With every group that tries to find its way into space, they find that it costs alot...
MarsDrive originally started out as a group of people who wanted to see a manned mission to the red planet. We realized that the only way to get there was to create an organization that could reach out to as many people as possible.
Our goal at MarsDrive is to see the over all advancement and betterment of mankind though the access created by space travel.
You can be a part of something truly inspiring instead of being a mere spectator while your tax dollars are spent on things you have no say in.
Join us on the drive to Mars ... and the drive to make Earth a better place.
MarsDrive has launched a new project titled "Pennies for Mars". Details can be found on the information web page "Pennies for Mars". Did you know that in the U.S alone over a million pennies are lost each day? And that doesn't include all the pennies just laying around waiting to be found. It's time we used this wasted resource for the future. This is something anyone can do. We want you to keep a bank. Put your pennies in it. (Nickels and dimes are also good, of course.) When you empty it and convert it to paper money, donate that anount to MarsDrive via Paypal (see the "Donate" button). We won't get that much -- it won't be billions. But then, we're not doing rocket science. We're just lending a helping hand while others do the rocket science.
How will we spend the money is a fair question to ask? We're all about education, research funding, outreach and much more. We believe that through the process to communicate to more people about space, that more people would care what happens. So if you have any loose change floating around would you consider donating it to MarsDrive.

If those that post here have not noticed MarsDrive is working on a human mission to mars project and there are times when money is needed to fund the activity, the creation of demonstrators and experiments that could ride on existing missions traveling that way.
There are many issues that could stop a mission with current or near term launchers and such from ever hapening in our life time but with a lot of effort and planning it is felt that a plan can be put together to be able to go.

Wow Its hard to believe that I found this in a random search of topics...of course the link for pennies is gone and Marsdrive is not what it was after its crash as well.
But the advocacy and inspiration are still real.
In searching for information here are some topic information I find interesting.
Lincoln Cent on Mars Rover. The penny is a nod to geologists' tradition of placing a coin or other object of known scale as a size reference in close-up photographs of rocks, and it gives the public a familiar object for perceiving size easily when it will be viewed by MAHLI on Mars.
rover finds coins on Mars – Strange Unexplained
It’s a real coin ! A high-power camera on the Mars Curiosity rover snapped a picture of a 1909 American penny featuring Abraham Lincoln. The coin is used as a calibration target for the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) that is at the end of Curiosity’s robotic arm.

This Is the Most Expensive Penny in the Universe
It's now on Mars, after an exciting $2.5 billion ride. Previously, the most expensive Lincoln penny in history was a 1943 copper-alloy cent that was sold for $1.7 million in a 1996 auction.
The Mars pennies are quite expensive after all....

Of course its a decade later so we will need to save Dimes instead to be able to afford a trip to Mars...
