Wiki

What is the chances of the wiki coming back? Is all the old data still available?

Re: Wiki

It is my understanding that the information on the wiki is in the same place as the posts from after 2008, meaning that there is some chance that it will come back but we're going to have to make do without, at least for the time being.

I googled it and noticed marspedia is up but it doesn't contain exactly the same stuff as the old wiki. I wonder if the phillosophy of marspedia will be the same as as the old wiki was.

Re: Wiki

I couldn't comment; If a sufficient number of articles are from the old wiki, I would imagine that it couldn't help but be.

Well, I did a little check. I see there was some stuff on greenhouses that looked somewhat similar but the section on greenhouse thermodynamics is gone, so I think that it is not a recovery of the old wiki (unless the philosophy has changed).

Re: Wiki

Even though as a newcomer, getting a Wiki concept for discussion is good in collecting all new or past discussion and resources of the same or similar topics on one or few webpages. For example, http://www.newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=442&p=12 the topic on terraforming Mars has been discussed here many times: a wiki webpage [[Terraforming of Mars]] would provide readers all information within multiple mouse clicks, not to mention the any other subpage or wiki links to relevant wiki webpage, say [[artificial magnetosphere]], [[silane]], [[Martian Transportation Infrastructure]] and so on.

See also,
http://www.newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=3693

Another idea is that instead of starting a wiki with human membership, how about implementing some bots ONLY USED FOR MINING AND CATEGORIZING INFORMATION FROM THIS DISCUSSION BOARD, then the wiki provides maintenance membership that allows human to write some articles from the collected information ?

Re: Wiki

I installed MediaWiki on http://newmars.com/wiki

I will slowly be restoring the wiki articles from places like https://web.archive.org/web/20090612204 … /Main_Page

Re: Wiki

Hi. I put the "Mars" page already. Will try to restore some more soon.

@jburk, any chance for a .htaccess to get rid of index.php and get the page's title directly (short URL), like wikipedia.org?

Re: Wiki

I took down the Wiki because for some reason the database was missing and the wiki page was throwing an error.  Not sure how long that has been the case, since I haven't checked it for a few months.  Also there was really minimal usage from the time I put it up in April until the error started.  As an aside, we don't have the older wiki content anywhere except on archive.org.

If anybody violently disagrees with this decision, please reply to this thread.

Re: Wiki

For jburk re #10

There is a need for permanent storage (with easy lookup) for work done by members of the NewMars forum.

It is possible the earlier Wiki attempt did not succeed because there was no one in the active membership who was able to invest the time needed to build it into a useful repository.  I can't guarantee I would be able to do the job better than someone else, but there is a decent chance I could tend it frequently enough it would begin to build value.

I do recommend that you set it up so the moderators and Administrators can maintain it.

It may be a while before you see this post.  I recognize you have a zillion greater responsibilities than looking after this forum.

Meanwhile, just FYI ... we are within ** days ** of completing a test run of a proposed Mars Calendar for Business, which was created through collaboration with RobertDyck (and others).  The proposed calendar has ** so ** much to recommend it, I am hoping it will find favor eventually.

A printed Mars calendar could have the Mars Society imprint, and it would have 24 images on each page of 28 days each.

There are four days with just 27 days (at the end of each quarter).

The absolute master stroke is the variable length Sol on the last day of the Martian Year.

That day is set to allow the business calendar to re-align with the astronomical calendar, down to the nanosecond.

Accordingly, the months are as regular as clockwork, and there is only ** one ** adjustment day in a Martian year.

Re: Wiki

For SpaceNut re #12

Thanks for your follow up.... nothing is available to members of this forum.

I'm calling for a (and requesting) a change in that situation.

We have a significant number of posts by long time members of this forum that have to be repeated every few months because new members arrive or existing ones forget the earlier work.

If there is a resource available, let's find out what it is and arrange to be able to use it.

Potential users/contributors include:

1) RobertDyck Large Ship
2) Calliban Ballistic Delivery
3) GW Johnson Orbital Mechanicx

No doubt there are many others I've either forgotten and have not yet seen.

Re: Wiki

If I recall the software was Drupal.php riding on the same sever along with the one for the analog stations and quite possibly that was what caused the crash...

We still need a server space, domain name quite possibly plus an admin as well as cash to pay for it all...

Lets continue to try to make companion pages and let the authors control the main page with the frontend message that points the way to the conversation pages as I have done with the Oldfart1939 topic of "Mars Expedition Number One; 17 crew members." as well was done with the other topic "Tutorial on the Nature of Heat as Applied to a Heat Shield" by tahanson43206

I will look to put a wiki folder if possible to move topics into that are the official wiki page but its still up to the writer of the page to do the work to get thoughts from conversation into the subject.
All topics can be broken back down into a starter post from the original while moving the remaining into a companion so that nothing is lost but its still work for the one that wants to champion a topic....

Re: Wiki

For SpaceNut re #15 and Wiki for NewMars ...

Thanks for your follow up ...

It sure looks as though JBurk tried to set up a Wiki for the forum members to use, and (apparently) no one took advantage of it.

Your suggestion to try the Primary/Companion format is worth attempting ... it doesn't require anything to be added to the system.

What it ** does ** require is a LOT of self discipline on the part of the members.

With the group currently in residence, that may actually work.

We may still "earn" a Wiki, but I suspect that it will be a while before anyone in Society management is willing to take a chance on this group.

Best wishes to Oldfart1939 for success with the 17 person landing party topic.

Best wishes to RobertDyck for success with Large Ship.

Best wishes to Noah for success with Settlement Design.

Re: Wiki

The wayback machine shows that the software was from https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

it also made use of the http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html

It looks like it started back in 2005 and we had these members working its content most if not all have not been back....
https://web.archive.org/web/20080427152 … on=history

this is the oldest crawled page
https://web.archive.org/web/20051125145 … /Main_Page

This is a linked page back to what the forum looked like back in 2005 suggests that we were up to 15 pages at 20 posts to the page.
https://web.archive.org/web/20070426152 … &start=240

holy crap the topic still exists here and I have my post per page set for 50 and there are 6 page tabs in view.
http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1027

The old forum software it would have needed to lock the topic as they would crash after the 300 post mark in the past

Re: Wiki

For SpaceNut re #17

You've outdone yourself << grin >>

I have to admit I was floored by the poetry that flourished in the early years!

I noticed with some dismay the section on Orbital Mechanics, which we have attempted to re-create in the present era.

Perhaps it's easier just to leave things as they are ... everyone just keeps repeating everything for new members.

Every day is a new day, with a clean slate upon which to write.

There's definitely something to be said for that.

Re: Wiki

Here it is still here Orbital Mechanics

The stub page on the wiki does not have all of the content placed onto it that could be there.

It would be a project to save up all of the pages and imbedded links to find out what content is still here such as the Zero energy trajectories - a thread to discuss this topic

We still have the issue of bringing back up on server space ect....

here is the wiki home page that shows how far they had gotten by 2006
https://web.archive.org/web/20061113234 … /Main_Page

The forums home page also looks quite different back then as well
https://web.archive.org/web/20061113071 … /index.php

Here is the forum discusion topic https://web.archive.org/web/20061126090 … php?t=3517

Found our page is still here in the newer look
http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=3517

The resurrected wiki page address is different now
