Re: Zoom Collaboration

I got kicked off,  too,  with the same "host has another meeting in progress" message.  It doesn't say who the host is.  It never told me I was the host.  Even if it did,  I would not know what to do.  Monkey-see,  monkey-do is about all I can manage.   This zoom stuff is way beyondd that.

I did look at the tug notion,  and it proved to reduce the propellant requirements by roughly a quarter.  I did figure out how to do the tug assist for both departures and arrivals,  and I created another worksheet in the spreadsheet to do that.  All I have run is Raptor engines on LOX-LCH4.  While reduced,  the propellant quantities are still enormous,  in the many thousands of tons.

It might be possible to do the same sort of thing with the nuclear concepts.  I dunno yet.  Whether this might apply to electric,  I really don't know.

GW

PS I tried the alternate meeting ID.  I assumed the same passcode,  but that failed.  It said "wrong passcode".  Meanwhile,  even the forums site has slowed down.  Pages are failing to load.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

For GW Johnson re #177

Thanks for reporting in!

I'll ask SpaceNut to ask for advice from Executive Director James Burk!

The system has been working reliably for so long, I was starting to become a bit complacent.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

kbd512 and I had a session with my zoom session. It finally disconnected just now, 12:39am. Good night.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

We still have a lot to learn about Zoom .... I am wondering if one of us accidentally transferred host status from one participant to another.

That might explain why the system said that we would have to wait for the host to grant admission.

Somehow the new host (assuming that happened) had activated the admission granting feature.  I have never used that feature, but I know it exists.

In any case, kbd512 has kindly agreed to host next week's session at the later time (1 AM UTC Monday).  I will be freed up to try to start a new Zoom session earlier in the day on Sunday.

The offer to set up something for our European members remains open.  It doesn't ** have ** to be 19:00 UTC Sunday.  That time was suggested (by RobertDyck) as a candidate time.

In addition, there is the opportunity to set up a Zoom for projects, such as work underway by GW Johnson on what may become a set of educational opportunities with permanent storage on Dropbox.

We have established the first demonstration of what that might look like in the Orbital Mechanics topic, where GW Johnson's image of a Space Tug in operation is available to all to view.  Use the Search Term Tug to find the post.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Tom:  I could not send the updated big ship propulsion study file with the tug results in it this morning.  Our internet was down at the house this morning,  and I do not have access to my laptop or email at the auto repair shop.  Will try again when I go home at the lunch hour. --  GW

Re: Zoom Collaboration

For GW Johnson re #182

Thanks for the head's up! about the Internet outage at your house!

I'll stand by for the new file, and look forward to putting it on display when it arrives!

(Changing gears) .... I was thinking of waiting for the latest update before posting, but since you sent me a pdf to get started yesterday, I'll go ahead and post that. It is easy to replace one file with a newer one, so we can do updates as you create them.

I'd like to try to get this new system running as soon as possible, so we can get some experience with it.

***
This next could go into Housekeeping, but since I am here, I'll just ask about the laptop of Mrs. Johnson ... you had indicated a few days ago she was using your laptop because her's was not acting normally.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Hers is dying,  but the Geek Squad got a bit more life out of it for her.  Meanwhile,  she has a new desktop computer,  that we are in the process of trying to make operational.  That means my laptop is not serving two masters anymore.  At least not right now.

I sent you 4 files by email:  (1) pdf of latest update to big ship propulsion showing results regarding tug-assisted departures and arrivals,  (2) the revised spreadsheet with the new worksheet where I ran the tug numbers,  (3) a list of spreadsheets with user manuals I have available,  which might be of interest to forum readers,  and (4) a list of powerpoint slideshow files with presentation note documents.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

For GW Johnson re #184

First, thanks for the good news of the new desktop in your household!  That is promising, because it may have ports for additional monitors, if your interests ever stretch that far.  I have a work system set up with four (used for editing) and most systems have at least two monitors.

Second ... thanks for the latest batch of files via email.  I'll plan to tackle those tomorrow.

We are only beginning to understand the potential of the new Dropbox permanent storage for NewMars data.

For SpaceNut re #186

Thanks for asking!

A meeting from 1 AM UTC to 3 AM UTC is plenty long, and RobertDyck was able to set up a Zoom session to continue with kbd512.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Update on Zoom related initiatives ...

A European Zoom (at 19:00 UTC) is an option.  I'm available to serve as host if there is anyone interested in trying the technology.
Video is NOT necessary.  Audio connection only is fine, if that is preferred.

The evening session will be hosted by kbd512.  The evening meetings have been running (on the order of) four hours or so. Members are free to come and go during the sessions.  Anyone wishing to participate (who does not already have the credentials) may request them here.

I just completed a successful test of a set of files provided by Executive Director James Burk (courtesy of SpaceNut).  The files played correctly from a NTSF USB stick on a Windows 7 machine.  I will now test them on an older system which has video editing software.

The goal here is to (try to) create short YouTube videos for educational or presentation purposes.

We have achieved some success in storing images with imgur.com, and lately have added storage of files on the new NewMars Dropbox.

Ultimately, I am hoping we (forum members) can create educational experiences which combine video with file links and image links that will persist into the future.  The laws of physics and the nature of chemical processes are not going to change, so an investment in educational experiences based upon physics or chemistry should have lasting value.

Update at 16:00 local time ... Corel Video Studio is scanning one of four video recordings from the Zoom session of 20211227.

It has been ten years since I worked with this software, and I have forgotten almost everything.

The recording appears to be 2 hours long.

The audio recording is available separately, and I may be able to process that and make it available via Dropbox account.

I'm letting the Corel Video Studio process the 640x360 pixel version of the recording right now, to see if it can work it's way through the entire two hours.

Update at 19:12 local time ... the attempt of Corel Video Studio to scan the 640x360 pixel video recording from Zoom halted at about minute 5 (of 2 hours) with a Flash exception showing on the screen.  After discarding the Flash exception, the scan was asked to resume, and it did.

At this point in the recording, the Chromebook background is showing: NewMars Zoom Meeting Host Station Chromebook.

Update much later .... The re-learning process with Corel Video Studio is making headway.  I am now able to move through the file, and play segments at any point.  Tomorrow I'll attempt to excerpt a short sequence to see if I can make a YouTube video.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The (proposed) European Zoom time is coming up in an hour.

If anyone from our European membership would like to have me set up a session at 19:00 London time, I'd be happy to do that.

kbd512 has kindly agreed to host the US/Canada/Mexico Zoom at 1 AM UTC Monday.

Those sessions have proven durable and interesting.  They are free wheeling discussions, and every now and then they record a small bit of information about the Mars project that I find worth noting.

it is ** not ** necessary to display video if you prefer just audio.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

It is UTC 23:35 (or so) .... kbd512 will be starting the late Zoom at 1 AM Monday (London time).

If there is someone who would like to attend, and who does not already have the credentials, please post a request here.

My plan is to join the Zoom at (about) 2 AM UTC, if all goes well.

It's about 20 after the hour.  I don't think anyone is joining, but I'll stick with it until the end of the hour, just in case someone shows up.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Sorry. Worked this afternoon. Lost track of time. It's now 7:50 and kbd512 is connected, but I don't see him. His screen is black with his name, and microphone is muted. Tom and GW aren't here.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

The Zoom session was in progress at 2 AM UTC when I connected.

I discovered a few minutes later that kbd512 had held up the session for nearly an hour while waiting for RobertDyck to arrive home from work.

Thanks also, to kbd512, for freeing up the hour between 1 AM and 2 AM for me. I really appreciate it!

My (tentative) plan is to see if I can create an edited audio track from the meetings.  I don't know how long that would take, and I don't know how may folks might be interested in them.

There are moments when a particular sequence of discussion is packed with useful information, and then discussion may head off in an interesting but unrelated direction for a while.

Re: Zoom Collaboration

Follow up to RobertDyck ...

Per our discussion, if you would like to have a folder on the NewMars Dropbox, I'd be happy to set one up.

We might need a couple of days to make sure everything works to your satisfaction.

***
For kbd512 ... I was interested to hear your discussion of bearings, and will keep it in mind for a possible audio snapshot.

I'm still trying to re-learn how to work with the Zoom recordings, but making a short audio segment for display in one of the NewMars posts should be possible.

Best wishes to both of you for a productive week ahead!

Robert,

I think James is using the Zoom account now.

I received a message stating that the meeting was ended by the host.
