Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Earth: 2020/12/25 Friday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Today on Mars: 0035/23/13 Friday <<-- Days of the week are in alignment with those on Earth.  Earth December 29, 2020 next alignment estimate.

One day note:  Today is Day 4 of the Astronomical New Year on Earth

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 336.8   Sol Number: 626  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      336.3  Previous Sol: 625

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Note: The computations below are dependent upon the computations provided by the reference web site.  The reference web site is NOT reporting observations.  It is instead computing positions of the various objects by extrapolating from past observations.  Another factor is accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The web site display updates several times per second.

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   224,358,220 km Difference is +204720 <= 8124 km/hour at 10.3 on 12/24
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   224,153,500 km Difference is +191255 <= 8104 km/hour at 9.1 on 12/23
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   223,962,245 km Difference is +184721 <= 8102 km/hour at 9.5 on 12/22

Next up: Star TYC 617-589-1 Magnitude 10.88 Day 0 above and just ahead of Mars
Spiral galaxy IC 114 Magnitude 15.20 Day 1 Above and about 20 hours behind Mars
Star TYC 614-178-1 Magnitude 10.61 Day 2 Above path and about 36 hours behind - last day for 6f14

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 6 and 7 minutes. Communications delay would be 10+ minutes round trip. [6:120,000,000] [7:140,000,000]

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement continues.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 626 is in Month 23 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 23 extends from Sol 614 through 641. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 22
Direct path to source: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 57#p154257
Sol 626 is Friday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.  <<== Skip day occurred November 22nd, 2020 on Earth

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. Per www.planetary.org this will occur February 7, 2021 (Year 36)
The next Skip Day will occur in December on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Earth: 2020/12/30 Wednesday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Today on Mars: 0035/23/17 Tuesday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.  Earth February 5, 2021 next alignment estimate.

One day note:  Today is Day 9 of the Astronomical New Year on Earth . It is a Skip Day on Mars

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 339.5   Sol Number: 630  Change in degrees is +.5  <<== Skip Day
Previous SL:      339.0  Previous Sol: 630

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Note: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   225,520,130 km Difference is +199407 <= 8139 km/hour at 9.2 on 12/30
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   225,320,723 km Difference is +188828 <= 8139 km/hour at 8.7 on 12/29
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   225,131,895 km Difference is +196831 <= 8134 km/hour at 9.5 on 12/28
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   224,935,064 km Difference is +200044 <= 8132 km/hour at 9.3 on 12/27

Next up: Star tYC 624-564-1 Magnitude 10.10 Day 0 Just above path and just ahead of Mars
Star TYC 624-188-1 Magnitude 9.95 Just above path Day 1 About 12 hours behind

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 6 and 7 minutes. Communications delay would be 12+ minutes round trip.

Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement continues.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Earth: 2021/01/04 Monday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Today on Mars: 0035/23/22 Sunday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.  Earth February 5, 2021 next alignment estimate.

One day note:  Temperature at Naples Pier in Florida in USA on Earth is 72 degrees Fahrenheit at 13:44 on 2020/01/04 (Earth Calendar) per webcam

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 342.2   Sol Number: 635  Change in degrees is +.6
Previous SL:      341.6  Previous Sol: 634

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.  226325399 @ 12.1

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   226,536,220 km Difference is +210821 <= 8140 km/hour at 14.0 on 01/04
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   226,325,399 km Difference is +188103 <= 8143 km/hour at 12.1 on 01/03
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   226,137,296 km Difference is +241014 <= 8142 km/hour at 13.0 on 01/02

One day note: The km/hour figure was recomputed multiple times, and readings were taken at two different tenths. Mars has to begin to reduce the rate of departure from the Sun at some point, but it's not clear right now if that is happening, or if there are errors in computing the rate of movement.

Next up: HIP 8256 Magnitude 10.37 Day 0 Just below path and about 12 hours ahead
Star TYC 625-327-1 Magnitude 11.27 Day 1 just below 720
Star TYC 625-720-1 Magnitude 10.46 Day 1 just above path about 12 hours behind.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 6 and 7 minutes. Communications delay would be 12+ minutes round trip. [6:120,000,000] [7:150,000,000]

Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0035/23/27 Friday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.  Earth February 5, 2021 next alignment estimate.

Today on Earth: 2021/01/09 Saturday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

One day note:  Temperature at Naples Pier in Florida in USA on Earth is 56 degrees Fahrenheit at 9:32 on 2020/01/09 (Earth Calendar) per webcam

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 344.8   Sol Number: 640  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      344.3  Previous Sol: 639

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   227,475,422 km Difference is +214425 <= 8122 km/hour at 9.5 on 01/09 (time:9:30)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   227,260,997 km Difference is +174027 <= 8132 km/hour at 7.1 on 01/08 (time:7:06)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   227,086,970 km Difference is +199247 <= 8133 km/hour at 9.7 on 01/07 (time:9:42)

Next up: Star 629-634-1 Magnitude 10.47 In path Day 0 about 7 hours ahead
Star HIP 8827 Magnitude 7.02 Day 1 about 6 hours past Mars
Galaxy: IC 1743 Magnitude 13.90 well defined spirals Day 1 about 8 hours behind ... this may be the last day for 1743

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 6 and 7 minutes. Communications delay would be 12+ minutes round trip. [6:120,000,000] [7:150,000,000]

Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement continues.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

Sol 640 is Friday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.  <<== Skip day occurred November 22nd, 2020 on Earth

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. Per www.planetary.org this will occur February 7, 2021 (Year 36)
The next Skip Day will occur in February on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.

337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0035/24/04 Wednesday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.  Earth February 5, 2021 next alignment estimate.

Today on Earth: 2021/01/14 Thursday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

One day note:

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 347.4  Sol Number: 645  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      346.9  Previous Sol: 644

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   228,437,530 km Difference is +181233 <= 8090 km/hour at 8.2 on 01/14 (time:8:12)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   228,256,297 km Difference is +190273 <= 8096 km/hour at 9.8 on 01/13 (time:9:48)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   228,066,024 km Difference is +171160 <= 8112 km/hour at 10.3 on 01/12 (time:10:18)

Next up: Galaxy PGC 1437247 below path Day 0 About 10 hours ahead
A Boomer!  HIP 9533 Magnitude 5.84 Below path Day 1 about 7 hours past Mars - probably last day for 9533
Galaxy PGC 1429998 RA 2h 0m 276.0s just below path Day 2 at edge of view - definitely last day for 1429998

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 8 and 9 minutes. Communications delay would be 16+ minutes round trip. [8:144,000,000] [9:162,000,000]

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 645 is in Month 24 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 24 extends from Sol 642 through 668. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 22
Direct path to source: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 57#p154257
Sol 645 is Wednesday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.
