Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Winnipeg current restrictions
People don't like it. People are rebelling against the masks. But...
new cases today (city of Winnipeg only): 114
currently in hospital: 17
of which, in intensive care: 1
currently active cases: 1,163
deaths (still Winnipeg only): 20

I'm pissed off! In July we had 1 active case total for the entire province, no one in hospital, and total number of deaths 2. That lasted a couple weeks. Then the Premier decided to "re-open the economy". Lifting restrictions within the province was a good thing, but he allowed people to enter our province from anywhere in Western Canada without self-isolating. Including the provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, and a portion of western Ontario closest to our province. But we already had a problem of Americans entering BC and Alberta. The US insisted that anyone promising to drive through from the lower 48 states of the US into Alaska must be allowed to drive through Canada. So Americans told border security there were driving through, then headed straight for Banff, or Jasper, or Lake Louise. BC found Americans doing that too. BC started issuing fines, one American is facing a fine of $750,000! But too little too late. So the Premier of our province allowed people from BC and Alberta to enter our province without self-isolating?!? It didn't have to be Americans directly; Americans would spread disease to Canadians in those two provinces, then they would bring the disease to our province.

To make matters worse, the Premier said any American film crew could enter Manitoba as long as they "promise" they had self-isolated for 14 days where they came from before entering our province. Uh huh! A producer of a multi-million dollar project is going to waste 2 weeks doing that? Where time is money? Forcing A-list actors, big name director, and production crew to waste their time? Do you really think they would do that? The producer will sign a paper making the promise, and no one will have self-isolated at all. Do you know what disease statistics are like in California? So those people are allowed to enter our province?

Now look at today's statistics!

This is a population density, connective road quality, and economics of the people as to how much they will move about. Not to mention age and health conditions of those in the affected area.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

For weekly cases in the UK, see this interactive map

A very large fraction of the cases are contained on university campuses, yet the government is locking down towns and cities instead of acknowledging that.

Also, there's a letter in the Lancet from a bunch of "actual experts" opposing the Great Barrington Declaration, because apparently disagreeing with the lockdown proponents means epidemiologists lose their status as experts. But the proponents still haven't provided any cost-benefit analysis to justify lockdowns, they're just going ahead with them and we're paying the price.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

For SpaceNut re #632 ...

Thanks for showing this report!

Anika Chebrolu, 14, won the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
Anika's winning invention uses in-silico methodology to discover a lead molecule that can selectively bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

I am reminded of use of poisonous substances (in precisely measured amounts) to assist with other medical treatments.

Why Is Lead Harmful? Lead can harm production of blood cells and the absorption of calcium needed for strong bones and teeth, muscle movements, and the work of nerves and blood vessels. High lead levels can cause brain and kidney damage.

Lead Poisoning (for Parents) - Nemours KidsHealth

If someone runs across an article about the details of how the lead molecule interacts (positively or negatively) with human physiology, I'd be interested to see it.

My impression, from the little hints from the article SpaceNut showed, is that while a lead molecule can be harmful to humans, if it is harnessed to perform a targeted operation on a specific part of the virus, then it will disable the virus and NOT harm human cells.

A scientist (14 or older) would (presumably) be well aware of the risks when introducing lead into the human body.

Edit#1: I was not familiar with the term "in-silico" ... apparently it means "computer simulation"

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Lead is blamed for many a problem with children that are not as normal as parents had expected but thats not the case with the small low levels that can be found even in copper pipe lead soldered joints. So there may be a question for those that did get it and whether they have copper lead soldered pipes or plastic pvc….

For those that still do not want to wear masks when we know it will reduce the chances of getting the virus the airlines have known that they were the spreaders of the virus be for the slow down in the industry so it comes with little surprise that  Delta has added 460 people to its no-fly list since April for refusing wear masks

All the while the US sets new record with more than 77K COVID-19 cases in a day

As the graph shows we are back to July numbers when the virus required setting up field hospitals to handle the hospital overflow....
Some states are seeing this scenario play over again....

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

I expect the use of lead would NOT be for treatment, but rapid and cheap testing. If we had quick, one dollar testing kits, we could test everyone in the country every couple of days and isolate anyone with the disease. It would be over in a few weeks, without needing to lock anyone down.

The current rapid tests have to high rate of a false negative and positive and are exposure to test time sensitive requiring repeat testing.
On the whole the idea of isolation after testing is a start which has not happened.

Why False Positives Matter, Too But false negatives are not the only errors bedeviling coronavirus diagnostics.

Some rapid tests, which forgo sophisticated laboratory equipment and can deliver results in under an hour, have been criticized for returning high numbers of false positives, especially when used to screen people without symptoms. Even laboratory tests that rely on a very reliable technique called polymerase chain reaction, or P.C.R., have been known to return the occasional false positive.

Oh, I forgot to post some very interesting links, didn't I.

Age-specific infection fatality rate estimates for swine flu and covid (CDC and meta study preprint

As it turns out, if you're under 50, swine flu was significantly more dangerous than covid is. If you're 50-60, covid is 3-4x as dangerous.

Yet, there was no lockdown in 2009. But in 2020, *everyone* is getting locked down, not just the people who are actually at risk from it. Because BoJo is an idiot.

When the Coronavirus crisis first reared its ugly head early this year and Imperial college produced their ludicrously pessimistic predictions of mortality for the UK and other countries, BoJo proposed that we carry on as normal and allow herd immunity to establish itself.  As it turns out, that was the right call.  Unfortunately, BoJo didn't stick to his guns.  There were simply too many people (mostly on the left) pushing for authoritarian social controls.  I am no fan of BoJo, for reasons that I won't go into here.  But initially, he did make the right call and the UK would have followed the Swedish model if he had had his way.

The main motivation behind lockdowns, mask policy and other authoritarian controls, is to prevent hospitals from filling up with corona virus cases.  Were hospitals to be overwhelmed, people could end up dying from routine complications like appendicitis.  This does make some sense to me.  If corona virus had arrived in the 1980s, it would probably have been recorded as a flu spike and it probably would not have made the headlines, far less motivated lockdowns and other authoritarian controls.  But Britain and other developed countries are now so full of old people, fat people and non-whites, that this illness risks overwhelming the health service.  We are now vulnerable to disease in ways that we were not just 30 years ago.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Well, Sweden didn't adopt a do-nothing strategy. Until recently, they encouraged over-70s to isolate, restricted event sizes, and had remote learning for universities.

If we locked down people over 60, then the hospitals probably wouldn't be overwhelmed, according to the graphics that the *government themselves* showed at their press conference. They're far less likely to be infected at the moment than the average, and yet still make up ~90% of hospital cases.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

When totally isolating the nursing homes would help its the staff that does not remain isolated for the long term which is required to protect them from getting it.

Of course the same would be true for the existing conditions that many have in there own respective families as the healthy members would also need to be isolated so as to not bring it home to those at risk as well.

Of course the issues for both is no ability for the long term needs of consumables to which we all need to survive. maybe drop locations that can clean surfaces and disinfect any item is a start to solving that supply train but is that enough for those that must stay isolated?

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

We knew that this disease was not normal with regards to immunity, multiple infections and now we know that it can linger on for a long time as well showing no signs that you have it.

A woman shed infectious coronavirus particles for at least 70 days without showing symptoms, a study found

We sort of knew that it shed for a much longer period from all of the infected from cruise ships that had been isolated for way more than 2 weeks and yet even in isolation for another 2 -4 weeks many more came down it the Covid-19 disease.

On March 2, a 71-year-old hospital patient with leukemia tested positive for the coronavirus.

On average, COVID-19 patients shed infectious virus particles for about eight days. But 70 days after her diagnosis, the elderly patient was still shedding infectious particles. By mid-June, more than 100 days later, the woman was still testing positive — meaning her body still contained traces of the virus' genetic material.

Thats not good....

Here in Manitoba we're in a second lockdown. The last 2 weeks of June and first 2 weeks of July we had zero cases, other than truck drivers that entered our province, and those who lived in the house with those truck drivers. So the province re-opened the economy. That included allow people to travel to western provinces without self-isolating, despite the fact Alberta and BC had over 300 active cases each. And allowed film crews in if they sign a document stating they "promise" to self-isolate where they came from. Yea, right! As if a film crew is going to pay for actors, directors, and crew to sit around doing nothing for 2 weeks. They'll sign what they have to in order to get in, and not do what the document says. Now we have the highest per-capita infection rate in Canada.

Latest news: the province won't allow a drive-through Christmas display. Drive-through. They refused to explain why.
