Re: Politics

SpaceNut,

So, now if you resist arrest for an outstanding warrant and get shot by the Police for doing so, no crime was committed?

By that kind of logic, a neo nazi who commits a violent felony can go free if he gets shot by the Police for resisting arrest.  That sounds exactly like Democrat logic to me.  The entire concept behind equality before the law is now blatantly political in nature and has nothing to do with suspicion of criminal activity.  I guess this shouldn't surprise anyone when Democrats are talking about defunding the Police.  Everyone should brace for "street justice" now that we're no longer permitting the Police to arrest people for committing felonies.

Re: Politics

Hence the chance is coming to take that stand and do the right thing...

Following up on the violent / rioter protests is hopefully a correction to those committing a crime and not those voicing there freedom of speech.

U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr reportedly wants to charge racial justice protesters with sedition, a harsh move that would dramatically raise the stakes in the Trump administration’s crackdown and asked prosecutors to explore whether to bring charges against the mayor of Seattle for allowing a police-free protest zone.

A package addressed to Trump containing the deadly poison ricin was intercepted

The letter tested positive in both a field test and a laboratory test, one official said, according to NBC News. It's unclear when the letter was intercepted.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that the Secret Service, and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating the origins of the letter.
The letter was intercepted at the screening facility and was not sent to the White House.
A person suspected of sending the ricin letter has been detained trying to enter the U.S. from Canada, a federal law enforcement official told NBC News.

Re: Politics

Watching the "Speech From The Throne" in Canada. Our Prime Minister didn't like questions about ethics last month, so asked the Governor General to prorogue Parliament. Before coming back into session, a Speech From The Throne is required. Realize what this means. How would you like it if your President had authority to close Congress for a month or 4 months. And I mean both the House of Representatives and Senate. Completely closed, cannot sit at all. All committees are also closed. All bills in process are erased; if anyone really wants that bill, it would have to be re-introduced and the process started from the beginning. Before Congress could resume, your President gives a "State of the Union Address". That's what this means. New covered the Speech From The Throne continuously, no break. It was half an hour of pagentry, then an hour long Speech. The Governor General gives a brief, non-partisan speech first, then the GG reads the speech written by the Prime Minister. The PM cannot sit on the throne himself; he just sits in a little chair to one side of the throne, but the GG reads word-for-word the document the PM (and his staff) wrote. Today's speech is long-winded, but doesn't say anything new. Everything is the same as we've heard since the last federal election.

Next, the Prime Minister will address the nation. This doesn't happen often in our country. It's only happened a couple times since World War 2. Last time was when the previous Prime Minister screw up, almost got removed by a non-confidence vote. The closest equivalent in the US would be impeachment. So the previous Prime Minister spoke to the nation explaining why he shouldn't be impeached. Now our current Prime Minister will address the nation. Most people expect he'll reiterate the same things from the Speech From The Throne. But again that didn't contain anything new. He's the leader of the party I joined, but I joined several leaders ago. frustrating mad

Re: Politics

Robert,

It sounds like you don't approve of the job performance of the people you voted for.  Maybe put more thought into who you vote into power next time?  Anyway, just a thought.

Here in America, the country is often better off when the politicians decide to do very little.  And yes, it's very frustrating at times.

Re: Politics

Went over the recording in more detail. He did say some new things.

I approved of Finance Minister Paul Martin in the 1990s. I said if he ever became party leader, I would join. He did in 2004, so I did. Unfortunately he lost the election of 2006. Conservatives have become infested with "social conservatives", who are extreme right-wing. The Liberal party under Justin Trudeau is pandering to left-wing extremists in our party. He appears to be competing with the NDP party over who can be more socialist. The vast majority of Canadians are in the centre, but all parties have abandoned the centre. You ask me to put more thought into who I vote for? I do that almost every day! We're screwed! Parties in the US are extremely polarized, here in Canada they seem to be following a few years behind. The vast majority of voters are abandoned as parties pander to their loud-mouth extremist factions. A couple years ago a new party was formed, but it immediately went hard right-wing, more right-wing than the Conservatives.

You don't realize how much the current Canadian government is teetering on the brink. If parliament votes non-confidence in the current government "soon after an election" then the Governor General will ask the leader of the official opposition if he/she can form a coalition that will hold the confidence of the majority of Parliament. But if a non-confidence vote is held this long after an election, it just triggers a new election. Voters don't want an election, but party leaders are playing a game of chicken.

Well, I sent an email to the new Finance Minister. The last one said bluntly no. If they do as I ask this time, I'll support them. If they don't, I don't know what I'll do. When I didn't win the nomination for my federal electoral district (as they call it now), I got a job as an election official. That earned me some money, but it meant I had to be non-partisan. No sign on my front lawn, and definitely didn't help anyone. Might do that again.

Well, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned people to be vigilant against COVID-19. Nothing radical. The Conservative party is the official opposition, they complain loudly.

Re: Politics

News about protests in Louisville is on Canadian news this morning. It's shocking! No charges against police who killed Breonna Taylor. Thousands of protesters in streets. Police taking guns to protesters. Two police shot. This looks like armed revolution. You realize it's only a matter of time before citizens get organized enough for a revolution. Do I need to remind my American neighbours of 1776?

Meanwhile, Trump announced he will not leave peacefully if he loses this election.
CNN: Trump's comments send a signal to his supporters about how to react if Biden prevails

I have customers and coworkers who are Trump fans up here in Canada. I have tried to point out many of Trump's promises and issues are very valid. I haven't posted often about American politics in recent years, but this is bad. I'm not blaming just one side; Democrats don't seem to understand the issues that got Trump elected. But seriously, this looks like armed revolution!

Re: Politics

For RobertDyck ... I don't think the reaction in Louisville is as bad as it might have looked ...

The City imposed a curfew with a (pretty significant) show of force and the few protesters who had lit a few fires faded away.

My assumption is that this is just more of the Same-Old-Same-Old, but ** this ** time, the Adjutant General is a black.  That ** may ** have defused the tensions a bit.  The law that allowed this behavior by the police is worth examining.  A group of legislators voted to approve a plan to break down a private citizen's door in the middle of the night.  That sounds like something in Putin's Russia.

Hopefully there'll be more reporting about how that law came into being, and what (if anything) can be done about it.

Re: Politics

I managed about 10 minutes of the presidential candidate debate last night, before turning it off in disgust.  Somehow, both candidates managed to lose.  I find it incredible, that in a country with a population of over 300 million, which is suppedosedly the nucleus of Western civilization, these two poorly educated and senile old men are the candidates for leader.  It appears to be a pattern repeated across the western world, with joke leaders like Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau and Emanuel Macron.  What the hell has gone wrong with the western world?

Re: Politics

Calliban,

We've run out of people with new ideas.  Half of the candidates think they can solve all societal problems with some form of socialism or communism and the other half think they can solve our problems with imperialism.  In any event, you don't have to watch our political process if it upsets you and it's probably better for your mental health if you don't.  It's "Bigly Biggism" vs "I'm Joe and I forgot this message".  If Joe had a personality at all, there's no question that he'd win, but he doesn't and that's that.  One side is bailing out criminals so they can commit more crimes, so I'm going with the side that doesn't incentivize petty criminality to further their agenda.  The Democrats couldn't win on their own merits because they haven't demonstrated that they have any, so they decided to try to lie / cheat / steal their way to victory and that failed spectacularly.  That didn't work out for them last time and with any luck and it won't work this time, either, but they're going to double down on stupid because their politicians are stupid- somehow dumber than President Trump.  Hopefully they'll finally learn something about socially acceptable behavior, but I'm not holding my breath.  The Democrat Party is the party of over-the-top theatrics can always go back to the drawing board and reinvent itself again, whereas the Republican Party never has.

Re: Politics

There is something admirable about Trump's brazeness.  Having just recovered from Coronavirus, he storms into the press area, tares off his mask and shouts 'Don't be afraid of the Coronavirus!'  Nothing can keep the man down.  He's like a force of nature.  He is not a politician; he says exactly what he thinks, often it is half baked and unwise.  But there is no deception or hidden agenda with Trump.  And that is precisely what millions of people love about him.  People don't like politicians.  And people appreciate straight talk, even if it isn't articulate.  I suspect that it is precisely these qualities that will win Trump the next election.

I am inclined to think that the furore and political reaction to the Coronavirus is hugely over the top.  My wife and I had it earlier this year.  It made us both ill for a couple of weeks.  But I have been more ill from flu in the past.  I do not doubt that there are real dangers from this virus and that over a million have died globally.  But the flu kills as many people every year.

Do the dangers posed by Coronavirus justify the economic damage and loss of freedom that have been incurred in a vain attempt to mitigate it?  Definitely not.  I strongly suspect that lockdowns and other authoritarian controls are being done for other reasons.  Never let a good crisis go to waste.  Confiscating freedom for the promise of security is the classic ploy of the oppressor.  It has happened so many times over the past century that it beggars belief that people still fall for it.  Then again the media have whipped up so much hysteria over this crisis, that one could be forgiven for thinking that civilisation itself was under threat from this virus.

A good film.  It captures one pertinent reality of interstellar travel.  Journey times inevitably exceed the natural human lifespan.  There are no shortcuts or new drive technologies that will ever change that.  Exotic physics that allow effective velocity greater than light, are very unlikely and are looking less and less possible as time goes on.  The Large Hadron Collider has so far proven the Standard Model and there are no hints at all of any deeper physics.  Even if it ultimately proves possible to bend space in a way that speeds up the journey, the energy cost is going to be huge.

I would imagine that the doctors treating Trump were highly motivated to cure him by any means possible.  So they should be.
