Tuesday
1. 7 PM PDT (9 PM CDT; 10 PM EDT): We welcome back DR. JOHN HUNTER for his good news progress report for his Green Launch Co at Yuma Proving Grounds. Don't miss his great news!
***
Here are some hasty notes
There is mention of the suitability of this launch method for Mars, as well as the Moon.
Dr. John Hunter
Rail Gun … 12 shots limit of barrel
2.4 km /sec
Entry level ..
Impulse launch … hydrogen and oxygen and other
High speed. . pure hydrogen
Super Harp about 3 km /s
Another 8 km/s11 km/s is the world record for any type of launch
Green Launch …. combustion system …
Listener question …
What’s application ?
Elon … about $1000 a pound …Really talented people working like crazy
Steve Jobs … talented people
Elon … picked the best people …
Subset after Elon … FedEx of space
Deliver things just in time … something Elon can’t do
Want to be able to help in climate change debate …
Raised four kids
Dr. Livingston … what is timeline
37 km target … this year
Taking funding …
Luckily things are moving our way
Sampling the mesosphere…
Hypersonic vehicles …. hypersonic testing ….
China Russia ….
Designed toys and had them built in China so like China
Mach 5 and Mach 12 … hypersonic …
Can do scramjet testing several times a day …
Believe in doing a lot of tests and take a lot of data
Have done things like that before at Livermore…
Late 90’s … scramjet … Mach 9 reached
First … FedEx … to any orbit
Second … atmosphere sampling
Third … scramjetCommercial return … at least a year
Knows market for sounding rockets … produce noxious fumes
That would seem worth pursuing … about a $6 million market
Should be able to take $2 million of thatScramjet … on the order of a billion $ per year now
usual suspects … wind tunnels … need free flight tests
Could easily be a $20 million project … not there yet
? James Webb ? … modified a weapon to work with a modified gas mixture.
Rocket Lab … a long path for those guys … not an overnight success…
Question … Yuma ?
A lot of sites in mind if we are going orbital…
Have to serve downrange …
Elon prefers South Texas …
California … you want to go where people want to see you …
Dr. Hunter went to the island where Elon tested Falcon 9
Elon hired people at Quad to manage the financial risks…
Got that first orbital launch…
Dr. Hunter … quad is a beautiful place…
A lot of Americans there … military base is there
A nice place to go …
Five years? … Should dominate the mesosphere market …
Should dominate … payloads under 20 pounds … FedEx marketNuances of rocket equation do not favor small rockets
3% payload fraction for Falcon 9
1/10 % for small rocket
*** Initial surge of velocity should provide advantage
Derek … history of combustion gun….
Foible … explode / detonate
Secret Sauce … intellectual property plus isotronic ? Ignition
Went to isotronic ignition … capacitor bank … six sparks simultaneous
Don’t have time for a wave …
Beaver …. trying to restore beavers …
Dr. Livingston … sensors on whales … tracking wild life
***
Eric ? … tracking beavers …Have beavers in Camp Pendelton … … new method of launch
Mojo meter … first shot gave a boost
Fun project … interesting location …. get results …
Giant bang ….
Dr. Livingston loved throwing grenades in boot camp
God bless those Ukrainians …Dr. Livingston … question about concern for wild life
Yuma … 1000 square miles …
Wild horses … watering hole about 10 miles from the base
Coyotes near the base
Wife provides water for folks in the desert
Marshall … reference to Gerald Bull
Useful on Moon?
Looked at Moon and Mars ….
1995 … Jordan Kare … passed away … great guy love laser propulsion
Concocted a scheme … 2 ½ km /s moon
Looked at Moon … capture the Hydrogen and reuse it
That looked quite practical … very doable … back in the 90’s
Looked at Mars since then….
Elon is only a few years away
You want to recover stuff….
Capture 99.9% of hydrogen and recycle
Winners on Mars … launch into Mars orbit … 5 or 10% of chemical launch.
Marshall … recovering most of the hydrogen
Built one for DARPA … recovered most of the hydrogen…
Silencer … large volume … cool the gas downrange
Capture the H2 and reuse …
Marshall … airplane you’re building …. ? MoJo ?
Wiring harness has a booboo in it …
Dr. Livingston … are you happy with the turn you took ?
I probably took a lot of wrong turns
Four years ago … massive heart attack … kid did compressions on chest …
Had a number of girl friends and wives …
***
Linda … question about near death experience …No recollection of the experience … no memory …
Saved by third kid …
***
Dr. Livingston … Jordan Kare … launching from the MoonMars … another option
Odds 80% Elon will have someone on Mars in 4 years
5 km/s at Mars …
Angle for Mars … just in time ….
***
Read….Green Launch … reading text
Medical emergency …
Needed blood …
Greenlaunch capsule arrived …
Rocket arrived three days later …
***
“BE” Before Elon eraAppreciation for Elon … Internet for Ukraine
Question … does the Greenlaunch system have military application
Dr. Livingston … what’s a military application
email question ….
Chinese and Russians have hypersonic missiles …
Depressed orbits … coming fast …
Launch between mach 5 and mach 10 … kill these things
Maneuver …
These threats aren’t theoretical …
Dr. Livingston …. across the board with potential …
911 happened … asked to work on military projects
Before preferred to stay away from military …
Decides to become a weapons merchant …
Dr. Livingston … why is it taking so long for speed to take so long?
Speed for manned speed is extremely difficult …
Mach 3.4 …. had to wear space suits because it got so hot.
Accidents increase with Mach number.
***
Russians had Tu 144 … Concorde … unwieldy aircraftHypersonic … great for weapons systems…
Rockets work in practice like crazy…
More praise for Elon …. example what you can do if you’re an American, and he’s not an Americans
Caller … email …. concluded that anything above Mach 3 too dangerous
Question … long range gun applications … Gerald Bull … assassinated ...
The usual suspects are not competent …
Didn’t want to help … after 911 decided to assist
Carla … Chicago … Putin nuclear threat?
Why do you discount the nuclear threat …
Difference between Mig 29’s and US aircraft …
At a minimum give them the Migs…
Lives near San Diego …
Dr. Livingston … question about flow of information about Ukraine
Dr. Hunter … two news folks killed…
Elon’s starlinks …. Putin can’t cut off …
Dr. Livingston … working on signal protection …
Private sector … providing information ….
Late 80’s … prediction that private news is transparent … imaging
Walter ? … intelligence agencies may be having a hard time keeping up.
Dr. Hunter is a right wing guy … news are a bunch of lefties
Question … are you hiring ?
How can students participant … young people … smart and have a good attitude.
Intern went on to work for NASA …
Roger – phoenix … ? Cubesats ? School projects?
Can Greenlaunch serve the personal market?
Run the 40 yard dash in a few seconds …
We’re not the guys who design cubesats …
Darwinian thing … windmills grew to a 100 feet diameter
Satellites may be like that ….
If I understand correctly, Dr. Hunter and his team are aiming for a niche launch market in the 20 pound range (10 Kg) with rapid delivery as a feature, unmatchable by any other launch method.
He is also looking at the market for taking samples of atmosphere for science and weather prediction.
Finally, there is a potential for opportunities testing scramjet devices when they are ready for live testing.
The mechanism is an explosion in the barrel. This is ** way ** different from the pure hydrogen launch system he's been developing.
The recording of the interview includes discussion of (a) proprietary IP and (b) a system of simultaneous ignition of a gas mixture to prevent pressure waves from building up.
