Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Earth: 2020/11/12 Thursday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Today on Mars:  Friday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.  Earth November 2020 next alignment estimate.

One day note: Today (in the Mars calendar) is the last Friday of Month 21

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 11 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 330 degrees

Solar Longitude: 312.8   Sol Number: 584  Change is +.6 degrees << The next Mars Skip day will occur (about) November 21st on Earth
Previous SL:      312.2  Previous Sol: 583

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   216,508,786 km Difference is +178367 <= 7192 km/hour at 8.7 on 11/12
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   216,330,419 km Difference is +170721 <= 7113 km/hour at 7.9 on 11/11
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   216,159,698 km Difference is +164921 <= 7108 km/hour at 7.9 on 11/10

Next up: Galaxy PBC 1278163 0 hours 56 minutes 6.7 seconds Day 1 +56 hours to right of curving path of Mars (The curve is bending East)
Galaxy PGC 1273509 0 hours 58 minutes 1.2 seconds Day 9 113+ hours past Mars - last day for 1273509

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is noticeably curving upward and now East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 4 and 5 minutes. Communications delay would be 8+ minutes round trip. [4:72,000,000] [5:90,000,000]

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.

The apparent position of Mars is moving West away from the reference star, albeit slowly, as Earth slides "under" Mars
Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 584 is in Month 21 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 21 extends from Sol 558 through 585. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 21

Sol 584 is Friday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in November on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

I was reminded of the present day seasonal out gassing of mars.

Tests on the Martian air show that background levels of methane rise and fall with the changing seasons. As winter gives way to summer in the northern hemisphere, the methane triples from 0.24 to 0.65 parts per billion.

Sol 589 is Wednesday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

Speaking of going backwards as the count down to the https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/ for FEB 18, 2021 is just 90 days away now.

The landing show is spectacular on the web page as it goes through its entry to slowing for the rover to be lowered by the sky crane.

The home page shows several stages to the rover landing

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Earth: 2020/11/29 Sunday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Today on Mars: 0035/22/15 Sunday <<-- Days of the week are in alignment with those on Earth.  Earth December 29, 2020 next alignment estimate.

One day note: The Sun is flooding the region on Earth where I live with light. This reminds me a light flooded room will be valued on Mars.

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 11 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 330 degrees

Solar Longitude: 322.5   Sol Number: 600  Change is +.5 degrees
Previous SL:      322.0  Previous Sol: 599

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   219,568,700 km Difference is +185140 <= 7714 km/hour at 9.3 on 11/29
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   219,383,560 km Difference is +171965 <= 7711 km/hour at 9.3 on 11/28
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   219,211,595 km Difference is +207715 <= 7665 km/hour at 11.0 on 11/27

Next up: Bright star HIP 4655 Magnitude 6 Day 2 Above Mars and abreast of the planet behind about 10 hours
Star HIP 4686 Magnitude 9.17 Day 3 just below path behind 30+ hours - Last day for HIP 4686

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is noticeably curving upward and East as seen from Earth

Light travel time is between 5 and 6 minutes. Communications delay would be 10+ minutes round trip.[5:90,000,000] [6:120,000,000]

Sol 600 is in Month 22 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 22 extends from Sol 586 through 613. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 22

Sol 600 is Sunday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.  <<== Skip day occurred November 22nd, 2020 on Earth

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in December on Earth.
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.

Sol 606 is Saturday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.  <<== Skip day occurred November 22nd, 2020 on Earth

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in December on Earth.
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.
