The tax returns of Donald Trump have been the subject of controversy for the past several years, particularly over them having not been made public despite his political career. Before Trump announced his candidacy for president, he had offered in 2011, 2014 and 2015 to release his tax returns. During his presidential campaign, Trump first said he would release his returns after they were "worked on", then Trump claimed that, because the returns were being audited, he could not make them public, but would do so. No law actually prevents tax returns from being released due to an audit, as emphasized by the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. Further on during his campaign, he said that voters were not interested in his returns, "there's nothing to learn from them", and that his tax rate is "none of your business".

In his lawsuit, Trump sued to preemptively block the House Ways and Means Committee from requesting the returns, New York Attorney General Letitia James from enforcing the law, and to stop the New York Department of Taxation from furnishing the documents. Trump argued his lawsuit was necessary to prevent his state returns from being disclosed to Congress before a court could hear his opposition.
In his lawsuit, Trump's attorneys argued that the state law was simply an effort to get information about his personal finances to embarrass him politically. It asked the court to provide a declaratory judgment that the House Ways and Means Committee "lacks a legitimate legislative purpose for obtaining the President's state tax information."
The legislation states that any "legitimate task" of Congress is a valid reason to make the request, should efforts to obtain the returns at the federal level be stonewalled by the Treasury Department. Can you name off a Democrat that's had more investigations and lawsuits arrayed against them that turned up nothing? I can't. This isn't about the law or justice, it's revenge for making them look like the moronic criminals that they've always been. We have a sitting President who has actually done everything that Democrats are charging President Trump with.
