Mars is approaching perihelion...

I found a citation that Mars receives (about) 40% more Solar radiation at perihelion than it does at apohelion.

That increase of energy would account for the expected increase in weather.

As Mars perihelion approaches, it occurs to me that this astronomical event is likely to have significance to future Mars residents. The planet will be as close to the Sun as it is going to get, and radiation from the Sun will be as great as it is going to get.

On Earth, the middle of Winter is celebrated. RobertDyck has commented on the traditions on Earth in other topics, including the one dedicated to Holidays.

On Mars, it seems to me that a festive mood is likely at this time of the Martian year. There are many months to come of a slog deeper and deeper into the cold, but for this period, things will be about as good as they are going to get.

Dust storms are about to start up, but NewMars contributors have already spoken to that problem. The one I like is the thin aerogel layer that would prevent winds from moving particles on the ground. Winds would still occur, if such a layer were installed, but they would not stir up the dust.

We are a few sols away from Perihelion. That is a noteworthy point in the orbit of Mars. I am looking forward to seeing the count of kilometers per hour approaching the Sun drop to zero. That event is predicted for August 3, 2020, Earth Calendar.

Sol 482 marks the launch of the third of three planned unmanned probes to Mars.

Vehicles in transit now include those from the UAE/Japan, China and the United States.

Predicted arrival time for Perseverance is February 18, Earth time.

Edit#1: The NASA probe Perseverance received a second boost by it's Centaur upper stage. That boost is reported to have been successful.

As a curious anomaly, the spacecraft shut itself down when it passed through the Earth's shadow and became cooler than the engineers had expected.

Another anomaly is that the strength of the signal from the spacecraft was too strong for the very sensitive radio equipment in the Deep Space Network. This problem will decrease as the spacecraft continues on its way. Compensating signal processing methods are being used to pull the received data out of the recordings. This has happened before, according to NASA updates about the current mission.

Perihelion is very close ... It was predicted to occur on August 3rd, Earth Calendar, and at 11 AM Eastern Standard Time, the rate of descent toward the Sun is showing as 27 kilometers per hour. Since the date of August 3rd will persist on Earth until the last time zone strikes Midnight, I think there is a very good chance the rate of progress toward the Sun will pass through zero during that interval.

I'm expecting the next status check, on the morning of August 4th, to show that Mars is once again receding from the Sun on its way to Aphelion, 334 Sols from now.

Edit#1: Brain Challenge

For this post, I wanted to be able to report the persistence of August 3rd around the world.

In starting to think about it, I set focus upon Greenwich, England, where (by convention) the marker for Universal Time is maintained.

As the Earth rotates, and as the Time Zone Marker at Greenwich passes through local midnight, the new day begins there, but the old day persists everywhere else. It crossed my mind to wonder if towns immediately to the West of Greenwich would be experiencing the previous day, and of course, they would, if they were going by astronomical time. However, (again by convention) humans have established time zones, so all towns within whatever time zone Greenwich occupies would be counted as having passed into the new day at the same time as Greenwich.

So, I conclude that (by convention) the persistence of the old day will be less than twentyfour hours, depending upon the location of the border of the time zone in which Greenwich resides.

Accordingly, I would guess (wildly) that the interval within which Mars could pass through zero kilometers per hour in its descent toward the Sun would be on the order of 23 hours from midnight at Greenwich. According to www.worldtimeserver.com, UTC is 15:17 (as this text is entered).

I am guessing that August 3rd will persist for (on the order of) 8 more hours at Greenwich, but I would expect it to persist for 16 more hours East of Greenwich.

All that said, (and upon reflection), for the purpose of this post, I think it is reasonable to take Greenwich time as the marker, and in that case, Mars has only 8 hours to pass through zero kilometers per hour for the prediction to turn out to be correct.

Thus, it should be possible to access theSkyLive web site 8 hours from now (as Greenwich passes through midnight) and check to see if the transition has occurred. I've made a note to check the status of Mars at 19:00 local time.

Edit#1: at 19.7 local time, 206,651,787 km was the distance to the Sun reported by TheSkyLive.com.

The distance reported this morning was 206,6451,452 ... The zero point is passed ... The long climb to Aphelion is under way.

The next Skip Day will occur in September on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol reaches 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
