom at 1 AM Monday UTC, please let kbd512 know if you are going to be late.  He was far more patient than I would have been last week, when our attendee membership was delayed in connecting.

For kbd512 ... I am planning to drop in at 2 AM UTC Monday. Thanks again for covering the Zoom at 1 AM UTC Monday.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

My copy of the "drag bible" was written and self-published by Sighard Hoerner,  who worked aerodynamics for the Messerschmidt Bf109 propeller-driven fighter in the mid 1930's,  then emigrated to the US after WW2.  His wife continued publishing that book after he died,  until she died.  There is also a "lift bible" written by Hoerner and Henry Borst.  Both are filled with plotted data,  examples,  and all sorts of formulas to use.

You can tell Hoerner was German by the sentence structure he used writing in English.  It's sort of backward,  resembling German.  His sentences often sounded sort of like the way Yoda talked in the Star Wars movies.  That rear-first word order thing.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Our regular Zoom sessions are coming up on Sunday (tomorrow).

kbd512 has kindly agreed to host the evening session, set for 1 AM UTC, for convenience of members in Canada/US/Mexico

I am available to host a Zoom for our European members, at 19:00 UTC if anyone makes a request. Video is not required.

I am pitching a project related Zoom, and will report if anything develops.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The Zoom session was in progress when I logged in at 9 PM my time (2 AM UTC).

GW Johnson and kbd512 were deep in discussion of the Two Habitat Large Ship.

At 9:12 my time, GW Johnson began to discuss the paper's he's written about orbital mechanics and related matters.

***
For kbd512 ...thanks for picking up on the chat message.... I had no idea my microphone is not working well.  I take part in other Zoom meetings, but no one had reported the muffled effect that GW Johnson reported.

I have a head set with mike, and will try that in place of the Logitech video mike.

FYI ... I'm hoping to get a chance to practice with GW Johnson ... he's being considered for a presentation at the NSS chapter in Houston, after the talk by RobertDyck on March 12.  GW has indicated I might be able to play the slides for him, and I would be happy to do that, but would like a practice session.

Any chance we could slot a bit of time next week?

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The Zoom session at 1 AM Monday UTC is (generously) hosted by kbd512

For kbd512: via email, I learned today that GW Johnson may be out of town Sunday evening and (possibly) not able to join the evening Zoom.

A special Zoom on Saturday is planned to rehearse a presentation by GW Johnson, tentatively scheduled for April 9th.

This talk is designed as a logical follow up to the Large Ship presentation by RobertDyck.  The talk by GW Johnson will look at propulsion alternatives, and flight plan alternatives.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

For kbd512 re #213

Thanks for confirming you already knew!  I figure GW was just covering all bases when he mentioned it to me.

I hope other members decide to take advantage of the opportunity you (and RobertDyck) provide, to catch up on a wide ranging set of topics.

Side note ... The Seattle Chapter of Mars Society has it's meeting on Sundays early in the month.

I'm not sure if it is the first or second Sunday, but our meetings were taken offline when their meeting starts.

This note is NOT for you, since you would (of course) know about that complication.  I'm posting the reminder here for anyone who might be thinking of joining the meeting late.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Today's Zoom is on track to open at 2 PM Houston time.

This time is chosen because both both expected guests live in the Houston time zone.

GW Johnson will coach me through slide presentation, and the NSS chapter representative will provide feedback as needed.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Zoom session: Saturday 2022/02/05 at 2 PM Houston time

The session will be started and running on a Chromebook at about 10 minutes before the hour.

I'll be opening a second workstation just at 2 PM Houston time.

Update at 14:23 Houston time ...

Thanks to GW Johnson and the representative from North Houston chapter of NSS!

I'm really happy with how well this went.  I was able to show the slides, and Dr. Johnson gave his presentation at a pace that was comfortable for him.  We stopped as soon as it was clear everything is working, so that the NSS representative does not see the presentation twice.

We will be able to run the presentation on April 9th virtually, if necessary.  As things stand, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson are planning to drive to Houston and stay overnight.  The NSS representative will suggest a hotel/motel that would be convenient.

***

Meanwhile, we have a request from NSS North Houston to RobertDyck ... they would like to advertise your talk ahead of your presentation on March 12th.  Please provide them with the text you want them to show on their web site.

You are welcome to send it to NewMarsMember if that is convenient.  I'll forward it immediately.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The Sunday evening Zoom is coming up shortly.  Time.is/utc reported 24 minutes after midnight in London a short while ago.

kbd512 will be serving as host.  If anyone would like to join and needs the credentials, please post a note here.

The credentials will be provided via the email address you have on file.

While this time slot is best for Canada/US/Mexico, anyone is welcome to join in.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Thanks for kbd512 for hosting the Zoom this evening!

Thanks to RobertDyck for providing a long and detailed document ahead of the March 12th presentation!

We looked at the meeting site in Houston.  It turns out to be just a few miles from the home of kbd512, so there is a possibility he might be able to visit when GW Johnson drives over from McGregor, Texas to give his talk.

I took the time to poke in on the recording of GW slide rehearsal with tahanson43206 that had the Lizard king and was very delighted to see you all and hear the words not just see them in writing.
I am also pleased to see that we have a champion with James for what we are doing to bring forth concepts with a great deal of technological content to them.

Today is Zoom day at NewMars

We have an open offer for our European members: It is now 12:33 in London, and the Early Zoom is available 6 and 1/2 hours from now, at 19:00.

I am available to host the event, thanks to the generosity of kbd512, who is hosting the Late Zoom at 1 AM UTC Monday.

However, no one has requested the early Zoom.  I would consider a Zoom with as few as one person a win at this point.

If someone decides to pursue this opportunity, you can post in this topic, and it is likely I will see it before 19:00 UTC.

I'll be joining the Late Zoom at 21:00 my time, as usual.

This is the Second Sunday of the Month, so the Seattle Mars Society chapter will pre-empt the Zoom at 3 AM UTC.

The NewMars meeting will expire after two hours.
