Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Mostly due to not cleaning any surfaces that are contaminated with the virus is why is coming back as it can stay viable for others to catch even 3 weeks later from the surfaces of most materials.
The NH govemor has announced a stay at home plan to curb the virus, with only essentail business to remain open. The list willl be out in the next few days as to what that means. That duration will last through to may 7th or so.

Here is an update on genetic tracing of the virus epidemic....

The key takeaway from the article is the observation (verified by genetic analysis) that stay-at-home policies are working, where they are in strong effect.

Another takeaway is the concept of successfully stamping out embers from a fire started by a single infected individual.

For SpaceNut re #203

Thanks for the (to me crucially important) link about laundry!

The Yahoo news feed this evening included an article about the US Postal service.  Apparently it was in serious trouble before the virus.

The US Postal Service is in crisis, with lawmakers warning that plunging mail volumes could shut it down by June without "urgent" financial help — threatening everything from critical medicine deliveries and vote by mail to a third of Amazon orders.

But the crisis is far more than financial. The National Association of Letter Carriers, the union representing USPS city carriers, said 51 USPS employees had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday. On top of that, nearly 2,000 were in quarantine.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

The large cities of the US are now in the growing echos of virus spread... today is the 10th stay home, risking only minimal exposure to family by going out only for the neccessities of the days consumables. It was also the last saturday of the month and the church food pantry was in full swing to still give aid to the community poor in need of foods to help them make it through to the end of the month. The site was somewhat changed from a small room to a much larger open room with all tables and people made to maintain the 6 foot distance from the workers which aid in passing out the foods and those that would aid in helping to carry it out to your vehicle. The gradual appearance of face masks, gloves are now more common to see when out for the protection of the worker and for the person coming for aid.
Convience stores are now putting up splatter sneeze shield of plexiglass at the counters for the cashiers while others still at just using distance.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Today I watched how thinking out of the box for PPE occurred in Spain, when a few of a hospital staff got an idea to turn a scuba mask for snokeling into a better than use once mask with the help of 3D printing of a key part to adapt the outlet to a canister section that normaly is used with a ventilator. This allows the user to seal the face from contamination and can be cleaned. Once the cartridges meet the expiration of use 5 days the cartridges are simply replaced and its ready for use once more after cleaning.
They are also looking at the c-pap machines mask for other uses as well.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Ignorance. Why would tourists from Beijing and Shanghai be the source of the violent spread in Northern Italy? Don't Chinese tourists go to Athens or London? Or Rome for that matter? Why haven't we seen a similar huge breakout in those locations?  Why is Spain suffering so badly - is Madrid a big draw for Chinese tourists - I doubt it. But Spain does have lots of illegal Chinese work gangs.

In Northern Italy it was the illegal Chinese work gangs, many of them drawing poor people from the Wuhan region who were the accelerant for the spread. No one has any idea who they are, where they are working. They travel on false documents. There has been concern in the past that deaths are not registered - because the people are on false passports and that will be discovered if the death certification process goes forward - bodies are disposed of, apparently, by the gangs. Add the other factors - bad air pollution in Northern Italy, and elderly population and a cultural tendency for young and old to mix closely, often under the same roof - and you probably have a full explanation for the distaster in that region.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Air pollution is certainly a factor I think. It's certainly a good working assumption because we know that both North Italy and Wuhan suffer high levels of air pollution, so it could be a critical factor. Air pollution was high in Madrid as well, so that could also be an  aggravating factor in Spain.

Every country is going to be slightly different.  The USA has a lot of homelessness, people on the streets and opioid addiction. That could be a big factor. Anyone leading stressful lives with weakened immune systems could be vulnerable.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

While we still see people not cleaning our hands and surfaces or keeping the distances from one another are other diseases that we pass to one another. 14 Diseases You Can Prevent Just by Washing Your Hands

Norovirus

It takes only one norovirus particle to get you sick, as opposed to between 50 and 100 particles of the flu virus. But good, old-fashioned handwashing can help to prevent the assorted gastrointestinal misery that results from a stomach bug. In fact, it trumps both the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers (which the CDC cautions aren't as effective against norovirus) and vigorously disinfecting surfaces. According to a study published in Royal Society Open Science, scouring surfaces only reduces transmission by a maximum of 60 percent, while handwashing—if done by a majority of people on, say, a cruise ship—could completely stop an outbreak. Don't miss these 8 other crucial tips for avoiding the dreaded stomach bug.

The flu

The flu can be deadly—and not just to those who are very young, very old, or immunocompromised. The 2017–2018 flu season was particularly dangerous, with the CDC reporting 80,000 related deaths (including 180 children). Aside from getting the flu shot, handwashing is a key preventive measure, especially when you're exposed to flu germs without knowing it. "Every infectious disease has what's called an incubation period—the time between when you are exposed and when you get sick—and some have a prodrome when you start to feel sick but don't have signs and symptoms specific to a particular disease," says Haas. "In many cases, infectious diseases, such as influenza, can be transmitted before a person has signs and symptoms of the disease." Handwashing can make sure you're not unwittingly infecting yourself.

Pink eye

When your eyes get ooey, gooey, and super itchy—and have a crusty coating on them in the morning—you probably have conjunctivitis, aka pink eye. Since people rub their eyes to alleviate the discomfort and then touch their surroundings, the virus or bacteria that cause pink eye ends up on all sorts of surfaces, where it can live for hours or even days, according to the National Institutes of Health. Children are at particular risk for infection and transmission. "Kids explore the world around them in a tactile manner, [so] they are exposed to more potentially contaminated material than adults," explains Neha Vyas, MD, a family medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic. "Any viral or bacterial infection can occur in children as a result of this. They are most at risk for eye infections, sore throats, skin infections, lung infections, and genitourinary and gastrointestinal infections." Teaching proper handwashing techniques early will help them—and everyone around them—to stay healthy now and in the future. One good way to make sure they're washing their hands enough: Tell them to sing "Happy Birthday" twice as they're sudsing up.

Salmonellosis

A big reason to wash your hands more often is that you're touching poop particles way more than you realize. That's exactly how salmonella gets passed around. The bacteria lives in the intestines of animals and people, and it's often transmitted through infected food that hasn't been fully cooked (meat and eggs) or washed thoroughly (fruits and vegetables); when you don't wash your hands or equipment after preparing raw meat, poultry and fish; and when you don't properly wash your hands after using the bathroom or changing a baby's diapers. It can also be transmitted by touching an infected reptile, amphibian or farm animal, whose droppings can subsequently infect anything they touch. If you're not diligent about hand hygiene, that could be you. You should also beware of these 10 summer foods most likely to make you sick.

Mononucleosis

You probably know it as "the kissing disease," but mono—and the Epstein-Barr virus that causes it—is not only transmitted through kissing. Saliva is the main culprit, so objects that an infected person has sneezed on, coughed on, or touched could subsequently infect you should. Sharing drinks or utensils is also a common way to spread this. If you do come down with mono, you'll experience extreme fatigue, high fever, body aches, a very sore throat, and an enlarged spleen; symptoms usually last between two and four weeks but sometimes longer.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease

If you have kids or work around them, handwashing can help prevent this uncomfortable infection caused by the coxsackievirus. Common in daycares and preschools, hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) causes sores on the mouth and throat, a rash on the hands and feet, a fever and loss of appetite, reports the Mayo Clinic. What gets you sick, exactly? Contagion particles from an infected person's nose, mouth, blisters, and feces that get on your hands and then into your mouth. Disgusting, we know, which is exactly why you should be washing your hands regularly and teaching your kids to do the same. (Encourage them to keep their hands out of their mouths, while you're at it.) If you're pregnant, take particular care since HFMD has been linked to a higher risk of stillbirth near the end of a pregnancy.

Cytomegalovirus

Here's another reason to be vigilant about handwashing if you're pregnant. Good hygiene can prevent the transmission of this virus in the herpes family that can cause serious harm to your unborn child, including hearing and vision loss, intellectual disability, and even death. According to the medical journal BMC Public Health, cytomegalovirus is often passed along through the saliva or urine of young children, and the majority of CMV infections in otherwise-healthy people go undiagnosed. A little soap and water can go a long way in making sure that you and your baby-to-be are okay.

Staph

Caused by a bacteria commonly found on the skin and in the noses of healthy people, staph can become life-threatening if the bacteria gets deep into your body and infects your blood, joints, and heart. Things can get particularly dangerous with an antibiotic-resistant strain of staph called MRSA. "A staph infection may look like a boil or blister, or even just redness on the skin," says Dr. Vyas. "The stubborn bacterium can live on inanimate objects, such as towels or gym equipment. If you wash your hands, you will lessen the risk of these bacteria being transmitted from person to person." Other preventive measures include keeping wounds covered and not sharing personal items. Don't miss these 10 nasty infections you could catch at the gym.

RSV

Here's a crazy statistic from the CDC: Almost all children will have an RSV infection by the time they turn two. The thing is, you will probably just think your child has a cold. But in some children—especially those born prematurely—and in people over 65 with weakened immune systems, this virus can cause breathing problems, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and death. In fact, it kills more than 200 children each year and 14,000 older adults. Like other respiratory illnesses, coughing and sneezing send infected droplets through the air and onto surfaces.

Hepatitis A

The good news: Hepatitis A doesn't cause chronic liver disease like its cousins B and C. The bad news: It can still make you really sick, causing gastrointestinal problems, fever, fatigue, and jaundice. In some cases, it can even cause acute liver failure and necessitate hospitalization. You'll likely hear about hepatitis A outbreaks at restaurants, since this virus is often transmitted when someone hasn't washed their hands after using the bathroom before preparing your food, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Make sure to check out these 10 ways you're washing your hands wrong.

Strep throat

While viruses often cause sore throats, if a strep test determines that yours is caused by the bacteria group A Streptococcus, you'll need antibiotics. Not only can strep throat cause discomfort and be highly contagious to others, but in some cases, it can also lead to scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, a rare kidney disease called PGSN and the pediatric autoimmune disease PANDAS. According to the CDC, coughing, and sneezing spreads small respiratory droplets containing the bacteria. You can't always stop someone from coughing or sneezing on you, but you can control your own handwashing habits.

Giardiasis

While you're worrying about horrible things that can make you sick, don't forget about parasites. Handwashing can help to prevent this particular microscopic parasite from taking up residence in your small intestine, where it will cause nausea, diarrhea, and dehydration. Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital says that to prevent transmission, handwashing is particularly important before preparing or eating food, after using the bathroom or changing a diaper, and after touching sea creatures in a "touch tank" at the aquarium. Since giardiasis can also be contracted through contaminated water or food, make sure to bring your own water on camping trips (or boil stream water for 10 minutes), and wash your fruits and veggies well before eating them. Here are 9 silent signs you could have a parasite.

E. coli

We often hear about E. coli outbreaks in terms of food consumption—red meat and romaine lettuce, for example—but it can also be passed by coming into contact with an infected person or animal, according to WebMD. Also, some surprising news: You don't need to scald your hands with hot water to kill E. coli bacteria—or any other bacteria. Time reports that a recent study published in the Journal of Food Protection found that washing hands in cold, lukewarm and hot water all worked equally well. Plus, people who used lotion regularly had fewer bacteria after washing their hands; that may be due to the lotion's ability to heal dry, cracked skin, giving germs fewer places to settle in the skin.

The common cold

While not as serious as these other diseases, a cold can still make you feel miserable and ruin your week. One study found that handwashing can lower your risk of catching a respiratory illness by a whopping 45 percent. While this study didn't explore the effects of hand sanitizers, experts say that they're great in a pinch… as long as they're used correctly. According to the CDC, that means using one that contains at least 60 percent alcohol, using the correct amount detailed on the label, and rubbing it in until it's dry. "They [also] only work well if your hands are pretty clean to begin with and don't have grease or dirt on them," says Dr. Vyas. The bottom line: Hand sanitizers have their place and they're certainly convenient, but in most situations, handwashing should generally be your first line of defense.

Five years ago, Italian state owned media Company, Rai – Radiotelevisione Italiana, exposed dark efforts by China on viruses. The video, which was broadcast in November, 2015, showed how Chinese scientists were doing biological experiments on a SARS connected virus believed to be Coronavirus, derived from bats and mice, asking whether it was worth the risk in order to be able to modify the virus for compatibility with human organisms.

Tight rope walking with nations that experiment with disease to either create antidodes or to create biological weapons are what some nations do to protect as a defense just as much as to create and offense with them. I do not think that its ever going to change. That is part of the reason for nuclear oversight as to keep a status quo on not using things on what might appear to be enimies.

The family values are on the mend as many must stay home with there children. While many are stuck at home after stocking up on groceries for an extended period of self-isolation, some families are going back to basics and experimenting with recipes in the kitchen together. For some that means learning old family recipes, and for others it might be the first time they’ve really spent time cooking!

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Lockdowns aren't working in Europe. A month later the number of cases and deaths in places like Italy and Spain are still rocketing upwards.

Meanwhile no one can be bothered to explain why deaths per million in Italy from Covid-19 are over 200 and in Greece they are 5 ie  in Italy Covid-19 is 40 times more deadly! Why?  What's going on?  Doesn't make sense - at least not in terms of how the mainstream media present things. They want us to believe every country is equally vulnerable when plainly that is not true.

For SpaceNut re topic ...

The web site at the link below was quoted by the White House earlier today, I understand.

http://covid19.healthdata.org/

The charts below show projected hospital resource use based on COVID-19 deaths.
The projections assume the continuation of strong social distancing measures and other protective measures.
To view the methods used to produce the projections click here.

It is possible this site is focusing on the US.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

83,000 deaths for the USA sounds about right - that's like a bad flu epidemic that we've experienced many times before.

I remain sceptical about the positive effects of mass lockdowns. Mass lockdowns are as likely to hasten the death of people with serious health conditions who have to self-isolate as protect people from Covid-19. Lockdowns can never be 100% - millinos of people still have to work and go back to their families, and millions have to make frequent shopping trips because their usual big supermarkets have long queues and/or empty shelves. Many sick people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable,  will  become demoralised and/or not seek appropriate medical attention (for fear of contracting the virus) - also many clinics and lots of ops are not taking place. Lockdowns essentially destroy your primary health  care system and compromise general secondary care.

The only figure that really matters (but the mainstream media ignores) is excess mortality set against a medium term average - say the last five years. In the UK, excess mortality has been going DOWN since January, not up.   I've no idea what's happening in the USA but you can be assured your useless mainstream media will not report excess mortality figures.

The stay home are not lock downs persay as you still can go out but keep distance and wash chronically as well as being respectful of each others safe area. The going out each day is where we must be ever mindful of not traveling to far or to areas that are reporting numbers of infections. For the older folks going in the very early morning when stores are the cleanest from the nightly cleansing is best for those which are compromised and over 60 as its going to reduce exposures. Remembering that everything you touch may have a sneeze or cough captured by the bags or box that us used means use the gloves to remove and still wash it and you to make it less likely to be contaminated by this or other viruses. You can not assume anything is clean.

The nursing homes are a different issue in that the care givers need constant testing or just need to isolate when out so as to not bring it back in with them when they are on shift once more.

The danger zone for all coughs and sneezes

coverup be respectful to others and turn away when possible to shield them from the spray of droplets

The greater that distance can be to others the better for if this should happen

As far as I know, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan aren't on lockdown. Yet they've got a far better handle on the situation than we have here in the west.

Maybe, just maybe, East Asians aren't a different species to Europeans that has some special immunity? Maybe the difference is because they're doing something different, something that we could copy?

Just a thought.
