For SpaceNut re #601
Thanks for the list showing unverified accounts in addition to all the others.
I get a grand total of 19634 accounts, assuming the standard pagination of 50.
It seems possible (this is just a first impression) that perhaps some of the duplicate emails you're seeing occasionally may be due to the unverified accounts, which I have not been able to see until now.
At the rate of 22 accounts per day, that's going to take 2 1/2 Earth years to complete.
Good Grief!
If you feel up to it, please consider banning all the unverified applications for accounts.
I don't know if that will make them visible in the main User list, but it should allow them to show up in the banned list.
As an experiment, you could start with one account, to see what happens.

I was able to note the user %forum_nick% could be moved from the admin user list to the banned list and to the public by a group change function to newly registered and it now shows up...
verified that the "Total number of registered users: 16,494" stayed the same....
Did the same for this username 3aplus63Raf and stopped after getting it into the public list as well.

For SpaceNut re ID's recovery ...
First, thanks for moving those two ID's from Unverified to Banned!
The experiment was a complete success! I changed the names to Test format, and now the count of ID's increased from 16,494 to 16,496!
That is pretty neat!
It means that we have the full count of 19K+Id's available to be converted for use, and it also means it's going to take the full 2 1/2 Earth years to accomplish the transition, unless an automated system arrives on the scene, which certainly could happen, but I'm not counting on it.
It seems to me a program would be needed and not just a script, because the program would need to keep track of the current TestID#####, in addition to performing various checks along the way.
Python could probably handle the job fairly easily, but (to the best of my knowledge) we have no one in the group who is conversant with Python.
I know enough to know that Python is a powerful language that a younger person would do well to study.
I think it's going to be around for a while.

This is a request for your assistance with one ID ... I tried to replicate your success with the Not Verified ID's but did not succeed.
TestID00993 is now hung up ... it shows as banned, but it is NOT showing up as registered
I'll continue in the normal way with 994-1000 and let you know when those are ready for unbanning.
This ID was Aaron47846 ... it was changed to TestID00993 and Banned
It shows up in the ALL list as TestID00993 and banned, but it does NOT show up in the users table list.
There must be something special about the Administrator's touch ... I would appreciate your looking at it.

The count of registered users remains 16,496
There must have been something about the sequence that worked correctly.
You started the sequence by banning the ID's you chose for the experiment.
Following your initial step, the count of users remained 16,494.
I followed up by applying the normal rename procedure, and the ID's showed up in the registered list as 16,496.
Perhaps if you unban TestID00993 it will become "registered"
***
Today we reached a milestone ... 1000+ ID's have been recovered! 991-1013 are ready to be unbanned
Please see what you can do with TestID00993
I will (apparently) have to wait for you to process the Not Verified ID's ... sorry to have to ask for your assistance
The count of registered users remains 16,496
The count of banned ID pages remains 58

Went back in with the admin user list for the id993 and changed the user group to newly registered and it shows up now in the public user list.

First, thanks for the unbans through 1013!
Second, thanks for investigating that pesky 993 !!!
Please advise on how you want to proceed with the Not Verified ID's ...
It appears I can't carry out all the steps needed ...
We ** know ** that if you do the initial steps, I can perform the rename, and then you can perform the unban.
If you prefer, I can do as much as I can, and notify you of pending "invisible" items like 993.
That way, you'd only have to visit an ID once.
Please let me know ....
We have multiple thousands of ID's to process, so the less work for you the better, I would think.
22 ID's per day seems about right, from my perspective.

For SpaceNut re ID Recovery project ...
I am still looking for information about how a person moves from unverified to one of the verified groups ...
However, I found this today, and it suggests there only a small number of possible states the user records could be in ...
// Define a few commonly used constants
define('PUN_UNVERIFIED', 0);
define('PUN_ADMIN', 1);
define('PUN_MOD', 2);
define('PUN_GUEST', 3);
define('PUN_MEMBER', 4);
The Guest status above would apply to a login, so perhaps that should not be considered a possible state for a user record.

The guest is closed on this forum and removed from the group list but I am thinking that since I have seen the admin pages for these that more could be made but have not delved into that much so as to keep everything stable until we get all of the missing posts back...
I did alter the message invite panel in the requiting topic a bit...
will see how many characters it can have tomorrow....

Thanks too for your follow up message via NewMarsMember * gmail.com!
It's New Year's Even on Earth .... This is a time for optimism and hope that 2021 will bring at least one new contributing member to the NewMars forum.
I am grateful to be a part of the knowledgeable and creative group assembled here, and look forward to progress by members on multiple fronts during the coming year.
Among the most pressing needs (from my perspective) is to find out how to solidify contributions so they can become permanent resources for future Mars settlers. The Mars Wiki has potential to serve that role, and perhaps a pathway toward making edits there will open.
The work of recovering ID's should continue throughout the coming Earth year .... if your stamina holds up for that entire period, we should see 8030 ID's recovered. Along the way, we are sure to find more members from 2001-2008 whose contributions are worth bringing back into view.
Best wishes to all for success in your endeavors in 2021!

This post is reserved for today's batch: Through 1034
Total number of registered users: 16,496
Total number of topics: 7,492
Total number of posts: 171,492
The total number of registered users will increase over time, as lost ID's are recovered. The grand total should exceed 19,000 at some point.
Of those thousands, only a few are "real" people. The vast majority are spam ID's created primarily by our friends from Russia, or Ukraine, or Moldova.
As we go through this review and recovery, we are finding members from 2001 and later whose posts deserve another viewing, or at least mention in the current flow.

Thanks for your follow up on my question about the ID from Moldova .... Do you have a tool that would allow you to ban all those ID's from that city?
I'm content to chug along working with banned ID's. With 3,000 in the queue, it will be a while before they are exhausted.
What I ** can ** do is look up IP's on a Linux system, when the ID name looks suspicious.

Just FYI ... in honor of New Years Day on Earth, I'm thinking about working the Not Verified list tomorrow ...
I apologize in advance for the extra work this would impose on you, but there is no hurry for when you perform your finishing touches. I'm motivated by the opportunity to increase the "Registered User" count, now that we know it is possible.
If you would prefer I ** not ** do this, I'll check for instructions before starting work tomorrow.

For SpaceNut re ID's recovery project
This post is reserved for today's batch from 1035-1056
In addition, I'm planning to experiment again with trying to bring back the "lost" ID's (Not Verified)
The strategy I have in mind is limited by the capabilities given to a Moderator ... It appears I can "ban" them, which (apparently) creates a record in the bans table. I'm not clear (yet) on whether the procedure also updates the user record itself. It may not ... it may require an Administrator to do that.
At the start of today's session we have:
Total number of registered users: 16,497
Total number of topics: 7,492
Total number of posts: 171,538
Total pages of banned ID's 57
Total pages of users table: 393
Test procedure:
TestID01035 was created with a Not Verified ID and banned
The ID is no longer visible in the Users table
The ID showed up in the Banned table
I'll complete all of today's batch using this procedure
*** ID's 1035-1056 are reading for unbanning. They are all visible in the bans table.
After these are unbanned, the Registered User table count should increase.

Thank you for taking care of those (formerly lost) ID's!!!
They show up in the Registered User list just fine, after your finishing touches.
Because it takes a bit more time to process these, I'm not planning to do them every day.
However, it does appear you can handle them ok, although it sounds as though there is an extra step needed.
One surprise (for me for sure) was that the count of registered users did not change. It is still 16.497.
Apparently being in the "lost" (Not Verified) category does not mean they are not counted as "registered".

I won't add a post to the New Tech topic for this ... just a note of appreciation for contributing to the discussion of the new hardware design. I hope it eventually moves out of the development phase where it is now, but there is a ** lot ** of work ahead, to prove that theory will work with actual hardware!

The registered members of the forum can help by asking their local newspapers and online news sources to publish the notice you come up with.
Even guests of the forum who are interested in helping but do not necessarily want to engage at the level of registration can help, once you decide on the format of the advertisement you want to publish. Whatever text you decide upon needs to be approved by Dr. Zubrin (or an alternative with equivalent authority).
From having just listened to Dr. Zubrin's closing remarks (Video with current focus) I am confident he would appreciate your asking for approval of outreach wording. The announcement could be short like your existing announcement at the top of the home page for the forum, but I think it needs a few more words to show connection to the Mars Society and its global mission.
This is a repeat but since it is part of the current day's review, here it is again
