Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars:

SearchTerm:J0035001   Sol 1 of Mars year 35

For SpaceNut .... Here is my "Mars" New Years Resolution ...

With your indulgence, I would like to follow Mars around the entire orbit, returning to 360 degrees 667 Sols from now.

Along the way, I am hoping to see continuous updates to the collective NewMars vision for how people from Earth will reach, explore and eventually settle Mars.   In addition, those visions will (hopefully) be supplemented and supported by discoveries on Mars itself, in space around Earth, and on Earth itself, as researchers and entrepreneurs push the envelope of what is known about the Universe, and what is possible for humans to accomplish.

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35        Martian Month in 12 month format: 1
Solar Longitude: 000.6        Sol Number: 2 Increase is 0.5

Previous SL: 000.1        Previous Sol: 1

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Sol 2 is in Month 1 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 1 extends from Sol 1 through 28
Sol 2 is Monday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.

We definitely would want to make sure that we talk about what makes each day special and not just an number counting exercise. The days will blur together as they cycle without the distractions of a holiday meaning for as many as possible.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

for SpaceNut ...

This is an interesting idea!  The entire membership of the forum can assist, if so inclined.

I'll post the day update, and others can contribute posts to this topic showing events on Mars (or on Earth relating to Mars) that occurred on that day.

An example would be launches of vehicles headed towards Mars, arrivals or perhaps other events which might be regarded as significant.

In addition, it would seem appropriate to post dates of future events, just as we (on Earth today) write notes on our physical wall calendars to remind us of appointments.

An example of a date worth noting (for example) might be the date when the Insight Lander hit a rock during deployment of the heat sensing probe.

Other significant steps would be the first that men make on mars.
The first greenhouse crops.

There will be lots of these and some should be Mars holidays...

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

2019/03/30 For SpaceNut ...

I was curious to see if the search engines are collecting data about the NewMars forum, and more importantly, raising the display level above the 1000th place where it might go if the web site is discounted.

To my surprise, a search delivered the TodayOnMars post (#19 in Holidays) at the TOP of the list of 9 results.

Here is an (edited) paste of the results.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Well I typed into bing only newmars and holiday with the results on page 1 showing the topic twice.
This has to do with the meta data feilds in the html code.
Back almost a decade ago when I was creating and hacking the pages to help websites get noticed that was part of the game to put the keywords into that field area so as to have the search engines find the websites.

For SpaceNut #120

Impressive find!

The calendar you've shown us is particularly interesting (to me at least) because of the (unexpected to me) invocation of Venus' orbit.

The religious connections are interesting as well.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

The Bing home page today indicates that its Happy Robotics Week for earth so that would make it Rover week on mars...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_(robot)

th?id=OHR.Pepper_EN-US7943129554_800x480.jpg

Every April, people across the country come together to educate and inspire students about the importance of robotics, which can now be found just about everywhere, contributing to almost every industry. Many people now have robots in their homes to help with simple housekeeping tasks, but robots are also capable of incredibly complex and delicate work. For example, robotic surgery allows doctors to make more precise movements than possible by a human hand. Reconnaissance robots are used by police to gather intel in situations that are too dangerous for humans. And robots are experts at rote tasks that we humans find boring, like repetitive assembly work.

The robot we’re featuring today, Pepper, is designed to work directly with customers, kind of like a receptionist. She's considered a humanoid robot because her body shape resembles that of a human body. She communicates through words, eyes, and body language.

Mars event from a few weeks ago in NASA's Curiosity images two solar eclipses on Mars caused by Phobos and Deimos — two Moons of the Red Planet.

Phobos, which is about 11.5 km across, was imaged on March 26, while Deimos, which is about 2.3 km across, on March 17,
Solar eclipses have been seen many times by Curiosity and other rovers in the past. Until now, there have been eight observations of Deimos eclipsing the Sun from either Spirit, Opportunity or Curiosity; there have been about 40 observations of Phobos.

There's still a margin of uncertainty in the orbits of both Martian moons, but that shrinks with every eclipse that's viewed from the Red Planet's surface, the team said.

"More observations over time help pin down the details of each orbit," Lemmon said. "Those orbits change all the time in response to the gravitational pull of Mars, Jupiter or even each Martian moon pulling on the other."

Martian moon Phobos as it crossed in front of the Sun, as seen by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 (the 2,359th sol, or Martian day, of the mission). The images were captured by Curiosity's telephoto-lens camera, called its Mast Camera (Mastcam) using its right-eye solar filter. The images have been sped up by a factor of 10; the entire eclipse lasted about 35 seconds.
