Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars:  <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth due to the longer Martian Day. December 2020 next alignment estimate.

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35  Martian Month in 12 month format: 10 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 300 degrees

Solar Longitude: 299.3   Sol Number: 561  Change is +.6 degrees << The next Mars Skip day will occur (about) November 21st on Earth
Previous SL:      298.7  Previous Sol: 560  <<== Astronomical month 10 is drawing to a close. One more Sol should do it.

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   212,814,771 km Difference is +149067 <= 6084 km/hour at 9.5 on 10/20
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   212,665,704 km Difference is +140674 <= 6037 km/hour at 9.0 on 10/19
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   212,525,030 km Difference is +149436 <= 5954 km/hour at 9.7 on 10/18

Mars is past it's closest distance to Earth ... Light travel time is (<4 minutes) Communications delay would be about 8 minutes round trip.

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.

Next up: TYC 23-1146-1 Magnitude 8.86 Below path Day 0 24+ hours ahead
HIP 5752 above and 12+ hours behind on Day 1 ... should be good for another day
Galaxy PGC 4495 Magnitude 15.70 below path 24+ hours behind on Day 2 Last day for PGC 4495

The apparent position of Mars is moving West away from the reference star, albeit slowly, as Earth slides "under" Mars
Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 561 is in Month 21 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 21 extends from Sol 558 through 585. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 21

Sol 561 is Wednesday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in November on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter

Peeking in or topic and noticed that last week we had a day time high temperature for the Insight location of 20'F... Almost warm enough for living there in the day but nights are still brutal with -140'F

Sol 568 is Wednesday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #813

We had ice on the bird bath for the first time this year.  Time to do the semi-annual bird bath heater swap.

Thanks for all three of those impressive links.  The first (astronoo) shows clearly the Hohmann transfer opportunities to Mars.

The third is designed to provide an enterprising student with everything needed to run (and hopefully understand) an Earth/Sun simulation.

Sol 574 is Tuesday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   215,819,358 km Difference is +152692 <= 7036 km/hour at 7.8 on 11/08
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   215,666,666 km Difference is +187342 <= 6990 km/hour at 10.1 on 11/07
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   215,479,324 km Difference is +157175 <= 6924 km/hour at 7.3 on   11/06

Galaxy PGC 1273509 0 hours 58 minutes 1.2 seconds Day 5 Just past Mars (Retrograde movement may be slowing)

Light travel time is between 4 and 5 minutes. Communications delay would be 8+ minutes round trip. [4:72,000,000] [5:90,000,000]

Sol 580 is in Month 21 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 21 extends from Sol 558 through 585. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 21

Sol 580 is Monday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.
