Robots Explore 'Mars-Like' Lava Field in Iceland as Prep for NASA's Mars 2020 Rover

This summer, researchers tested rover and drone prototypes on lava fields in Iceland from July 8 to Aug. 5, 2019. In testing the drone, the team was able to make high-resolution maps of the surface, and using information collected by the drone, "the scientists were able to quickly make decisions about where they wanted to navigate the rover and which science target they wanted to pick. This work will inform NASA's Mars 2020 operations team.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Home_Week

This week is a close out of summer for NH in that its called old home week . A time for festival type street community get togethers. So of the communities have strawberry events while others are sort of a block parties.

Every year in August the community of Freedom, New Hampshire celebrates “Old Home Week”, a New Hampshire tradition that was officially recognized by Proclamation in the New Hampshire State Legislature in 1913.

Fireworks might end the celebration as it did in my home town last night.

This would fit in well with My Hacienda as it will celebrate when I get there....

The end of summer and beginning of fall means we are seeing carnivals and fairs for the local areas. Some are labeled things like the BIG E Fair or small like the Acton fair which is slightly less but more than a carnival.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Nasa is looking for names for the 2020 rover. Through Nov. 1, K-12 students in the U.S. are encouraged to enter an essay contest to name NASA's next Mars rover. NASA has selected two partner organizations to run a nationwide contest giving K-12 students in U.S. schools a chance to make history.

https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/particip … the-rover/

You can help name NASA's next Mars rover, even if you're not a kid.

https://www.space.com/mars-2020-rover-n … judge.html

NASA would appreciate some assistance vetting the thousands of expected submissions, so agency officials are encouraging folks to be volunteer judges. If you're a U.S. resident willing to spare about 5 hours of your time to make or break the dreams of children, you can apply here.

The six-wheeled robot, whose body is based on that of NASA's Curiosity Mars rover, will land in February 2021 inside the 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero Crater. Jezero was selected as the landing site partly because it harbored a river delta in the ancient past.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Sagan City Plots are at zero?

In which topic should these be declared?

A City Rises on the Plain
Naming the first city on Mars
Some general observations.
Should we establish Mars bases, settlements or a colonies?
Sagan City - what will be there?

I had thought that the plots where in the My Hacienda but maybe we can link into the others for the declaration of them.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

SpaceNut, thanks for picking up on the little note in the daily calendar post.

My original idea was for the plots to all be defined in the My Hacienda topic.  We started that topic with a burst of creativity and enthusiasm, but it has been languishing since then.  I accept that I could have done more to encourage development of the idea of a virtual community in the My Hacienda topic, but you have provided an opportunity to make amends, so I'll try to take advantage of it.

My idea is to take advantage of the unique design of the FluxBB forum structure.  It allows for a post to be edited, and there is (apparently) no limit on the number of times a post can be edited.  I've been editing Post 82 in Robert Dyck's Holidays topic ever since he requested the calendar updates move to a more appropriate topic, which is where they are now.  Post 82 is the anchor from which the daily calendar post is extracted.

The same concept can work for the My Hacienda topic.  Each participant would "stake out" a plot in a post of their choosing.  They would edit the post to show the assigned plot in the format: Plot####

To see which plot number is assigned, look at the Recorder post in My Hacienda.

To find that post quickly, you can enter into the FluxBB search window: S e a r c h t e r m:  and :r e c o r d e r
Remove the spaces from the example above.
Use author: tahanson43206
Select posts.
Submit.

The "County Recorder" post will appear.

If someone would like to participate just post an inquiry in the My Hacienda topic.

My objective is to assemble 2750 individuals or groups who are willing to focus on one or two specific capabilities that will be needed for a viable first tier culture on Mars.   As an example, one member tossed out the idea of growing bamboo to make paper.  The logical pairing there would be a specific part of the agricultural spectrum, and a specific manufacturing capability.  The plot owner (in this case) would assemble all the knowledge that would be needed for a multimillionaire to set up the plot as laid out in the post.   The cost to the plot owner would amount to the time invested, but the value to future developers would be (or could be) significant.

However, that is only one example of 2750.  My hope is that as individuals begin working on fleshing out their plot concepts, they will interact with each other in productive ways, which could include undertaking joint ventures on Earth, where the challenges of distance, atmosphere, radiation and lack of infrastructure are less than they are on Mars.
