clark,

I'm not happy about militarizing space, either, but the Russians and Chinese are already moving ahead with their own projects.  They're going to militarize space, whether you want them to or not.

Re: Trump Proposes U.S. ‘Space Force’ to Guard the Galaxy

That said we are just equalizing the playing field so that its a draw for its use. Its the same thing as with the many satellites we have orbiting earth at this time as well.
As mentioned we need to protect the people doing this work in orbit from the space radiation as well as there is little protection for those given the task to protect that high ground.
I am sure that man can evolve in time to the levels that we would receive as suggested by the animals around Chernobyl.

SpaceNut,

Yes, in warfare, the enemy gets to vote on how you respond to them.  Thus far, nuclear weapons haven't destroyed the human race.  It turns out that not even most military personnel are eager to start a nuclear war.  However, all sane military leaders want equivalent capability to the enemy to prevent the enemy from believing that they have the upper hand, emboldening them to attack under the belief that they can win.

The Space Force Is Now in Charge of the Secret X-37B Space Plane

Twitter was carrying a post that indicated a unit was formed for just the space plane...this does make sense to do as its very specialized or mission control....

Delta 9's Detachment 1 "oversees operations of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle, an experimental program designed to demonstrate technologies for a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the U.S. Space Force," according to the unit's fact sheet.

Re: Trump Proposes U.S. ‘Space Force’ to Guard the Galaxy

This is one of the things to keep and not one to disband.
What happens to the Space Force after the Trump administration?

Compared with the budgets and personnel for the other branches of the U.S. military, the Space Force is lean. And technically it's part of the Air Force, just as the Marine Corps is part of the Navy.

Consisting of about 2,100 people as of Nov. 1, the Space Force commanded a budget of $40 million for its operations and maintenance in fiscal year 2020.

Meanwhile, the Air Force has more than 325,000 active duty personnel and a budget of $168 billion for fiscal 2020. (The Air Force designated almost $14 billion of that for space capabilities. These projects have since become part of the Space Force.)

For fiscal year 2021, the Space Force is requesting a budget transfer from the Air Force of $15.3 billion. And over time, as space programs from other services start consolidating into the Space Force, their budgets should follow

Re: Trump Proposes U.S. ‘Space Force’ to Guard the Galaxy

SpaceNut,

Space Force came from "Orange Man", and is therefore "bad".  Party ideology must be satisfied.  In the same way that the Air Force was separated from the Army, President Trump wanted to separate space operations into a single operational entity since all services rely on space capabilities and one of his goals was the elimination of redundant bureaucracies so that each military branch could focus on its core competency.  The Air Force's core competency is supposed to be fighting wars from the air.  Space is an entirely different domain of operation, which is why a military branch dedicated to space-based operations should exist.

DENVER (AP) — The Department of Defense's inspector general announced Friday that it was reviewing the Trump administration's last-minute decision to relocate U.S. Space Command from Colorado to Alabama.

The decision on Jan. 13, one week before Trump left office, blindsided Colorado officials and raised questions of political retaliation. Trump had hinted at a Colorado Springs rally in 2020 that the command would stay at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.

The gist of the article is that there is a significant level of opposition to the last minute move order to Alabama.

59 years ago today, the US set off Starfish Prime, the largest nuclear weapon ever exploded in space. It created an EMP that knocked out electronics across Hawaii & damaged or destroyed up to a third of the satellites in low-Earth orbit.

Re: Trump Proposes U.S. ‘Space Force’ to Guard the Galaxy

Reports say on twitter that Chinese did some kind of Space-Force missile, China tested hypersonic missile capability, which it proved this ability by testing a new hypersonic missile that went around the globe before it approached its intended target.
https://metro.co.uk/2021/10/17/china-fi … -15437138/
Hypersonic weapons, meanwhile, can reach targets more quickly and are manoeuvrable.

' At a 2019 parade, China showcased advancing weaponry including its hypersonic missile, known as the DF-17, but it is unclear if this was the same missile.
China’s ministry of defence did not immediately respond to a request for comment.'

A question regarding this technology: are not all long range ballistic missiles hypersonic?  What differentiates this technology from say a liquid propellant ICBM like the Titan?  These rocket vehicles can put a delivery bus on a suborbital trajectory that reaches almost orbital speeds.  Is such a device not a hypersonic weapon?  These devices are old technology, yet they can deliver warheads to the other side of the world within an hour if needs be.  Likewise, solid propellant rocket or solid fuel ram jet propelled ordnance can reach high supersonic speed.  There is nothing cutting edge about these things either.  What exactly are these much discussed hypersonic weapons and what makes them different to past delivery systems?

Re: Trump Proposes U.S. ‘Space Force’ to Guard the Galaxy

For Calliban re #96

That's a fair question, and I am hoping it will attract helpful replies.

I'll attempt to start out with an observation that maneuverability of vehicles varies from zero to some level.  The early ballistic missiles you described are thought of as having little maneuverability, although I'm hoping someone with actual experience in the field can shed light on their capability.

The Space Shuttle was noteworthy for advances in the art of maneuverability, but even there the "flying" capability appears to have come into play mostly when the vehicle was NOT hypersonic.

My guess is that the competitors in the field of hypersonic maneuverability (China is just one) are attempting to evade countermeasures by maneuvering while the vehicle is still hypersonic.

Japan, Australia condemn Russia for ‘irresponsible’ anti-satellite missile test

https://spacenews.com/japan-australia-c … sile-test/

Japan and Australia have joined international condemnation of Russia for testing an anti-satellite weapon Nov. 15 that created over 1,500 pieces of debris in low Earth orbit.

In a Nov. 18 statement, Japan’s foreign ministry called the test “an irresponsible behavior that undermines sustainable and stable use of outer space.” The ministry said the test also “runs counter to the Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines” adopted unanimously by the member states of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), including Russia, in 2007. The guidelines require that member states avoid the intentional destruction of any on-orbit space objects that can generate long-lived space debris, the ministry noted.

“The Government of Japan expresses concerns towards the test and calls upon the Government of Russia not to conduct this kind of test in the future,” it said.

SpaceNut,

The Russians and Chinese are weaponizing space, whether anyone wants them to or not.  Therefore, it's in America's best interest to at least try to maintain similar capabilities, so that the Russians and Chinese don't get the idea that they can do whatever they want in space without consequence.  America should have its own anti-satellite weapons, lasers, and kinetic energy weapons to deter potential aggressors.
