Hey all, with a colony on mars, due to low atmosphere, the sun's UV and radiation rays would fry us. How would we be able to make an artificial atmosphere to protect the colony from meteors, suns rays, UV rays, etc...? We would need this and it would be very crucial to support the life on mars. Thanks again all. -Trevor

Skim through the threads in the terraforming section for a lot of info. An artificial atmosphere could be made in a number of ways even though it would likely take a very long time ranging from hundreds to thousands of years. Even without an atmosphere it would be possible to inhabit Mars by building underground colonies or constructing large complexes of surface buildings adept at blocking radiation.
To achieve the impossible you must attempt the absurd

Regarding radiation hazards before a thick atmosphere on Mars could be arranged, maybe this quote from Robert Zubrin's article The Economic Viability of Mars Colonization could help:
Mars, on the other hand, has an atmosphere of sufficient density to protect crops grown on the surface against solar flares. On Mars, even during the base building phase, large inflatable greenhouses made of transparent plastic protected by thin hard-plastic ultra-violet and abrasion resistant geodesic domes could be readily deployed, rapidly creating large domains for crop growth.

Remaining habitats, not inside big plastic domes, would be located underground in a subterrenean setting.
