Re: Martian Olympics

In MY 50, the city-states of Mars decide to celebrate half a century of successful settlement and expansion with an olympic-style competition featuring athletes from all over Mars.

What are the events?

Re: Martian Olympics

lol

There wont be that many people on mars by MY 50 (assuming MY 0 is first landing), therell still probably be only one real colony, with a spattering of small outposts.

But hey, im no party pooper, i get the idea.

What about skiing/snowboarding events on artificially created  carbon-dioxide powder snow. No chance of it melting at least! Of course you ll need some pretty tough and flexible pressure suits, but it will be MY 50!

Im not sure how feasible the track events might be?!?!?!

All the field events!

hmmm
Ill have a better think about it then get back.

Re: Martian Olympics

How about the pole vault or discuss or something? They'd be pretty wicked.

Shooting maybe, better accuracy in the low g.
Dunno ay, there are lots of sports that would be cool in a Mars environment.
Cool in both sences of the word, imagine sumo wrestling or something. *shivers*

But wouldn't it be dangerous? Your enviro-suit thingy could break, but I suppose they would design ones especially for the different sports.

Do you think the "sports suits" will be a technology driver?

And what about indoor events? Do you think any sports will be invented for inside the habs?

Re: Martian Olympics

Yeah, I reckon; sport suits will be designed for mobility and strength so enviro-suits could be improved by taking elements out of the sport suits. Maybe a new age of designer clothing: The latest Nike enviro-suit, the latest and greatest in finesse, strength and style.

Indoor events?
Hmm, probably depends on the space available, but I'm sure people will come up with games and stuff to do around the hab. Like that game in KSR's Red Mars on the Ares where they push themselves and see how far they float down the corridor with the zero-g.

But I reckon Mars will be the place to be for extreme sports. Imagine absailing down Vallis Marineris, that'd be awesome!!

Re: Martian Olympics

Martian Olympics would probably be scoffed at by Terrans, simply because the tasks in and of themselves would be potentially easier.

Assuming we did have such an event, though, I can't imagine it possible being played in suits. Are our theaters outdoors, too? Everyone has to wear a suit just to watch a few people do some dangerous poll-volt in a near vaccume protected by a suit with questionable maneuverability (I doubt we can get vaccum-surviving suits good enough to do a pole-volt effectively, but I'd love to be proved wrong)? I suspect we wouldn't even have Olympics until we've done some relatively good colonization, and by that time we ought to have domes. It'd be good to celebrate the first dome with an Olympics of sorts.

One things for sure, though, no matter what sports we do decide to do, the various game accessories will be heavier, bigger, etc, to suit the low-g and make tasks harder. For example, I can see balls being much heavier.

Can you imagine golfing on Mars with regular balls? You could potentially hit a ball several kilometers without much effort. Of course, I don't think golfing is an Olympic sport, but just imagine discus throwing or whatever. The poll-volt would need to be made to be much higher.

Re: Martian Olympics

Basketball

20 foot baskets and courts twice the length and width of current NBA dimensions. Imagine a Shaq attack slam dunk on a 20 foot basket.

All inside an inflated dome perhaps attached to the walls of a small crater.

IMHO - domes will be very easy to build, if they are inflated rather than rigid structures. Multiple layers of rip stop fabric with layers of self sealing foam to auto-repair small punctures.

What such domes might lack is radiation shielding. Add tubes to fill with water and then allow to freeze. Adds weight but also adds rigidity and water is an excellent radiation shield.

Re: Martian Olympics

I think there will be a big interest in cross-country events. The huge, open, potentiall lethal spaces out there will have a big pychological impact on people.

Events where they race against each other on foot (orientearing style) between colonies maybe, or maybe in special rugged rovers would be a big draw for people i imagine.

Perhaps Cyborg racing enhanced animals or Non human events

Maybe there will be flying animals in a colony, bee pollinators would be useful but not sure about bird racing as they might fly up and away and escape to some far away part of the Biodome or might be a nuisance pooping on stuff.

Humans might be enhanced as they are in Paralympic games on Earth

Ancient Greeks, it was important to root the Olympic Games in mythology, games coming to an end under Theodosius II, possibly in connection with a fire that burned down the temple of the Olympian Zeus during his reign.

Rugby League World Cup: Southern hemisphere to host tournament in 2026 after France withdrawal
https://www.skysports.com/rugby-league/ … withdrawal

An Athlete that is a normal human but born on Earth would have an advantage to a normal human athlete born on Mars

To keep a body health on a Station exercising for Approximately two hours per day

Physical activity is the most effective way to counteract the adverse effects of weightlessness on the human body. Exercise is therefore a crucial part of the daily routine on board the International Space Station (ISS). Over the course of a long-duration mission, astronauts must exercise approximately two hours per day!
https://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronaut … -space.asp

ESA kids 2011

If you don’t like exercise, then life on a space station is not for you! Each crew member on the International Space Station (ISS) will spend up to two hours a day on various exercise machines. All of this effort is essential to counteract the physical decline that occurs during long space flights. It also makes it easier for astronauts to re-adapt to normal gravity when they return to Earth.

https://www.esa.int/kids/en/learn/Life_ … e/Exercise

The treadmills are used to simulate walking and running in normal gravity. The cycle can be used to exercise arms or legs. The resistive exercise device is rather like weightlifting on Earth. It allows the user to complete a series of physical exercises while restrained by elastic bungee cords. A portable computer monitors heart rate and other vital signs while the astronauts are using the machines.

'Sports' events inside a Mars biodome might show off the Lower Gravity of Mars.

I think Mars might have its own unique sports just as 'Cricket' is unique to the British political sphere or a unique popular sport among former Empire colonies or British also have events such as falling down hills, Hill Cheese-Rolling or lawnmower racing. US Baseball is unique to the US cultural Empire or US sphere of influence or how nations have their own sport just as Japan has Judo, Karate, Sumo, Kendo and other nations have their own unique 'sport' or the crazy Italian sport of Calcio Fiorentino a cross between Rugby, Football and Boxing all at the same time. You have Bull Riding in the US a rodeo sport surviving and staying on a bucking bull for as long as possible or Running of the Bulls in Spain where brave and sometimes foolish people are gored cruelly or the newly made Jokgu Korean which seems to have old roots but is mostly a fusion of new sports, if a Mars colony has Farms then perhaps a New Zealand culture can teach something unique the Golden Shears a Sheep Shearing Championship.

and if politics and jihad religion enter the idea of 'Sport' the Iranian team, refused to contest a heat evidently because of the presence of an Israeli athlete, Iran judoka, forced to throw match to avoid Israeli,  German news recently reported the regime in Tehran has backed off on a plan to impose a formal ban on Iranian athletes competing against Israelis. On Earth women on the run or under threats because of headscarves rules, the Missing Iranian climber dropped headscarf by mistake.

The true history of sports is part of our pre-history, before our recordings it seems there is evidence that mankind had conest rituals, the sport game extends back to the Ancient world, in our future the first Sport offworld might be not be humans but Robotic Rovers racing. The early sports of running, wrestling, throwing are probably related to ancient military training to show off what athelte and teams of your culture were 'The Best' Egyptian, China, Arabia, events where people 'fought' in a friendly contest without war then made famous by Greeks. Rome was known for its violence, sporting battles continued Europe was not immediately devoid of sports from the Roman Empire after it collapsed, the Chariot became Jousting. A period were life gets better and after the Dark Ages in Europe and the Arts and Literature reborn the late middle ages, early modern sports became less of a violent contest, Boxing, Horse Racing, Wrestling still survive today, I wonder with Ultimate Fighting and Mixed Martial Arts did we enter a period of less rules and more extreme violence again like in Rome. Other sports are more 'civilized' although people can get hurt in any sport. Politics can influence or help or damage sports in China for a while Sport was considered bad and Anti-Communist, the USA and Russia have at times boycotted each others games.
Norway has consistently dominated Gold medals at the Winter Olympic Games beating both United States (USA) and Russia or Soviet Union's Gold Medal Counts, but sometimes the USA or Russia or Germany or France will beat Norway, perhaps living on the ice gives them an advantage. The United States, Soviet Union, the French, the British, Germany, Italy, China, Sweden, Japan, Norway, Australia, Canada are considered to be 'Sporting Nations' large populations like India, Pakistan, Indonesia or somewhat large population like Egypt or Algeria do not win medals despite their population size,  the new Russia under Putin wins less medals than it did under the Soviet Union, there are rumors East Germany were taking drugs, cheating States getting medals by way of doping. New Zealand, Cuba, Bulgaria, Kenya, Poland, Jamaica, Greece seem to get a lot of medals despite having a small population size, some asked if there was a genetic element cultures which did not use the Horse or Carriages, the feet of a small region of Africa suitable for running the Marathon - the genetical element to the feet and running elite from Kenya and Ethiopia. In Swimming a Wooly type hair science papers say there is evidence to suggest that black African men and women are less buoyant than white European men and women. The world’s second most popular sport, right after soccer is 'Cricket' perhaps left over from the British Empire going to India, Australia, South Africa, 'The West Indies' representing the mainly English-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean.

Perhaps sports was a way for Athletes to have a friendly sort of fight in a sporting contest, a competition without any 'war. I don't know if Mars sports will be smaller indoor locations or outdoor sports, indoor Cycling contests are one of the favorite sports in many regions on Earth, but if you had an outdoor suit you could perhaps put Cycling or a type of Golf, Snow golf, Beach golf, Croquet,  parku gorufu of Japan or Miniature golf or maybe a Truck race or Motorsport as an outdoor sport on Mars.

The most global game is probably a type of Soccer or Football so naturally some form of kicking and ball would spread to Mars.

Politically it did not look good in the last Olympics, lock downs with Covid.
In the USA there was a lot of BLM Antifa politics entering sport, taking Knees for George Floyd and perhaps 'Rioters'.

Can such protest happen, I don't imagine a country sending an athlete, a prima donna attitude all the way to Mars just from them to trash their own nation and flag but maybe it happens? A sport like Rugby, these guys seem to Love Playing such an aggressive passionate sport but I can not imagine them singing for their team or country.

Why cricket is having a resurgence in popularity in America
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/why-c … in-america

I'm not sure how it would work after Colonization maybe every 8 years there would be a Mars Olympics, the Athlete might spend 6 months or 1 year adjusting to conditions, Mars and Earth line up and are the closest to each other every 780 days, or about every two years the alignment occurs every 1.135 Mars years.

Would boat racing get banned? Lakes on Mars will be few even inside controlled biosphere, there might be a protest against using a Biodome Lake for a Boat Race when it might be important to keep a colony alive. On Mars you will have mostly sandy clay but maybe some type of tarmac or plastic pitch or indoor arena or maybe natural 'grass' inside a biosphere or ice. The Olympic biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, many football games are played on grass.

Soccer is more popular then NFL although I think watching Soccer can be somewhat 'boring' the NFL has played games outside the United States in several countries maybe its the need for equipment that makes it less popular. However I think 'grass' and water-ice would be too precious a resource to waste on a Mars sport or entertainment when they might be vital for keeping a Martian colony alive. The person born and raised on Earth will be stronger than a person on Mars, in regard to population and medals there is no connection on Earth, for example India's population to medal ratio in the Olympics is 0.0008, which is very low and Iraq and Sudan follow India with a population to Olympic medal ratio of 0.0017 and 0.0019 respectively. However, there is no correlation between the population size and medals won by a country. The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, an island country of the West Indies in the North Atlantic and the cold country of Finland are high medal winners, the Bahamas has the highest medal to population ratio of 2.31, and is followed by Finland. Mars might develop its own sport unique to regions on Earth, Basque pelota the name for a variety of court sports played with a ball using one's hand, a racket against a wall, the Aussie Rules Football, if culture from New Hampshire is a state in the New England arrives on Mars or Scotland then maybe Caber toss or Hammer throw Highland-games, if Chinese culture were to arrive maybe a form of Kungfu might be the 'sport' like Boxing, Judo or Kick boxing are popular games with a high population and limited land use over 70% of china’s land reserve is either forest or hill. And the rest 30% is what houses its colossal population then smaller games with smaller indoor rooms became popular, Table Tennis or Ping Pong, also Snooker or pool or, more specifically, billiards, are also popular in China. If Russian culture was on Mars maybe influences from Olympic Gymnastics, Ice hockey, Volleyball, Figure skating, Wrestling, Team Synchronized aesthetic group gymnastics, Trampolining and other more classic games. If Japan culture goes to Mars maybe Sumo, or Karate or Judo, and modern kendo would become part of Mars culture including their modern events Japanese-American Baseball or 'Rugby' type sport, if you were to play a type of Golf on Mars would it be played outdoor in a special suit? Would people with enhancement or Cyborgs be banned from contests, the person coming from Earth would perhaps have an unfair advantage while a person born on the Moon of Earth might suffer to keep up. Perhaps a type of Tennis like sport or Floorball a type of floor hockey could be played in the sand and clay or something like the 'Beach' sports on Earth. News sports are created all the time for example in Thailand a foreign invented sport Teqball is growing in popularity, a ball sport that is played on a curved table, combining elements of sepak takraw, kick volley ball, martial arts and table tennis. Back and forth, the Thai players happily play a game hit a football with any part of the body except arms and hands, there are similar game on the Indian Sub Continent. Maybe a Space-suit would be used and some sports taken outside like 'Pole-vault' or a Shot-put type event?

India, however, consistently foils the trend that countries with large populations end up with many medals. In 2016, it only won two medals, meaning one medal for just over half a billion people. The country has historically been one of the worst-faring Olympic nations by population.

For now I think it will be a Robot Car race in offworld sports.

How The Olympic Medal Table Explains The World
https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-olym … -the-world

Imagine a Martian trying to make sense of this world, and the only available data are the Summer Olympic medal tables from the past century.

And much more. For starters, you can tell instantly when the two world wars were raging, forcing the cancellation of the Olympics in 1916, 1940 and 1944.

Another point that leaps out is the remarkable consistency of the U.S. compared with other leading nations. The U.S. routinely won 15% to 20% of the medals awarded during most of the 20th century.

Re: Martian Olympics

Logically it would seem sports would confine to smaller spaces, no Sport that has a large green field or boat on Ocean Sea will be on Mars.
Animals or Humans will dominate the Sports event?

https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/15017197

Maybe all kinds of animals will be on Mars, I'm not sure why you would have a Cat or a Jack Russell Terrier on Mars, maybe for companionship on Earth they were used as ratting dogs to keep farm produce safe, then dogs became pets and now a little dog used competing in a dog agility event. Sheep Racing, Dachshund Racing, Ostrich Racing, Hamster Racing a type of rodent races inside miniature vehicles. Also Goat Racing but I believe they tie a rope around the Goat in Africa or Caribbean islands and whip it as it is difficult to command a Goat to do anything and Camel Races are other such Animal Race events. On Earth there is also Rabbit Show Jumping, Elephant Soccer, Scotland Island 500 — Sydney's annual aquatic dog race, Cane Toad Racing or jumps, Ban'ei — a Japanese horse race.

How cells could help Artemis astronauts exercise
https://phys.org/news/2023-01-cells-art … nauts.html

Boppart and her colleagues began investigating the regenerative power of cells for space exploration in response to a Biomedical Research Advances for Space Health (BRASH) solicitation by the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH)—an institute funded by the NASA Human Research Program. The institute asked researchers to investigate new methods for ensuring astronaut health and performance by enhancing the human body's own maintenance and cellular repair abilities. These methods, they stated, would become part of long-duration exploration missions, including NASA's Artemis program and future crewed missions to Mars.
