Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re ID Recovery project

This post is reserved for the next batch of ID's

The current Registered ID count is: 16,519

This total is 22 more than the previous count of 16,497.  I suspect that more than 24 hours was required to complete the upgrade of the lost accounts to Regular Member status.  Some database systems perform a daily batch job to take care of tasks like updating totals.  That may be true in the case of the NewMars database.

FluxBB.org is back online, or at least it responded to a ping request.

***

TestID01079 was processed from a Not Verified ID.  If my theory is correct, the count of 16,519 should increment one day after you perform your Administrative procedures.  The ID should be over in the bans table.

This gent's contributions seem worth a glance, all these years later.  It is also possible a follow up email would be in order.

Speaking of that .... there is an opening for a volunteer willing to take on responsibility for contacting members from long ago and far away.

SpaceNut and I have our hands full for the next two Earth years at least, cleaning up the mess created by our Russian (and other) friends.

If anyone is interested, please contact SpaceNut.

It is not necessary for the volunteer to be a Moderator ... The email address can be provided by SpaceNut, if it is not already visible in the member record.

I found scanning the thread from his post interesting, and hope other New Mars members (and readers ) will also:

At 13:24 local time, today's batch is only half way complete.  The number of registered members with posts was greater than usual, as compared to the number of banned ID's.

For SpaceNut re New Member application ...

The first phase seems to have gone reasonably well ... I used TestID01000 for the new account.

It is a question now (of course) if the FluxBB software will send a new password to the specified email account when the candidate tries to log in.

We'll just have to see.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re 329

The ID was one that had not been banned previously.

I was able to change the ID and the email address associated with it, but as  Moderator I was not able to remove the post itself.

Thanks for taking care of that.

I have good news! Our new member was able to log in at 15:57 local time today!

Because this was a recovered ID, the new member shows Registered 2013-10-18.

Last post is shown as 2013-10-19.  I assume that was the post that got the ID banned.

However, Last Visit is shown as today.

Edit#1: SpaceNut ... this would be your first of what I hope will be a number of invited members who (I hope) will bring talent and experience into the mix of our talented and experienced existing set of members.

Please start thinking about a topic that would be (could be) dedicated to some technical topic in which the new member may have expertise.

You won't know what that will be right now, but at some point you may be inspired to think of something appropriate.

Of course, the new member could attend to that.

For SpaceNut re #631

Thanks for taking care of today's ID's.

I only completed half a set today, after finding so many existing members in the group.

My original schedule had a day of slack built in so I'll use it to finish the batch tomorrow.

***
marc is going to be developing a design for a CPU that can be replicated by folks with the appropriate skill set and resources.

Let's start thinking about how we might be able to find such persons and enlist them to help with construction of prototypes and development of language elements.  It sounds (as I read marc's first post) that he is still designing hardware to go with assembler level instructions, so there would appear to be some time to think about how we might like to develop this in the context of the Mars Society, and future needs of Mars settlers.

The crucial question in my mind is whether the design is based upon chips that can realistically be fabricated early in the settlement of Mars.  If the answer is yes, then marc's design would seem ideal for development for that environment, aside from the military or robust industrial applications on Earth.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #634

Thanks for (a) taking care of the newly recovered ID's and (b) for the hint that there may be a procedure you can invoke to update the Registered Users counter!

FYI ... I'm trying to figure out if working on the Not Verified accounts would be more productive.  The step-by-step processing of banned ID's in alphabetical order is bogging down as the harvest of banned ID's becomes more scraggly, and the number of members from long ago and far away increases.

It takes longer to process the Not Verified ID's (because there are more steps), but the time per ID is fixed.

I will finish the "au" set I'm working on and then fill out the batch with Not Verified ID's tomorrow.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #638

Thanks for the neat forklift find in the IC topic!  It sure does paint a picture (for me at least) of a situation where tanks of liquid CO and a liquefied mix of O2 and CO2 are swapped in and out of machines in the field quickly and easily.  For a machine like a bulldozer, there could be a separate support vehicle that spends its time carrying tanks back and forth from the mining operation to the base camp.  My concept of an 8 hour shift for a bulldozer may not be practical, but it seems as though swapping tanks is a practical solution, and the capability of the company is limited only to the amount of energy available to make fuel and oxidizer.

The count of registered members did not increase from 16,520 following your procedures.  If my theory that there is a timed overnight batch process is correct, the number should increase within the next 24 hours.

Here's a post from 2003 that I found interesting .... it suggests an Alternate Future that didn't happen ...

Howard Dean: I am a strong supporter of NASA and every government program that furthers scientific research. I don't think we should close the shuttle program but I do believe that we should aggressively begin a program to have manned flights to Mars. This of course assumes that we can change Presidents so we can have a balanced budget again.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #642

Thanks for taking care of 1124-1144 ... this post is reserved for today's set: 1145-1166.  I'll try to do a mix of current and lost ID's.
Starting count is 16,534.

Two ID's are eligible to be recycled because they are banned. However, each has posts ...

If there is someone in the registered membership who will speak up for them, SpaceNut can unban them ...

If someone speaks up for Alex, SpaceNut can unban him.

This gent might be worth contacting. A lot has happened since 2005.

He should (I would imagine) be pleased to see what NASA (and other nations) have accomplished with unmanned probes.

In addition, I would imagine he would approve of Elon Musk and company, and their accomplishments and plans

The single posted showed bravery in tackling English as a second language, and a hint of ideas for Mars/Earth travel.

15 years have gone by, and it would (probably) be interesting to find out what this person is thinking today.

Re: Housekeeping

changed state of banned on the post for Alex and akwx128 and add note for locked or lacked of activity in the field but these that have not been active are for later to see if they are still with the email information or are not interested when we do get to that phase where we are doing more outreach and less on user data base and forum data correction.
I did blast the announcement in each of the Mars Society members area for each of the groups so we will see is there is any real interest or just spammers.

Did the unban and reset for the group of id's 1144 to 1166 that were converted and they are ready for use.

Thanks for taking care of 1167-1188 !!!  I hope this forum generates it's own "Best Of" ID's at some point

In the mean time, this post is reserved for today's batch: 1189-1210

Re: Housekeeping

Was able to unban and change the user table location for all of the ids' in group 1189 - 1210.

As for changing the size of the letter b to B is hard coded in the software for the php script that creates the word in the table.

After the forum conversion and all of the changes we did start to lose some members in the 2005 time frame until the great crash and I am hoping that in the outreach process we are able to gain them back.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #649

Thanks for working on 1189-1210 ....

The procedure of doing one Not Verified account per day seems to be working for you ... I like the benefit of seeing the Registered User count go up. The count today is 16,535, before starting today's batch.

Thanks too, for noting my comment that changing the display of users would help in finding the banned ID's.  As you probably have noticed, both words have the same number of letters, and they both display in exactly the same amount of physical space, so they are difficult to differentiate while scanning.

An alternative is to add color to the word "banned".  We might be able to ask Mr. Burk to install a modified version of the script.

I'll try to modify the script and run it in the command window, to see if it would work.

This member appears to have been working on a comic book idea, and asked NewMars for technical assistance.
This occurred after the member inquired about flapping wings as a possible flight mechanism for Mars.
We'll know soon enough if a helicopter concept will work at Mars.  A bee model might work inside a habitat.

The email address for this account implies an organization rather than an individual.

This member interacted with SpaceNut ... SpaceNut had cited them in a post, and apparently an Internet tool had reported the citation.

It seems to me this ID would be worth contacting ... for one thing, it should be possible to assist with setting up links.

If there is someone in the Registered Membership ** other ** than SpaceNut who has a bit of time available, this ID would appear to be worth a follow up.
