Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Mars does not orbit the sun at a constant speed along its path and at aphelion its at its slowest and as it swings back around its starting to move faster as it approaches the sun. The second image in post 543 has the ls marked on it.

edit:
Mars Calendar

Mars' elliptical orbit makes its distance from the Sun change with time, and also makes it speed up and slow down in its orbit. Mars is at aphelion (its greatest distance from the Sun, 249 million kilometers, where it moves most slowly) at Ls = 70°, near the northern summer solstice, and at perihelion (least distance from the Sun, 207 million kilometers, where it moves fastest) at Ls = 250°, near the southern summer solstice. The Mars dust storm season begins just after perihelion at around Ls = 260°.

Page contains table for mars seasons and dates to be able to calculate its position as I did before with the julian number count.

The mars day has to do with its rotation and not its movement around the sun of which if the days length of time was changing at the same rate then I would see that we are off but thats not the case. The only means to tell if day to orbit are different is to look at it with a telescope to view an identifiable mark on mars to view the time of rotation and movement amount around the sun.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #543

Thanks for including the diagrams.  For some reason, only the first one showed up when I first looked at #543.

it's possible you were still working on the post when I looked at it.

Your encouragement to look again revealed the diagram showing the eccentricity of the orbit, and most helpfully, relative durations of the segments.

Here's a question for you ... where do you think the planet is on the diagram showing eccentricity?

To help me with your answer, consider the diagram as a clock, and give the location (if you can) using time designation.

Thanks!

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #543 Diagram #3 mars-seasons

This diagram appears to show that the period of the orbit covered in the past terrestrial year was spent in the apogee portion of the orbit.

The clue that I am noticing is the label of Month 6 (according to the astronomical 12 month calendar).

Month 6 on the diagram may correspond to the Month 6 given in the French web site.

If the situation in reality is as shown by the diagram, the speed of the planet should dramatically increase as it enters the perigee portion of the orbit.

What is impossible for (me at least) to know is what the software on the French site is going to do with longitude as the computations enter the coming period.

In the absence of contact from the French site, the only thing to do is to continue tracking the web site to see what happens.

I added the URL for the astronomical position of Mars to the daily post: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #554

Thank you for pulling those dates out of the references!

April 8th (on earth) looks about right for a match with the French web site.   They are showing Longitude 172.3 on Sol 359 today.

180 minus 172.3 is 7.7 degrees to cover.  At a daily rate of .525 degrees per day (if orbit were circular) it would take 14?15 days.

April 8th is 13 days from now, so we are in the ballpark.

I've decided to add the computed distance of Mars to the Sun to the daily report.  This will show if we are indeed moving into the perigee of the orbit.

This entire exercise is based upon arbitrary decisions made by a small number of astronomers, and then accepted (as nearly as I can tell) by the community.

Adding the new (computed) distance data from the new source will serve as a needed check on the performance of the software on the French web site.

The purpose of this exercise over the past Earth year has been to confirm that the proposed business calendar for Mars is suitable, and I am increasingly persuaded that the design is on the right track.  The calendar is simple, easy to understand, easy to use and (most of all) easy to keep aligned with the astronomical calendar at year end, when whatever difference exists is simply absorbed into a longer New Year's Day.

Thanks again for your support of this undertaking!

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

The issues of pin pointing any object relative to the central point is the sun is the fact to which part of any viewing point will be obscured by it as it swings around it. We also do not have any stationary location outward to observe the planets path either. To do the best observation of these types of motion would require 3 synchronous points that could hold there observing point without change. Any object will in time be pulled towards the suns magnetic field from a stationary location even at father distances beyond pluto.
We have used the 3 satelites linked by laser to detect gravity waves so we know how to do this.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

I am happy to be able to post this courteous reply from an administrator of the French web site used for the daily Martian Calendar report:

From: Francois Forget <francois.forget@lmd.jussieu.fr>

Sorry I could not test the newmars.com site and calendar. What I can tell you is that our calculator has been heavily tested and is accurate with regard to the calculation of Solar Longitude Ls (the angle on the orbit starting at Ls=0° after spring equinox). It is not complex, but note that there is no analytical formula to accurately compute Ls from time (sol). One must resolve an implicit function, but Newton already designed a method in the 18th century...

Also in the Mars science/space mission community we are now all using the calendar that you can see on our web page, counting Mars years after april 11 1955 starting at Ls=0°. Today is Martian year 35, Ls=172.3° (sol 359).

On a given days we devide the martian day (sols) in 24 to use Martian hours. Then on Mars it is important to distinguish True Solar Local Time and Mean Solar Local Time...

With best regards,

Francois

We will see soon enough if Monsieur Forget's confidence in his web site is justified.  The planet will need to complete more than 180 degrees of longitude in the next 668-359 (ie, 309) Sols.

Edit#1: The rate of longitudinal progression will need to average .56 (and change) for the year to complete on time.  That means the rounding of the presentation on the French web site should show .6 every other Earth day.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

In about 6 days Mars will be half way around along Mars yearly path around the sun on a voyage that man would like to be a part of someday in the future to live, see and feel the seasons of that new lifes experiences while on a journey for man's birth to the solar system.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Tomorrow will mark the half way trip around the sun for Mars. Last image in post 543 shows that mars is lagging where earth is positioned and much like earth is entering spring, so is mars.

Mars 2020 rover, which would notionally lift off in July or August of 2021 and arrive at Mars in February 2021.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Only the upper parts of the Northern hemisphere on Earth are entering spring, Spacenut. That's your part and mine. The poleward parts of the Southern hemisphere are experiencing the arrival of Autumn and the Equatorial parts don't get either spring or autumn.
Same goes for Mars.
