Re: Okay guys, we need new moderators... - Want a job? Post here or nominate.

Hey, when I became a mod the controls didn't even work, so maybe you guys can't even do anything. Hehehe.

And Cindy, I had to take advantage of the moment, it was the first time (in some 3 years) you said you'd be open to it, and I'm sorry, but yeah, there you go. It can always be taken away if you find it too annoying, okay? Don't feel pressured.

*Hi Josh:

For a few moments the words "Group: Administrators" was beneath my avatar box (like Cobra's)...but now it's back to regular.  I could see some moderator features on the board; of course they're gone now too.

I'll be okay, just a bit "whoa!" still.

Looks like the bug remains (happened to Cobra, too). Unless we have a quiet admin here and they're not being kind enough to let me know they're deadmining you guys (hehe, not likely). I am going to look for a fix.

All Hail our new Overlords! big_smile Go hunt 'em spammers 'n dirty trolls!

As for my nomination: I'd love to help out, but let's be objective: I'm non-native English, so sometimes I miss innuendo's completely, I'm not a card-holder (blush) and I'm fairly new here, unlike, say, Bill White...

Ahh, as far as I can tell, it's not actually a bug, just the fact that IkonBoard "Advances" members when they increase their post count. You guys were being "Advanced" back to "Member" status. smile

Pretty neat feature... although a bit evil and risky. Shouldn't be a problem now.

I'm looking for one more moderator. smile

Rxke, you are one of our most prolific posters, and I'm happy to have you part of New Mars, your english is just fine by me (you should see my spanish!). If I didn't nominate Bill, it would've been you.

Can I investigate a migration to Scoop? Obviously, that would need higher approval.

I still see Cindy listed as 'member,' is she now some kind of undercover admin or is that because of the IkonBoad 'feature?'

Little offtopic: 1000th member any day now... Yay!

Covert moderation?

(offtopic - only two to go now for the 1000th member).

BWhite, Scoop? Blogging software? Move NewMars to that? Could we convert the database? I don't think we can.

Rxke, she changed her mind due to personal circumstances. I may have pushed her a bit too much. We'll see what happens.

We still need more moderators, although I have taken more time for NewMars lately.

I'd have considered it in six months or so, now that I have a reliable internet connection - but don't have enough time at the moment.

SpaceNut seems to be the only person available right now, to ban spammers when they pop up, and (as I understand the situation) he works during the day, so has to deal with the problem after work.

The issue I've been pursuing in recent months has been the registration process itself.

Thousands of ID's are showing as registered, but (it appears) that is misleading.  A person is recorded as "registered" before they complete the first login.

I know for a fact (since it happened to me) that the registration software can fail to send the "first password" email, and in the absence of that, a person will remain in the false "registered" state forever.

It took five months for the hard working volunteers of the Mars Society to straighten out whatever the problem was.  I have no doubt that was because they are busy with 1001 other matters of greater importance, including jobs, family and the greater needs of the Society.

I recognize that some of the thousands of people who have registered in this forum are spammers or worse, but I am optimistic enough to think that at least 50% of them are people who could make a contribution to the forum, and to global society as a whole, if they are so inclined.

Should you take on the role of Admin or Moderator for the forum, I hope you may be given sufficient power over the data to be able to run a query to find out how many of the thousands of ID's which show as "registered" but no posts, have actually completed the registration process, by logging in for the first time.

If (as I suspect) you find people who never received the "first password" email, or missed it because it went into their spam filter, then there may be a way to generate an inquiry to see if they are still interested in participating in the forum.

Something else that could be done is to change the text of the registration page.  It already explains how to ask for help, but that request goes to someone who is extremely busy.  It would be better (in my opinion) for the request for assistance to go to one of the active Admins for the forum.

In any case, best wishes for approval of your offer, and for success in the role.

Thanks for your reply ...

Just fYI ... I went back to start looking at your posts from 2015 ....

You got off to an impressive start with your discussion of space suit design for Mars.  I was taken aback to discover that Louis has been creating cities on Mars from at least then!

At least this time, he threw a (mental) dart at Mars and picked a site for the city, which I am now memorializing as Sagan City 2018.

I just want to get rid of the fraudulent advertisements.  It's infuriating.  I'm going to ask around at work to see what methods are used to clamp down on that kind of activity.  Maybe it's just a game of whack-a-mole.

For IanM ...

The article at the link below seems (to me at least) to catch the flavor of what might be possible as you join the admin team at NewMars.

Before making the decision to join a company, don’t ask about the culture or perks. Do your best to find out if the company knows how to build great teams. Does it place a premium on training, developing and supporting team leaders? Does it place a premium on you being trusted and supported by the people you work with every day? These are the things that determine whether you’ll end up miserable and wanting to quit.

For IanM ...

How's your application coming along? Post #60 in the Hypersonic topic is a good example of the spam you could remove.  SpaceNut has gone to work and will not be able to clean up the mess until he gets home.  The perpetrator may have paid attention to the time delay before crud is removed, so by creating the post in the morning there is a 12 hour stretch where it is exposed to forum readers.

What is the status of Ian's application to serve as a moderator to remove spam during the day when you are working?

Has anyone convened a meeting to discuss the application?

If so, who was in attendance?

What decisions were made, if any.

Even deciding to do nothing is a decision.

Ian stepped up to take on responsibility.  He deserves an up or down decision.

Thanks for considering this inquiry.
