Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

I see more name labeling democrats are dumb and Republicans are retards.... not this serves no purpose to label when the issue is the dropping value of the buying power that a dollar has. The purpose to tax those that have and a need to keep making profit margins that come from the poor.

https://files.stlouisfed.org/files/htdo … 9707jw.pdf
The Rich and the Poor: Demographics of the U.S. Wealth Distribution review 1997

Income inequality is a growing issue in the United States, garnering increasing political attention as the middle class continues to shrink and the gap between the rich and the poor grows.
https://247wallst.com/special-report/20 … nd-poor/3/

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/census-dat … ow-income/

Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans — nearly 1 in 2 — have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.

"Safety net programs such as food stamps and tax credits kept poverty from rising even higher in 2010, but for many low-income families with work-related and medical expenses, they are considered too `rich' to qualify,"

Since the housing bubble burst, nearly 4 million American homes have been lost to foreclosure. An estimated 1.6 million children will be homeless at some time during the year - 38 percent more than at the start of the recession.

Together with the 49.1 million who fall below the poverty line and are counted as poor, they number 146.4 million, or 48 percent of the U.S. population. That's up by 4 million from 2009, the earliest numbers for the newly developed poverty measure.

Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

How can this be is the economy is doing so great....More Americans struggling to buy food, especially those with kids were hardest hit.

"Too many people in every region, state and community have been left behind in the economic recovery from the Great Recession and are still struggling to put food on the table."

Inflation and value of the dollar falling is less buying power....

The american dream of home ownership is difficult when all you can afford is a rental and even that is a struggle. Yes there is zoning in some areas of the nations many cities and towns but not every where and not to the same standards as to what counts as a habitat or of its construction details or materials to be made use of. It appears that even running water and in door toilet is not demanded of in temporary or camp shelters that are seasonal....

This goes to show if you can afford a piece of land and minimal funds to pay your property tax that you too can be a home owner.

Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

That doesn't look cheap, but if we stick to concrete and composite construction materials, the cost to live in affordable homes could go down in a dramatic way.  There's nothing inexpensive about the way prototypical homes are constructed.  Since we discussed the tariff situation, I've been thinking about ways that a house could be affordably constructed from durable and inexpensive domestically produced aircraft construction materials that don't use much in the way of wood, steel, nails, shingles, or prototypical insulation materials.  The composite building materials seem to be much cheaper and more durable than traditional materials.

How big is a garden variety 4 person home where you live, for example?

Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

I think we will be seeing more of this as Senior citizens are replacing teenagers as fast-food workers

There are many reasons for the elederly to take jobs as they were not able to put enough or anything at all into a 401 k, roth or other investment for the future to make use of, that social security is not all that much and that inflation has eroded the dollar so that it does not go as far as it did several decades ago when they did put money away.

Don't you mean 'willing', not  'able'?

Just put up a load of cheap small apartments for the indigent elderly. It shouldn't cost that much to keep them retired. Sure, they won't get to enjoy it as much as they thought they would, but they should have thought about that a few decades ago.

There are some trailer parks that are elderly only, some apparment housing that is also made as efficiencies for them as well but you still need enough to be able to get into them as they are limited in quantity.
The latest efficieny buildings are these tiny homes but zoning laws are trying to keep them out.

For SpaceNut reference #165:

I've been keeping some aging systems running ... The most frequent failure has been hard drives, and system boards seem to last about seven years, although a Pentium III system has been running much longer despite duty 12 hours or more per day.  I don't want to be accused of selling something, as sometimes happens when I offer a suggestion, so I'll simply report I've had excellent luck with converting IDE drives to SSD using IDE to SATA adapters.

Sure that is the direction that some are going but these are also the devices in the newer stuff that seem to be not lasting. All of which planned obsolescence is now part of most companies idea to keep selling products. I have been putting off buying a newer computer after several laptops which were Christmas presents to sons have gone belly up with the windows 10 upgrade and that includes even after a second hard drive was installed.

Cities with the most people on food stamps

I wonder just how many over lap the cities where jobs growth is occurring....

Many of the images are just like the cities and towns here in NH. The main streets are dead since parking is limited. Speed of vehicles create hazard for driver and pedestrians. The combined store fronts and apartments over them due to the parking create slum lord conditions.

Trump says illegals are causing this problem of being poor but I think its a bit more complex than that...

Jobs that might not exist in 50 years

Not surprising but many of these jobs are already gone in parts of the US...

Then again on this side of the border there has been anothr impact to America...

More than 25,000 workers strike at Mexican border factories

dozens of factories south of Brownsville, Texas, have gone on strike after owners of the plants that assemble for export refused union demands for a 20 percent pay hike and an annual bonus.

The government of Tamaulipas state says four of the 45 companies represented by the union reached terms to avoid strikes, while at least one announced plans to leave the city of Matamoros. Others halted expansion projects. The strikes took effect Friday afternoon. The factories make auto parts, medical equipment, plastics and other goods.

The labor strife comes on the heels of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's promise to double the minimum wage just south of the U.S. border to 176.2 pesos a day, the equivalent of $9.28 at current exchange rates.

Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

Housing costs are a problem for the poor or under employeed in many areas of the US. Tiny homes are popping up across the US. Here's how they could help the affordable housing crisis.

Eddie Latimer, CEO of nonprofit Affordable Housing Resources, is developing a "micro-village" of 13 small modular houses just north of downtown. They will rent for about $1,000 a month, far less than the median studio apartment price of $1,545 a month in downtown Nashville.

"Our goal is to help Nashville discover tools to start replacing the affordable housing we're losing," Latimer said.

This is the latest version of a trailer park....

Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

Government shutdown exposed Americans' deep savings crisis

During the month-long partial government shutdown, the press reported extensively on the financial hardships being felt by many furloughed government workers. While the media may have pointed these out to impact President Donald Trump’s approval rating, the reporting highlighted a much larger issue facing our nation.

Government has a spending addiction, and the people who foot the bill have a savings crisis.

The numbers are truly shocking. The bottom 20 percent of Americans by income have no savings, according to a Bankrate report last year. The next lowest 20 percent have an average of just $26,450 in the bank.

In 2017, the Federal Reserve Board reported that 44 percent of American households surveyed could not cover a $400 emergency expenses.

Some say 3 to 6 months should be in a savings account or some other method that can hold your money. These days a savings account will not being used due to the poor interest rates that you could earn.

Re: Why do we have Poverty in America

The shutdown did impact more than just the home less as it made a few feel like they were on that same path out the door...
How the shutdown opened a window on poverty in America
Analysis: Furloughed workers are now getting paid, but economic insecurity remains top of mind for millions of Americans living on the financial edge.

Most of the jobs that employ the largest number of Americans pay less than $40,000 a year. Half of all retail clerks, who have America’s most common job, earn $23,370 a year or less. Poverty — defined by the government as a family of four earning less than $24,600 in 2017 — is not evenly distributed. Americans who make slightly more, but still less than $33,425 ($16.07 per hour), which Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers identified as 2017’s living wage, the amount needed to survive without public assistance.
