Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Earth: 2020/12/06 Sunday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Today on Mars:  0035/22/22 Sunday <<-- Days of the week are in alignment with those on Earth.  Earth December 29, 2020 next alignment estimate.

One day note:

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 11 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 330 degrees

Solar Longitude: 326.4   Sol Number: 607  Change is +.5 degrees
Previous SL:      325.9  Previous Sol: 606

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   220,882,882 km Difference is +192302 <= 7849 km/hour at 9.4 on 12/06
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   220,690,580 km Difference is +163480 <= 7860 km/hour at 8.9 on 12/05 (Start slowing?)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   220,527,100 km Difference is +202466 <= 7878 km/hour at 12.1 on 12/04 (Peak out rate?)

Next Up: Galaxy 1322423 RA 1h 8m 28.0s Day 0 just below path and well ahead > 30 hours
Galaxy PGC 1318215 RA 1h 6m 16.6s Day 1 Above path and at Mars
Star: HIP 5073 Magnitude 7.90 Day 2 past Mars just above path last day for HIP 5073

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 5 and 6 minutes. Communications delay would be 10+ minutes round trip.[5:90,000,000] [6:120,000,000]

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement comes to an end.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

Sol 607 is Sunday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.  <<== Skip day occurred November 22nd, 2020 on Earth

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in December on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

I noticed that INSIGHT is still not sending back any data and wondered if the planets opposition was being blocked by the sun but its not as seen on https://www.theplanetstoday.com/#
So I am wondering what happened to the lander?

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #860 ... This is the second time (that I noticed) you've reported that Insight is not sending data.

It might be helpful if someone could contact the Insight team at NASA.

However, for what it's worth ... the current Sol for Insight is reported to be 727 .... (Sols since Landing) (per Google)

The most recent image is from Sol 725, or only 2 Sols ago.

I deduce that the image transmission subsystem was still working that recently.

Is there a member of the forum who would be willing to find out what's going on?

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

This topic is sounding like a "business opportunity tahanson43206" as you are onto a watch designed for the consumer on mars wanting to keep in touch with those still here on earth. It would be simular to the timezone watches used here on earth with the day feature being add to know what it is on earth versus mars...

An app could be added to the App Store (all varieties) to perform the display of the two calendars simultaneously.  The app could even be programmed to alert the user when various Earth Holidays or special dates (such as birthdays of relatives or anniversaries of family events) come up.

I Agree this would definitely be a "business opportunity" for the bright young person who puts the bits together to make that happen.

However, the same concept could go the other way ... I'd been hoping to somehow persuade a calendar printer to offer a Mars calendar, starting in Mars Year 36, which will start next February (Earth time).  An App would be far less expensive and it would (could) reach a far greater audience.

By now NASA has accumulated a huge collection of very high quality images, and (I'm hoping) some sort of licensing arrangement might be possible to construct a calendar with a different image for each Mars Month.

That is even an idea that could be added to the daily Mars Calendar update on NewMars forum.  There are others here who specialize in images from Mars.

Today on Mars: 0035/23/04 Wednesday <<-- Days of the week are in alignment with those on Earth.  Earth December 29, 2020 next alignment estimate.

One day note:

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 332.0   Sol Number: 617  Change in degrees is +.6
Previous SL:      331.4  Previous Sol: 616

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note: The computations below are dependent upon the computations provided by the reference web site.  The reference web site is NOT reporting observations.  It is instead computing positions of the various objects by extrapolating from past observations.

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   222,792,570 km Difference is +178170 <= 8061 km/hour at 8.7 on 12/16
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   222,614,400 km Difference is +209270 <= 8018 km/hour at 10.6 on 12/15

Next up: Star HIP 6006 Magnitude 9.82 Above Mars Day 0 About 10 hours ahead
Star TYC 613-764-1 Magnitude 11.21 Day 1 In path about 3 hours behind
Galaxy PGC 1345891 RA 1h 16m 32.9s Day 2 Past Mars but so far below it will not be visible on screen tomorrow

Sol 622 is Monday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.  <<== Skip day occurred November 22nd, 2020 on Earth

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. Per www.planetary.org this will occur February 7, 2021 (Year 36)
The next Skip Day will occur in December on Earth.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

tumblr_inline_ohdbtnzI4P1tzhl5u_1280.jpg

Winter solstice we saw at 270' on Sep 02 2020 so the days are getting longer while the distance from the sun increases.

What is odd is the amount of solar in winter is higher but with the days time is short we do not see any really amount of mars warming.

While the summer day grows longer but the amount of solar striking the planet is dropping.

I think this is in the topic but if its not here it is https://www.planetary.org/articles/mars-calendar
