On this day On This Day in Space! May 24, 1962: Scott Carpenter becomes 2nd American in orbit for 3 passes in just under 5 hours.
Carpenter was one of NASA’s first group of astronauts known as the "Mercury Seven." He was the backup pilot for John Glenn, who first orbited Earth three months earlier.

For SpaceNut re #630
Thanks for adding this interesting reminder of Scott Carpenter's flight!
Your post is a reminder for us all that there are already a number of "annual" (Mars style) anniversary opportunities. The landers that have survived for impressive periods are candidates, but even those whose remains are scattered on the terrain are worth remembering occasionally.
It will take arrival of a new member in this forum, for us to see postings along these lines.
This is an invitation for any forum reader who is not yet a member, but would like to focus upon noting the special days that are slowly accumulating in the 35 Mars Years of serious human physical interaction with the planet. I am not unmindful of astronomical investigations of Mars, but they are (most likely) forever a part of Earth history.
Registration in this forum is not difficult. However, due to the high volume of spam traffic, please post your first message with text that is meaningful in the topic you have chosen.

SpaceNut ... this may be a good time to remind you of the fund raising opportunity our work here may provide for the Mars Society.
It is becoming increasingly clear (to me at least) that the calendar plan for a business calendar for Mars is practical. The most propitious time for launch of a new combined Earth/Mars calendar is the well established Earth based calendar market. Every year as we approach the new year, millions of individuals and businesses place orders for new Terrestrial calendars, so they can have them on the wall on January 1st.
While the Mars New Year will be occurring on February 7, 2021 (according to marsnewyear.com) it will be close enough so that it might provide a bit of extra interest for a Combined Earth/Mars calendar.
What I have in mind is a Mars Calendar with an Earth overlay. It would be exactly what a Mars business person would want and need for onsite operations which must be coordinated with Earth suppliers and shipment opportunities.
I decided to send a contact form invitation to the folks who sponsor the marsnewyear.com web site, to see if they might be interested in a joint project.
Proceeds would then be shared between the Mars Society and the educational activities of the marsnewyear.com organization.

Just FYI ... I'm looking for a publisher who might be interested in a cooperative partnership with the Mars Society to produce a combined Mars/Earth calendar.

I'm working on a business calendar for Mars. There may be an audience for a calendar that combines the Earth traditional calendar with the 24 month designed calendar for Mars. You can evaluate the idea by visiting NewMars forums daily calendar

Mars is almost 60% complete along or away around its path. We are heading towards a mars winter of which the Insight page indicates we are warming not cooling for the day time temperatures which makes the page before post #554 of location incorrect. Something else that is on the page is that the air pressure drops with the rising temperature with the wind air speed rising during the mars day.

For SpaceNut re #554
Here is some more from the link I did in the above post edit.
Mars year
Spring equinox (Ls = 0°) Mar 23 2019
Summer solstice (Ls = 90°) Oct 08 2019
Autumnal equinox (Ls = 180°) Apr 08 2020
Winter solstice (Ls = 270°) Sep 02 2020
Spring equinox (Ls = 0°) Feb 07 2021
According to the French web site this topic is following, today's sol is 430.
Solar Longitude: 214.9 is the value computed for location.
Without doing anything more than just looking at the previous post with respect to the French web site, it looks to me as though reaching 270 degrees on September 2nd of this year (on Earth) is a reasonable prediction.
Thanks for keeping an eye on this topic!
As a reminder, I am hoping to find a publisher who might be interested in working on a Mars/Earth calendar.
So far I have written to only one publisher, but I have a set of six more I hope to get around to writing "soon".
