Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1001

Thanks for confirming AllisonZim's ID has a new home !!!

Thanks too for the marching orders ...

I agree that already banned ID's are the logical next group to tackle.

I am running into unexpected complications as i try to upgrade from Level 0 to Level 1

It's going to take longer than I had optimistically thought ...

On the other hand, those ID's aren't going anywhere ....

***
It's ** really ** fun seeing the substantial interactions on the forum recently !!!

I'm (of course) encouraged by GW Johnson's continuing interest in the Ballistic Delivery concept, and hope there is a solution that reveals a practical answer to the question posed by Void so long (it seems) ago.

Most strafing runs in human history (that ** I ** know about) involve forward delivery of "packages.  Some are impelled by gunpowder (or equivalent) and some are impelled by solid fuel for onboard rocket engines, but ** all ** are designed to move toward the objective with greater velocity than the vehicle.

If GW Johnson decides there ** is ** a "sweet spot" where the delivery vehicle can get back to orbit with 245 ISP fuel/oxidizer, ** and ** the payload can be delivered precisely onto the designated receiving zone at a velocity under 500 mph, then the ** only ** not recoverable expense will be the solid rocket and perhaps it's control electronics, although even that may survive, if human ballistics experience is a guide.

Edit#1 .... there is ** one ** notable exception to the general rule given above ... for many years, loads have been dropped off aircraft for (relatively) gentle landings supported by parachutes.  That model does apply to Mars, because it's been used successfully for numerous landers, but it's not applicable in this topic.  On the ** other ** hand, the retro-rocket final landing phase for most (if not all) successful landings is a model for what may end up as part of a cost effective solution for package delivery on Mars.

***

Meanwhile the Settlement topic is accumulating packets of wisdom at a remarkable pace.

There may be enough of a treasure trove accumulating there to justify another inquiry of Mars Society for a Wiki-like repository for the accumulated wisdom/advice.

I have not heard anything from anyone over in the Mars Society, so assume we are not yet visible to them.

Hopefully the energy created by Noah's arrival will help to attract interest.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

Starting with the Bans table means there are a few more hoops for the program to jump ...

On the ** other ** hand, it will be working with ID's already banned

I still need to confirm the ID from the Bans table has no posts

It may be possible to run a query for Zero Posts using the ID from the Bans table.

If the ID shows up in the Zero Posts query then conversion can proceed.

here is the first draft of procedure to get to the User Profile page from the Bans table ...

***

Given DESC Banks query 70 pages

22 tabs to Banned By field

ZZYAutumn7 <<== I got this by selecting Edit

#    Record the clipboard for investigation later if needed
#
#    Now tab to the username field in the search results
#
Ctrl/l
Tab:20
Enter
Wait:5000

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1004

OK ... we have a mismatch at work here << grin >>

I ** think ** I understand why you offered the query that shows all users with 0 posts .... Right in the middle of it appears the word "banned" under Title

However, the program has no way of "seeing" that information!  The field is visual, so we ** humans ** can see it.

However, the computer can only work with data it can pull out of a form, and basically, that is anything that can be highlighted.

If you enter Control L, you'll see the address bar of your browser "light up" ... it is available to be copied to the clipboard as text, using Control C.

At that point, the program can "see" the data!

In the case of the query that finds Users with Zero posts, the "banned" title is in a location that cannot be highlighted, so it cannot be copied to the clipboard, and therefore cannot be made "visible" to the program.

***
There ** is ** a way to read a screen using mouse movements, and those are among the 120 commands of AACKeys I have ** not ** learned how to use.

The best solution at the present state of development of WBA, is to find a query that delivers records that you want it to work with.

In the case of the query that shows User ID's that have zero posts, we do NOT know which of those are banned, because the query has not selected based upon whether the ID is banned or not.  The query ** does ** a lookup against the bans table to show the banned title, but it does not select based upon that value.

Likewise, the query does not select based upon the Registration date and the Last_Visit date being the same.

In the example I gave you, I started with the Bans table, because you indicated you wanted me to concentrate there.  However, the Bans table contains no information about the number of posts, the registration date, or the Last_Visit date.

In the little snippet I posted most recently, I showed how the program can start with the Bans query, and make it's way to the ID to be processed, by following the data it can "see".

In the process, I've uncovered additional functionality I need to add.

All of this is necessary because we do not have a query able to select just the records you want processed ...

1) Zero posts
2) Banned
3) Registration date = Last_Visit date

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... I have difficulty imagining anyone else finds this interesting, and I am not even sure of SpaceNut << grin >>

Overnight, as I contemplated the evolution of WBA as a primitive Level 1 automation project, it came to me that I am on the verge of re-inventing Dartmouth Basic, or perhaps one of the Unix Shells, or perhaps a subset of Powershell.

In order to handle the environment of FluxBB, and the multiple queries that must be run to find information needed to make decisions, I'm contemplating creating variables for storage (similar to a calculator) and IF-Then-Else constructs for implementing those decisions

Perhaps there is already in existence an interpreted language that can fulfill the requirements of this application.

AACKeys.exe itself ** is ** an interpreter that can be used by anyone able to code a simple script (although to date I've only mastered ** one ** of the 120 commands that are available, not including permutations).

However, AACKeys only provides an interpreted solution for the interface with the browser.  A second tier of interaction is involved in working with whatever the server behind the browser is willing to provide.

***
If anyone is still reading at this point, I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has knowledge of or experience with an interpreted script-style language that includes decision making, value storage and the ability to send data out an output port and receive via the clipboard.

It would be a shame (from my point of view) to re-invent something that's already half a century old.

Edit#1: And to cover all bases, if anyone in the non-member readership is interested in making a contribution, the NewMars portal is:

The earlier post about re-inventing interpreted Basic inspired me to ask Google if Powershell can write to a serial port...

The answer appears to be ** yes **

However, a Powershell editor is recommended, so you can browse through objects, objects properties and object functions. You're now able to write a more advanced script to communicate using the ActiveXperts Serial Port Component.

Update received from Visman at FluxBB.org .... there exists NO query able to find records with registered date equal to last_visit date.

Obviously the programmers who support FluxBB.org ** could ** create such a query, but it would have to be included in a future release of FluxBB.

Such a query is "privileged" at a level above even Administrator, so it cannot be created **by** an Administrator.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1009

Thanks for good news your Brother is home, and hope his recovery continues there, with family at hand for support!

If you can find a way to corral the records you want, we wouldn't need to highlight the fields.

However, in the absence of that, which seems likely, queries that can fetch those fields for a user ID of interest would be helpful, because the data would all be laid out in the same row, which would make highlighting that row easier.

At things stand, I will have to learn how to use the mouse control commands to locate the fields of interest, and ** then ** learn how to highlight the fields with simulated mouse movements.  i have no doubt it can be done, but a query would sure speed things up!

***
Please note the draft script I posted contains a number of errors which I found after taking the time to concentrate on it this evening.  It was intended to give you a sense of what the work looks like, and not to serve as the basis of anything.

Re: Housekeeping

From playing with the field page and seeing if I could make a zero post a field it appears that the script will not allow for the display function which seems to start with the from %5Busername%5D=(&form) was an empty field in the ( ) with this one %5Busername%5D=AL*&form
had the AL* in the box for entry

Then it changes to a string function after the Admin Note box...

entry was made with the 1 in the less than box
5D=&posts_greater=&posts_less=1&last_post_after=&last_post_before=&last_visit_after=&last_visit_before=&registered_after=&registered_before=&order_by=username&direction=ASC&user_group=-1&find_user=Submit+search

15 was entered into the box
5D=&posts_greater=&posts_less=15

Thanks for participating in discovery of what is possible with FluxBB!

Later today I'm going to experiment with Ctrl/A Ctrl/C  ... It may be possible to capture the entire Profile Page in text.

If so, then I can make short work of pulling the needed data from the mash of text.  I'll let you know.

***
Meantime, I'd appreciate your help thinking through a possible option for you and the group:

From a recent email to Noah...

Hi Noah,

This is a follow up to our preliminary discussion of (possibly) creating a means for NewMars members to support students like yourself by taking an interest in their academic progress, and later in the development of their careers.

This is all in the context of my expectation that the people who will be settling Mars are alive (and most in school) today.  Furthermore, the people who will be building the businesses that support the explorers from here on Earth are in the same cohort.

There is a potential for us (forum) to provide something I never got, and which (I suspect) few humans ever get .... an interested group following progress of a student, and perhaps pitching in a comment or bit of advice now and then.

If we can build this properly, the students themselves could become a self-reinforcing community.

Thanks for putting 4458 safely into it's little nest, ready to develop into a ** real ** member some day, perhaps far in the future, but ** some ** day!

This post is reserved for updates on changes to WBA to implement all the updates needed to implement Level 1.

This first version will ONLY be able to work with a query that contains (or delivers) records that meet the criteria we've agreed upon.

It will halt for any of a great number of reasons, including posts > 0, or dates different.

For that reason it will run for only a brief time before it halts.  At that point, the next level of enhancement will be needed.

Today is the day of the local monthly 3D printer meeting, and I need to spend ** some ** time preparing.  On the other hand, I'm chafing at the bit to try to get Level 1 of WBA working, so it will be interesting (to me at least) to see how ** that ** race turns out.

Over in Noah's Settlement Design topic, I offered a suggestion that we (you and I and anyone else interested)  attempt to reach Mars Society to seek assistance in setting up a permanent repository of knowledge so painfully accumulated in this forum, and then allowed to fade into the mists of time as the posts flow out of immediate view.

I was surprised by what appears to be an objection from kbd512, so I'm hoping to find out what is going on there.

In the mean time, please continue thinking about how we (forum and Mars Society) can provide a repository for the knowledge Noah and his team will be assembling on the subject of Settlement Design.  Argument is a method for retiring Ignorance.  After ignorance is reduced to some minimum, there should be no further need for argument.

Instead, the fading of memory comes to the fore as the aspect of entropy most likely to prevent progress.

Here is a work plan I'll be using today:

# Dim strClipboard(11) default
#    Add option on form to increase array size for both arrays
# Storage Assignments:
# Clipboard1: The Name of the User to be upgraded
# Clipboard2: The new User Name (eg, TestID#####)
# Clipboard3: The new email address (eg, testid#####@test.com)
# Clipboard4: The full Profile page text with Posts and dates

Re: Housekeeping

Thanks (th), ricardotore has not stepped over the line yet but its a wait and see game. Created new topic for the post and we can see what will happen after removing it from the other topic.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1017

Thank you for your patience with ricardotore ... he may well turn out to be willing to participate in the forum in some useful/helpful way.  Intruding on a topic with a post about something else is ** not ** a way to win friends.

However, that does bring up a point which I'd like to ask you to think about ... We need an "anything" topic, and the existing Chat arena may be a good place for it.  If a person has an idea and no idea where it fits in the Mars oriented structure of this forum, perhaps you (or another member ???) can suggest a place?

The "universe" of potential posters is down to a few hundred now, and that number will continue to shrink after the pruning of Bans completes, and we move on to unbanned non-posters.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... WBA update to Level 1 report ...

Installation of new code is about 50% complete ... The main piece (deals with Posts = 0 and Registration date - Last Visit date) is finished and ready for testing.

Some of the Clipboard functions are installed

The doctor next door hired someone to mow her grass yesterday, so I was inspired (Keep up with the Joneses) to mow my lawn today.  It was starting to look a bit longish out front, and going crazy out back, where I've planted gardens in past years and everything imaginable is competing for sunlight.

For SpaceNut ....

Quaoar just asked a terrific question (once again of GW Johnson) but it is in the Insight topic, and probably should be in another topic.

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 05#p178805

Is there another topic devoted to working on asteroids?  Calliban (for one) has invested a lot of thought in the general arena of asteroid mining.

Re: Housekeeping

It could be copied to the asteriod topics as well for anchoring to make it possible to mine.

Nice to hear you are making progress...

Thanks for the suggestions for Quaoar.

Meanwhile, GW Johnson replied, so the discussion may have wound down.

Please take a look at the post about the North Houston chapter of the National Space Society.

They've extended an invitation to make a presentation about NewMars.

I can't imagine anyone having more than 30 seconds to say about NewMars, but perhaps I'm just too close to the subject.

Re: Housekeeping

Some of what makes newmars in burried in the older posts of the forum by those that started in before I got here, that its admins have been from members that did post during that time...ect
Some of the members remember vaccumn tubes...use slide rules ect....education done right.....

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... indeed some of the members ** do ** remember vacuum tubes, slide rules, teletypes and other such ancient artifacts.

This post is reserved for what I ** hope ** will be the last set of work sessions to bring WBA up to Level 1.
I am ** definitely ** looking forward to a live test, to see what it can do.
***
I ** just ** added a feature to deal with the inevitable halt that ** will ** occur when the query offers a User ID which has posts > 0 or a date mismatch.

The program (as currently designed) will halt and the operator will have to study the log to see what happened.

To restart the program, it will be necessary for the operator to enter the Username that is next in line after the halt.  This means more code is needed, to loop through the query until the starting Username is found.  This will allow the run to start from the beginning, where a set of records without Username fields exist.

Edit#1: Taking a break ... the procedures for reading the script and loading the command array is in progress

A test run (with delivery of all output to the log) resulted in more error reports than I could count.  I printed the log and will study it later.

Chores await!

Re: Housekeeping

Sounds like a good work around for the possibilities that could be found as the data base crash will have mess up existing once same information to corrupter now after rebuild.

Came accross and old board game which many have played in Monopoly I am sure and with the advent of other versions of it I am wonder for a business op is we could create a Mars version?
Real estate would be crators, plains or plateaus, mountains or burried glaciers.
Utilities could be solar with batteries, solar to other storable, solar concentrated molten salt power generation, rtg's or kilowatt reactors, nuclear plant. geo thermal ect...some being re-estate related
Chance could be penalties, bonuses that effect energy, water, rovers upgrades or dust storms that cause a loss of a turn
All rovers start out being solar with wheels that degrade with turns around the board, getting community cards could up grade the rover to RTG. ect
I happened about this after seeing a local free paper discussing "how about A Dame of WinniOpoly? which is Lake Winnipesaukee in NH.

Here is a link for its article
https://thelaker.com/2021/winniopoly
actual product
https://www.gilfordcountrystore.com/winniopoly

Edit
Dice use starts out as a single di to roll for solar powered game pieces and once you upgrade to nuclear you get to use 2 di for each roll.
The di could can be reduced back to solar via a real bad chance draw.

More on the solar use vehicles versus nuclear game piece holder that can be the dust storm TAU and how the level reduces the dice roll movement as the a tau of 1 would reduce the single dice roll to a zero if you have a 1 on the dice. With increasing tau the roll gets less....

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1024

Well! That is a surprise!  Interesting idea, and interesting background.

This might be a good time to ? remind ? you that one of the Mars Convention videos was about games for people traveling to Mars and settling there.

You can find my write up on that by searching the Mars Convention topic for the word game.

The people who gave that presentation might be a suitable audience for a pitch.

I gave up trying to watch a video every other day ... daily life got in the way.

Work on the WBA is progressing but the number of errors to fix is commensurate with the number of changes needed to reach Level 1.

There is a state of mind that developers can enter (if they are lucky) called the "zone" .... everything else in the world blanks out for a while.

I have difficulty entering that state now, and it doesn't last long.
